The Long Dark

Good approach, but unfinished!

Promising, but unfinished - it ends after episode 2 with a big cliffhanger. Once you get used to the "art"-graphics it is a good game. It is likely the best and hardest survival game I know but at this time (2018-04-05) it is still unfinished (voices missing and story ends apruptly) but I spotted no major bugs. As this state seemed to have prevailed and it is not labeld "in dev" I find this unacceptable. So this is the reason for the low rating, else it would have gotten a 4 star rating - maybe if there comes a patch with the rest of the content. For for this time: Be warned, this is NOT a FINISHED game.

Hard West

Good game

I definitly cannot agree to other reviews here - the game has a surprisingly fair and innovative combat system for this kind of game (and I am also X-Com fan). It might not be as complex as those other games but it is really good. The atmosphere is good though I would have wished for more spoken dialogues and less written text windows. The battles are tactical, solid and sounds and graphics are quite atmospheric supporting the dark mystical wild west stories of the campaigns. Sadly it lacks a bit the sandbox aspect, which you wish for and at some point I just wanted to go on playing the campaign when it ended... well overalla well made game with one bad technical problem: For me it had a memory leak leading to 6GB+ of RAM usage over the course of hours and to sudden lags increasing steadily up to 15 seconds at which point you will decide to restart the application and it works again fine. Still that is not a showstopper but definitly gets me almost down to 3 stars. But I decided to vote for 4 as it was fun to play and the really good combat system deserves it.

Planet Nomads

Not too promising

The main problem of this: The game lacks a clear concept. Not a tense story like Subnautica, no digging or "build a shelter" like Minecraft, no open universe like No Man's Sky. It is not clear for me where the trip is going from here. It feels like someone just started and tried putting up something that is somehow like those other games. There is one aspect that is clearly present right now that is the building of customized vehicles. What is in there right now: The terrain is quite uniteresting, exact digging is impossible and filling up accidentially holes is impossible too. The water is just a level, no glimpse of spreading, gameplay or physical impact here. Dig to sea level: Water - no matter where. Basebuilding is tedious but it works, the use of a base is quite limited. Survival? Well it is not easy at the beginning but because you just do not know what to do. Environmental parameters are not simulated very well currently and current health state is just to be seen by the numbers (poison, rain and radiation are lowering all the same property). Animals are all spawning around a fix spawnpoint, they do not leave it. Crafting is standard and building is good but there is no creativity required as blocks are predefined. Connecting electricity is always a pain in the ass (you need to connect everything manually) but the connection via pipes of different machines is innovative and quite a nice concept. I love survival games but this one seems to be rather unready (even for early access). Current version: 0.8.1

Maybe not what a GOG user expects

This software uses a tracking spyware called Redshell. This is most likely not what a GOG user wants to support. See (german) http://www.pcgameshardware.de/Spiele-Thema-239104/News/Drittanbietersoftware-namens-Redshell-sorgt-fuer-Diskussionen-1259059/
