Love this game

I had it on Steam, as it arrived there before I could get it on GOG. It's a relaxing way to spend time, and the way it's constructed is psychologically gratifying. You're not competing to destroy your opponent, or dominate them; you're trying to do what's best for your birds, and grow them as well as you can in a connected ecosystem. There are random snippets about the birds you play for informational purposes, and the tweets and warbles are cheery and bright. Can be played solo against the game's AI (which varies from "slightly competitive, to be enjoyed with a mug of hot chocolate" to "Quite canny, to be enjoyed with mugs of coffee and a good degree of concentration and thinking". And as mentioned, can be played against other people, with a lot of time between turns to sit and think with no pressure. Don't know many people to play against? No problem. There's a Discord channel full of people who want a nice relaxed game.

Fantastic game + Respect for developers

I own the board game with expansions, I bought the digital edition because its a really good digital version of the board game. And I want to say Thank you developers(Respect) that you not only make themes for Christmas, but also make themes for Ramadan. Thank you, never seen any other developers do what you did.

Great game but the ads and start

I really enjoy the gameplay of Wingspan and the digital version is a good translation of tabletop experience. The AI is fairly easy to defeat but I generally want a more chill experience from the game anyway. A few months ago I would have given the digital version 5 starts but... I stupidly installed an update and now the startup process is slower and every time I start the game there's an advertisement for one of the DLCs. I don't and never will play Wingspan online and the PC I play it on isn't even connected to the network. The startup process being slower while it attempts to connect back to base and the ads seriously undermine my enjoyment of the game to the point that I will just play another game about 50% of the time. It has ensured that I won't buy any DLCs.

A good European style board game.

The defining feature of a European style board game is that there are multiple ways to earn points. Wingspan is a solid example of this type of game. You earn points from the bird cards you play, by completing end-of-round goals and your unique bonus goal at the end of the game, laying eggs, and by activating certain bird card abilities that let you slot cards or cache food. It's a relaxing game, but I wouldn't exactly call it casual. The rules are moderately complex and you need to keep track of several different elements, although fortunately these are always right in front of you. The tutorial helps, but honestly I got more out of looking up the rules to the board game online. The good news is that even though it allows for some complex strategies to maximize your points, there are no frustrating moments in the game, due to the fact that there's limited opportunity for the players to interact with each other. There are no moments where you spend 5 turns setting up the perfect combination only to have your opponent block you at the last minute and you've wasted half the game. For this reason, playing against the AI feels almost like playing by yourself. The first time I played, I basically ignored what the other players were doing, and even though I ended up in last place, it didn't feel like a loss. I felt I had adopted a successful strategy and completed all the goals, and the other players' scores were just meaningless numbers of the screen. This might not appeal to everyone, but I found it refreshing and relaxing. My only complaints are: 1. It's sometimes too easy to get lost in what's going on during card activation sequences, especially when it happens during opponents' turns. 2. A game like this needs a manual, and it doesn't come with one. But these are minor, and I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys board games, especially European style board games.
