Archeo: Shinar

Different than expected

It reminds me of soccer manager 2000 mixed with evil bank manager. You don't have direct control over you explorers, like in The Curious Expedition. It's focused on the things behind that, like keeping good relations with the press, keeping your employees happy and well trained. Also, the game seems to be very complex in the first hours, but it doesn't require you to know everything. What's controversial is that the devs locked more advanced tutorials behind the story progress. I understand that they want to teach the player everything step by step and if you want to , really want to learn more there's some sort of in-game wiki. But why 5/5? First of all, the art style is just breathtaking. It's nothing crazy, but it really blends together. The second thing is the side events, which takes place between expeditions. One side event can refer to other side events which happened even a dozen rounds ago. They can refer to your explorers, your opponents and even more. It really feels like the side events create a solid side story going on in the back. And the third thing is the story, It's presented via animated clips, story expeditions and letters from other characters. And all of that with native voice actors. It really surprised me to hear native French voice in an indie game. Worth giving it a shot if you like management sims or the archaeology because there are many references to some controversial theories (like water eroded Sphinx enclosure or planet Nibiru).

Age of Wonders

Classic

Look at the release date. 20 years ago. And this game is still better than half of new strategy games coming out this year. It deserves more than 5/5, it is what you would expect turn-based strategy should be. Keep in mind that there's no 4k and you may have some tech problems with super-wide monitor.

Tyranny - Standard Edition

Great game but not what they premiss

Tyranny is a great game from obsidian in a very unique setting, however, it's not what was premissed. What do you get? You get good rpg from your beloved obsidian in a great setting with good mechanics and messed up world, which can't be just fixed at this point. The game as a game is wonderful, but it's not exactly the same thing they were telling us. It is just an rpg in a different setting, there's nothing new to the genre. However, the game is solid, polished and delivered as a great experience. If you like Obsidian's games then you should like that one too.
