X-Morph: Defense Complete Edition

More fun than expected

With a title like that, I didn't have much expectation going into X-Morph Defense. I'm about halfway through the campaign and having a good amount of fun. It's certainly a spectacle and always keeps you on your toes. The only downside would be the ability to collect debris to add to the building resources, which is instrumental in building an effective defense but feels a little like busy work when I'm trying to have fun shooting enemies or watch my towers do their work. Cheers to the devs, this is a fun, polished game.

Zombie Night Terror

Nailed it

A funny and perfectly lightweight Lemmings clone. Not too difficult or complex, with great extra objectives for those that want more of a challenge. A goofy narrative leads the player through differently themed chapters and will keep you coming back along with its smooth and vibrant animations. While simple, I give this 5/5 stars because I feel like it perfectly accomplishes what the developers set out to do. Well done, very charming and lots of fun! And loving the soundtrack, would be perfect for a Halloween party.

Full Spectrum Warrior

An extremely rough tactics gem

I just booted this up recently on my new PC and somehow it worked without a single flaw (installed on OS drive, Windows XP compatibility mode). A couple of years ago it wouldn't even boot, so maybe try it now!!! When I originally played this game on the first Xbox, it grabbed me by my love for strategy games with its unique take on real-time tactics. I remember it definitely not being a great game but I never forgot those mechanics. After probably about 15 years, the game is pretty much as I remember. I still love moving my squads through hostile territory, cover to cover, down alleys and streets, across plazas and markets. Setting firing sectors for each soldier ever so deliberately, laying down covering fire so I can move other squads safely. Unfortunately, the overall game design is sorely lacking. Level design leaves much to be desired, both enemy and friendly AI are a huge pain, controls and camera are very clunky, bugs, I could go on. Oddly, sometimes I found it to be too easy, which is when I discovered that the difficulty settings are horribly conceived. Play it on medium difficulty and you'll find yourself with only 1/3 the amount of supplies, twice as many enemies, ambushes, inaccurate friendlies, deadlier foes, unfair enemy placement... it drove me nuts. So I had to finish the game on the lowest diffulty which I found to be almost too forgiving with eerily sparse enemies. With all that said, I would actually love to see a modern iteration of this game. I'm not a huge fan of games that basically serve as US military propaganda, but honestly I think the developers were really onto something with these game mechanics. I've personally never played another game like this and I'll never forget it. I have to say it's worth playing if you like real-time tactics, and you may very well enjoy it if you keep in mind everything I've said here. TIP: each individual soldier can be given unique firing orders (read the manual, this is not covered in the tutorial)

Jotun: Valhalla Edition

An experience founded on aesthetic

I'm not a Jotun backer but it was on my radar for a while before release. The artwork was the main element that drew me to Jotun, and it definitely delivers on that front. Unfortunately, the artwork is really the best part of the experience. Jotun is good if you're in a certain mood, but there's not a whole lot going on in this game. You'll find yourself exploring a variety of fantasy landscapes, and sometimes fending off smaller enemies until you face the mighty Jotun of each area. The animations and background art have all clearly had a lot of heart poured into them, as well as the Norse mythology setting. The gameplay is passable at best, and boring for a large part of the game. Exploring the landscapes can be interesting at times but often tedious. Combat is simple, and you will be granted greater abilities if you explore more thoroughly. The ending it ultimately satisfying but the journey there may not be entirely worth it. I don't regret playing, but wouldn't play again.
