Lust Theory - Season 1

conceptually solid, thematically vapid

When i first saw that this game took a relatively simple concept, time loop, i was interested (as i usually am) to see what thematic relevance this framing device would serve within the overarching story. Time loops in fiction are generally used to place a character in a situation where they have to create their own meaning. They can obtain absolute power, total control over everything, but in the end none of it will matter as the day resets and they're the only one to remember. This game presents this situation with a relatively juvinile goal: have sex with every woman the main character knows, and the framing is nothing more than a typical motivation to get to sex scenes. On a deeper thematic level the loops offer many opportunities to explore the purpose of lust and romance in a world where it ultimately does not matter due to the inevitable reset. I hoped that this game would seek to provide such commentary on these ideas, but overarchingly it falls short. There was no moment where i felt that the writing was actually making an effort to explore the effect total control within total meaningless was having on the main character. Instead, it seemed all too eager to brush past this as an excuse to get to the next sex scene. This is also an area where the chosen gameplay of a visual novel falls short, as there isn't much representation of the time loop outside the end-of-day mechanic, and ability to rewind conversations. The only moment i felt there was any effort to explore this world beyond the most horny, surface-level, observations was when the main character passed out, and offhandedly commented that it must be from the stress of the time loop. This was then quickly forgotten by the game the next reset and never brought up again by the player character. As for this character, there was a brilliant opportunity to show growth beyond the simple single mindedness he shows in the beginning, but it was not taken. Maybe season 2 does better, but i'm not that confident
