Deadly Days

Fun but Short and shallow

This is very lite on the rogue-lite or is that supposed to be heavy on the rogue-lite I can never remember which it is. The unlock tree barely gives you anything and only unlocks things you still only "randomly" find in the game. Just like most rogue-likes... difficulty is not well thought out and is just shallow and there to get the badge in the cheapest way possible. Also just like most rogue-likes... RNG is a major component so as per usual... the human minds addiction to gambling is triggered. For me, I can only enjoy these games as long as something new shows up and once you have played with all the toys possible, the game is dead and worthless because the main loop is already old and tired with nothing new to do. This is the problem with all shallow games. Only fun for a short time until the novelty wears off and this game is very much having this effect on me.

Thea 2: The Shattering

Improvement over Thea: The Awakening

Reviews are mixed but I actually like this one better than the first so far. The developer could use some education in good UI/UX design as few things are very intuitive, expecially the combat system, but after you get used to things you are likely to settle in just fine. Intial curve is a little high but game does not seem nearly as difficult as some others are saying. Lots of minor bugs, none of them game breaking so far and I have only 1 one CTD so far which is not bad all things considered. Thea 2 seems to have a little to a lot more of everything compared to Thea 1. Hopefully the dev will continue to improve upon this game with future updates or sequels.

ZZZZZZ.... wut?

While I wished there were more beat'em ups like this to play, this one was a straight up snooze fest. Controller support sucks. Player #1 is hardcoded to Keyboard. Had to play as Player 2 & 3 using controllers. Cannot see what character you are selecting for slot 3, have to start game as Player 2 THEN have player 3 select their character to see what they are doing. Moves are boring, fighting is boring, I cannot find anything entertaining about this game. Game feels like the devs just did not care about thier product on any level other than to make it long and boring.

Space Haven

EA - XCom Apoc & Base Building!

A rare treat of a game! I hope the title explains the idea of the game, yes it is real-time but can be paused and sped up. AI seems to be fairly decent for your units plus you have the ability to use a schedule manager to help control them. You can define who can do certain things according to their skills and you can take manual control of your units and directly assign a task to one of them. It is interesting to see them salvage a ship. Some salvage functions are pretty decent and does not force to you lose components just because which is nice, meaning you are not unfairly punished for making a mistake. Now for some bad and why its loses a star. Game does rely on some wonky science as part of its functionality but it is Science Fiction after all. However it could stand to treat the science we do know a little better than what it does which might be a little immersion breaking if you have trouble turning that side of your brain off like me. Things like Power management is a total gimick. You place nodes that have a range limit and then area of power. The idea of running a power conduit through the wall is absent here. Doors double as air flow control instead of air conduits which would become a mandatory system on a station the size of the kind you are building and would add good content to the game to have for management. Solar Panels go inside the ship and take up a lot of space? Wut? Water management is particularly atrocious in the game. It is recycled from taking a dump instead of from urination... no humidity mechanims for water reclamation and hydrogen from using water to generate oxygen could be used for plants/energy but totally dismissed in the game... maybe it will be handled in the furture. That said It really is fun in my opinion and worth buying at full price for now. I have already achieved my $1 per hour of entertainment break point for this game to totally justify its purchase! Hopefully you will as well!

Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark

Fun game with flaws, very FFT feels

Its a fun game, and does play very similar to Final Fantasy Tactics but it is definitely not a one to one clone. View is locked, there is no 3d map rotation or as much depth as FFT in combat options and moves. Throwing a rock is now an item thing? LOL WUT? Try picking up the ones laying around on the ground instead of bringing your own? But it does scratch a good itch for a tactical game either way. If you see it on sale definitley pick it up and enjoy. Minus 1 star because this game uses bad/lazy RNG. Level 1 Theif can steal just as well as a Level 10 theif against a level 5 enemy. Thankfully leveling modifiers are clearly displayed and are not RNG, a big win in my book! The story is nothing to write home about but the Main Loop is nice to see and this game is a little under rated. Would like ot see more of these!

Homeworld: Emergence

Play Original Copy if you can

Sorry, but this version is inferior to the original and is rife with bugs. Ships will not engage enemies in front of their faces, you have to pause and manually direct them to attack. Guards are terrible and are not preemtive, ships will disengage the target you assigned and will instead engage targets that are far less deadly especially drone ships. Sentinels are not even worth the RU you spend on them, they will face shields the wrong way and no longer surround ships with forcefields, they only so a shield wall making them completely pointless. This great game was made into a much lesser version of itself and that is truly a shame. I regret buying it for convenience... just go and play Cataclysm instead. Why even waste time and effort to remake a game into a lesser version of itself? Oh right.. keep forgetting cash grab!

Deep Sky Derelicts

Another RNG plagued game

Okay, I think I might be getting jaded over these rogue like games where RNG is the main mechanic. This is not gaming... this is just gambling. The game is not terrible, but it is held back by an obvious lack of QA polish by the Dev. Just a little more effort would make the world more alive but I think the theme is boring and deadly so maybe the dev just wants a dead world as part of the atmosphere. Trying to press your luck and RNG can ruin you in a single go... standard fare for a rogue like I guess... I just don't like that options, equipment, skills, & cards are arbitrary all the time. You can clearly be equiped to outclass an encounter yet just be so unlucky that you fail every roll, get weak attack cards and wind up losing a party member because the game decided that the group of 5 enemies you are fighting gets to go two time at the start with all attacks being AOE and very damaging. Another game where skill is not how you win. You win by hedging your bets... grind up and stack your decks. This is not gaming, it's just gambling... and maybe that is why these games get more attention than they deserve. Get this on discount, you should less dissapointed.

Driftland: The Magic Revival

Majesty Clone... but with Islands

Game is not terrible but also not great, Human Campaign is almost all tutorial... what? Story is about as Meh as it gets including "brain washing/sould stealing" lol wut? Races hate/like each other because because. I got bored after 15 hours... recommend a buy on 50% or better discount if you liked Majesty. Cannot have multiple races like Majesty though except when you get them from a Story mechanic. Lose their building you cannot rebuild their units. Spells are all the same across all races... Research tree is mostly a joke and seems to only be present to add a sense of progression to game. Ravens, Eagles, & Dragons add some extra to the game but pairing them up with specific classes is tedious baby sitting. Spell casing limits are an interesting mechanic but also not well thought out either. You can just get an Island with a Tellurion or Tomb on it and literally drive it around to launch attacks from. But maybe that is what the devs wanted? Games seems... too easy. Just take your time and you can crush anything in your way... you are your greatest enemy if you rush yourself into no food or gold. Babysit heal your heroes and its hard for them to die. You can build massive armies and bum rush the enemy which is nice! Your offensive spells are... in a word..."pointless" or many words "a waste of magic"... use your heroes and heal/buff them instead. Again, not terrible not great! The concept has great potential... don't think this game will be seeing that potential in a DLC or Sequel, but maybe I will be wrong.

Rezrog

Fun but... Beware

Game is fun, but next to no QA went into this than bare minimum. First the Good. Gameplay is relaxing and casual, which sometimes I get into the mood for. It's not exactly easy but if you grind a little bit and keep stocked on Pots you should not go down. You can assign your stats to make characters work how you like. Everyone is the same except their skills. You can put a bow on a wizard and a staff on your warrior, it does not make much sense but you can do it. Now for some bad... Buy Item in store... reveal its bonus stats... guess what? They are all the same no matter how many you buy. Whoops... same goes for items you pickup in dungeons. Got a Axe, Dagger, & Shield... guess what? All the exact same bonus states +2 Str & 1 Luck. Movement... no intelligence applied it will walk you straight over hazards, the enemy too so if they die on it you don't get the experience. Mobs are almost always at the entrance of the room you just opened. RNG heavy... you can run an entire dungeon and get nothing for the Character you used or gems for the skills you need. Did I mention that you need an enourmous amount of cash to share gems? Seriously? You can go through 10 dungeons before you can upgrade a single freaking skill because you never get the gems you need for the skills you use. Can have chacter get nearly 100 gems for skills they cannot upgrade.. might as well just sell them instead because you cannot use themuntil you spend 10k to unlock the share chest for gems. This is just a stupid feature and pointlessly frustrating due to pure randomness!
