Beauty and the Beast (for me)

What I wanted was a lovely, cozy, relaxing open game and this delivered initially. Visually it is stunning and I loved the diving through oceans to soothing music, although you don't see through the eyes of the diver. There are no instructions so I had to Google a lot (what are the triangles, what are the shells, how do I pick up objects etc). I was just chilling and thinking how I am going to love to replay the game over and over after stressful days when it took a turn. The game becomes more of a challenge game where you are trapped in an underground city and need to unlock the way out or there are big red mines that explode in front of you. The game gets darker and eventually you get electrocuted and fish die plus the ocean gets contaminated. The game induced a good deal of anxiety for me. I did keep going for a while and reached the 'other side' but then the joy of it had gone for me so I gave up before the end (4+ hours played). I feel misled by the reviews describing it as lovely and beautiful - because it is this, but only for a short time before the apocalyptic demise sets in. Recommend the first part of the game only (sorry).

SimCity™ 3000 Unlimited

Not what I expected sorry

I absolutely loved playing Sim City Build It app where you could choose each house style, rotate, place it anywhere in the city (so long as it wasagainst a road). I loved the special buildings during holidays. I thought Sim City 3000 would be similar and although I only just got the the game my first impressesion isn't great and I'm having lots of issues. The main issue is navigation as the keys don't work but the mouse pad just zooms across the land at superfast speed. I've got water piples everywhere and it costs to build and delete so I ran out of money in 40 minutes of play. The homes build themselves in 'zones' and you just wait while the time ticks by - it's not clear what I should do because I have no money left. I've rated it 3 stars as I am sure some of the issues are newbie mistakes but overall I just wanted to say if like me, you thought it functioned like Sim City Build It - that's not the case - at least not in the first hour of play time.

Megaquarium

Good First Impressions

As a new gamer (using a laptop) I am enjoying building the aquarium. I really like there is no rush with the game and you can pause while you work out where to move your tanks etc. Also love the fact it's not all about resource management and staff (once assigned) just get on with everything. I am slightly disappointed with the visuals especially the ugly heaters and filters than need to be alongside each tank - far better if these could be placed within tanks and more visually pleasing. It would also be nice to have 'cards' with images of the real fish (I'm thinking like Wingspan which is visually stunning). With the mousepad it is easy to select but not so easy to deselect objects. Overall a great stress free game with plenty of creativity and there's more for me to discover as a progress through the difficulty levels - plus there's expansion packs available. Definitely one for those who want enjoyable easy going games.

Wingspan

Lovely game - informative and relaxing

I've had my eye on this board game for ages but it was so expensive. I'm loving this PC version - it is beautiful to look at with great animation of the birds and educational at the same time. I like that it's time limited (by number of rounds) and the scoring is automatic but they explain how points are calculated. I am still learning how to play and the tutorial was so long I forgot most of it by the time I started. It seemed to show you can do more than one action per round but in the game play I can only seem to do one thing. Overall I am really happy with the game, it plays well on my laptop without using lots of resources and thank you to Gog for a version that does not need to play through a launcher app as those are too much effort for my laptop.

Builders of Egypt: Prologue

Unable to get it to work

I'm new to gaming and use a laptop so trying a few demo versions to see what I like. Unfortunately I couldn't get this game to work. When I selected an item (house) and placed it on the ground I couldn't work out how to de-select it with mouse or keyboard. Also the text and icons were too small to read and the automatic scrolling text was the wrong pace for me to read it. As a beginner I appreciate games that start with a tutorial or guide you for the first 5 or 10 turns so people like me can see how to build homes, roads and then have a 'help' button at the side. Maybe in time it will grow to a good game - there is potential as lots of levels and complexity.
