First of all, I want to address all the things that people say about the game not working. The game works perfectly but you have to make some tweaks which are EASY: 1. Game will crash upon launch on almost all occasions because it tries to launch the Direct3D version of it which has issues. You can bypass that by changing D3DPopTB.exe in the shortcut target to popTB.exe. 2. Software renderer works, as is the Direct3D IF you do those small tweaks (check below) 3. While played in software renderer saves the resolution, when played via Direct3D does not and you have to manually set it every time. There is a fix for that too. 4. Game can go above 800x600 if you go to its shortcut properties and right after the last " of its target you type -allres (So it looks like this: "E:GoGPopulous - The BeginningD3DPopTB.exe" -allres) The fixes: 1. Go to the Compatibility settings of your shortcut, click "Change settings for all users" and uncheck everything 2. While in the Compatibility settings tab, check Compatibility mode and choose Windows XP SP2 and "Run this program as an as admin" - Those steps ensure that software renderer runs OK. (that is the PopTB.exe). If you want to use the Direct3D version (D3DPopTB.exe) you have to do some additional tweaks. 3. Download dgVoodoo v2.53 or newer from http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2/dgVoodoo2.html (it is a safe site and needed for lots of older games) - Unzip the file and copy everything from its MS folder into the game's main folder. Also copy dgVoodooSetup.exe there and run it - Click on the . button at the top right. Then on the General tab select your adapter from the list of "adapters to use". In the DirectX tab, select GeForce4 Ti 4800 and click Apply. Run the D3DPopTB.exe and check if it works. - To set a fixed resolution without needing to re-apply it in every launch, download and run Resolution Changer from https://www.popre.net/downloads.php. Best res so far for me is 1280x720 on a 24" monitor
What everyone else so far said is true! I first played it on a Lucas collection released at 1997 and absolutely loved it back then! The game is a really good remaster, everything is as you remember it! I rarely pre-order games but I did it with this one and was not disappointed!. Thank you for making such a great effort! The only thing that I completely and utterly dislike is the times that additional commentary is playing on top of cut scenes that promote the plot. It is really annoying and makes you lose track. It may not be a big issue for people that played the original and know what to expect from the plot, but someone who plays it for the first time cannot enjoy the additional commentary and not lose track of the game. Please make it so that the commentary plays after the scenes with the press of A
Many people believe that this is set on an imaginary non-existent universe just sticking the DnD logo on top of it to appeal to DnD fans. This in fact is wrong as the game is based on the Eberron world of DnD, an extremely detailed world debuting back at 2004 (if I'm not mistaken) for 3.5E. One of the main new features was that the world had more of a magical and steampunk feel than let's say Forgotten Realms, thus the Warforged race and the new class, the Artificer (which ironically is one of the most interesting classes ever released and a potential powerhouse if the game goes that way). The changes in clerics and their ability to cast spells by means of pure faith was also a thing that I liked about the setting. Having played both as a player and a DM in this setting (mainly the latter) I had to spend hours reading the core material and I have to say that the game captures the beauty of the world quite nice, from an artistic point of view. I wanted to like the game so bad since I prefer Eberron to FR a thousand times more so I picked it up upon initial release and got down to it. But the final feel it leaves is a somewhat unfinished product with little to offer and although it has some interesting stuff to build upon in the end it falls short. I must give the game 2 stars but since Eberron is my favorite setting I cannot drop that low (still it is a 2 star if you want to be realistic). If the game's price drops at about 2-3 euros/dollars, give it a chance, else it is too expensive compared to other games that do things better than this
This arguably is a good game but it is not for everyone. This is NOT the Fallout 3 that "should" have been - like some people claim - although I really hoped for it to be. It resembles Fallout because it is post-apocalyptic and has some equipment/armor kinda reminding the game (also a Pip-Boy reference which I found hilarious!) but it is a lot closer to Metro in its feel. Anyway, that is not a bad thing, just wanted to make things straight. Exploration is nice with large areas to cover and many things to see. The combat can be a bit swallow though and some character builds might not work as expected. There are lots of people that had to restart the game because their initial build was not sufficient. There is no cover mechanic for those that care (I personally don't care that much) and also the plot/writing are a bit weak at points. The game manages to surpass those "faults" though and immerse you quite nicely, having you coming back for more IF you can look past its biggest flaw which can also become its bane. And that is: the lack of a map! Be it a local map of the area you are currently exploring or a larger world map, there is NONE! You can - and will - get lost at times which can be very frustrating and not knowing what area sizes you are going against can be really intimidating. I managed to get past this issue, but I know people that quit playing it because of this. So if you are up for a game with great potential and interesting stuff to do, reminding you all those older era crpgs that we all loved this can be a game for you - if you skip the things mentioned above.
As many have stated before me, the game is an improved Fallout 1 and really well done so. It's bigger, feels deeper and the immersion is even greater! Items are expanded as are locations and NPCs. The plot is also engaging! The AI is improved but you'll encounter the occasional "funny" moments (like enemies staying near your companions and your companions just staring at them instead of attacking, or companions using a spray attack on each other etc) but those won't ruin your experience even the slightest. Also now you can customize your companions better, since you can give them weapons and armors to wear, plus they can improve their abilities the longer they are with you. Get it!!! NOTE: Some people have Fallout 1, 2 or Tactics in their library but still seeing those as "purchaseable" in their respective pages. The reason is most probably because they have the "classic" versions in their libraries and not those "new" ones. been asking for that for quite some time now. one of the best god sims and a truly underrated game, not many people know of. you try to build an efficient heaven and hell as the demiourge. next to you, your 2 fellow helpers jasper and aria, guiding you throughout the procedure. there are some minor weird stuff here and there gameplay wise that many will like, others might not. but in overall the game is addicting and has tons of micro managing to offer. and by tons i literally mean tons...give it a try even if you are not into god sims. humorous and creative, a game almost all will enjoy!
