Hollow Knight: Silksong

Beautiful game but too hard

It's just too hard. I beat Hollow Knight (secret boss too) and lots of other hard games but Silksong is just too hard. You'll need lightning reflexes, excellent memory and the willingness to die again and again and again and again.. I got the normal ending in Silksong and was working on the secret extra ending but sorry.. just not having a good time.

The Invincible

The best sci-fi game since Prey 2017

So you like sci-fi? Ok, play this game. It really is that simple.

Old Skies

What happend Mr. Gilbert?

Did you get depressed? Would you like to rewind your life to sometime, someplace, when your were more at ease? Perhaps like a carousel which goes round and round? Sorry to hear that but it happens to the best of us. Games are art sure, but gaming is also part of the entertainment industry. And if you ask me Unavowed was much closer to why want to play, and make, games in the first place.

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader

Not only for Warhammer fans

Rouge Trader may be set in the 40k universe but you can definitely tell this isn't Owlcat's first game, all their experience with the Pathfinder RPGs have been put to good use. You don't even have to think of Rouge Trader as a "40k game" if you don't want to, it's just as much a "complex CRPG set in the 40k universe". The overall story definitely has some big moments with shock and awe (it's Warhammer), but there's also a surprising amount of nuance and intrigue. One moment you can be killing aliens on a frozen planet, the next you're called home to lead a detective investigation into a court intrigue plot. The game should have something for everyone. The combat is turn-based and not entirely unlike XCOM. It's quite fun when you get the hang of it and there are lots of viable builds. If you're familiar with these types of games normal difficulty shouldn't pose much of challenge, but that's why there's a difficulty slider. There's also ship to ship space combat, it's had some mixed reactions but personally I loved it. Nice little mini-game where you think strategically and upgrade your ship etc. As for drawback there are still a few bugs, but nothing game breaking during my run. It's a big and complex game so I think some bugs can be forgiven. The level up system also isn't great, it's overly complex and pretty convoluted. You have lots of options but probably half of them could have been automatic or omitted. Then there's the writing, sometimes it's too verbose and convoluted. Rouge trader is great when it does "show don't tell", but sometimes it does quite a lot of "tell don't show". It can be good in small doses but when you're forced to read the second "large fan fiction essay" inside of an hour it can get a bit much. A lot of the text could have been cut in half and still delivered the same message and emotional impact. So the game isn't perfect, but overall this is a big, epic and original CRPG. Absolutely worth playing.

Ghost Song

Not perfect but still a great experience

It lacks the last 10% of polish and game-play testing of something like Hollow Knight but it's still a wonderful and quite charming metroidvania RPG-adventure. The story has an existential and ghostly twist to it so if you like things like Hollow Knight, Death's Gambit, Ori, The swapper etc you should like this. Three things I will say 1) the normal mode is quite hard in places, think Hollow Knight 2) The game doesn't hold you hand that much, the beginning can be quite hard 3) When you start the game don't go left the first thing you do, go right.. I think what's keeping it from being a solid five star game is probably the ending(s) and some difficulty spikes on some bosses.

Cyberpunk 2077

Finished CP2077. It's a no-brainer.

Old-school gamer here. Mario, Metal Gear, Street Fighter, Zelda, Baldur's Gate, Monkey Island, Half-Life, Fallout, KOTOR, Dragon Age, Pillars of Eternity, Larian Studios, Hollow Knight, Witcher etc etc etc. Don't kid yourself, this is a five star game. Just buy it.

Miasma Chronicles

Diamond in the rough

Just like the developers previous game - Mutant Year Zero - this game is primarily a stealth game, and you only switch to full-on combat at the last possible moment. Some enemies you don't even need to engage if they seem scary right now and you don't want to, you can come back later. Play on normal difficulty and "full tactical", thank me later. There's a really, really great game here, maybe even a fantastic one. But it suffers a bit from a few narrative choices. For instance there's one part involving a friend and a bathtub which is honestly is just a bit much, then there's a robot companion which is very stereotypically black sounding (and not in a good way). And finally towards the end of the game there are some very questionable story choices regarding who's the main protagonist and why. The ending is "cool" and a lot of stuff happens but from a player perspective, trying to identify with a character, it feels pretty weird and illogical. There's a also a female protagonist who's way cooler than the "main guy", I wonder if they shouldn't have made her the main character all the way through. Despite all this the world is absolutely gorgeous to look at, 10/10 for world building and graphic design. Truly 10/10 for graphic design. And then the story and the journey, despite being a bit cheesy in places, is overall very interesting and enjoyable from a sci-fi perspective. Overall it's a fantastic game, I had a great time with it. If you liked their previous game, Mutant Year Zero, chances are very high you'll like this one too. Similarly if you're a sci-fi fan chances are also high you'll enjoy the story and world-building. But there are undoubtedly also a few questionable choices, and like many games it probably could have used 6 more month in play-testing, so no top marks I'm afraid. But a very enjoyable 4/5 from this small but talented studio.

The Excavation of Hob's Barrow

Great classic mystery adventure game

Starts slow but soon evolves into a game with plenty of lovecraftian vibes, a little classic Sherlock Homes in here too. A pretty unique and interesting story overall, great voice acting and logical puzzles. if there's anything holding the game back it's probably the low resolution and lack of multiple endings. A few unresolved threads as well (The Fair Folk?? Violin girl??). I think the team should start right away on an "enhanced version", double the resolution, more detail and two more endings depending on your choices. This could potentially be a real timeless adventure game classic that goes on to sell +100k copies over ten years.

TUNIC

What it actually felt like to play Zelda

This is what it actually felt like to play The Legend of Zelda on the NES, or the A Link to the Past on the SNES back in the day. You felt a bit in over your head, you didn't understand everything, puzzles could be vague, there were secrets everywhere. You have maps, you collect an in-game instruction booklet (important!!), you have a sword, a shield, a grappling hook, a magic wand, bombs... even some of the "darker aspects" from A Link to the Past is here... sort of. It's very cool and very nostalgic. An open love letter to games gone by. I did however perhaps think that some of the puzzles were a bit hard, required too much leg work and didn't have enough pay off. When a puzzle stumps you for +20 min and you have to go to google that does take you out of the game, it does break the flow. It was like that in the old days too, you had to ask friends and read Nintendo Power to get all the clues right. It's very nostalgic but I'm not sure this is something to strive for in modern game design? I recently played Death's Door, another fantastic game, and while it isn't as nostalgic is flows much better. The puzzles are much easier and can nearly always be solved with what you see on the screen in front of you. Perhaps somewhere in the middle would be best? I'd love to see a Tunic 2, but I do think the difficulty and vagueness of some of the puzzles can be scaled back a bit. Especially when the reward for these difficult puzzles isn't all that high. For instance you locate 20 of something very hard to get, and solve a VERY hard riddle in the instruction booklet, and the reward is something you already have.. it's an important piece overall but it's something you already have. After +10h of puzzle solving I think you should expect more. Still, considering the very small team this game is still absolutely extraordinary and I had a blast with it. 100% recommend if you want a nostalgia trip, or want to experience what gaming on the NES and SNES actually felt like.

Death's Gambit: Afterlife

One of my favorite games of 2021

Old school gamer and RPG player here.. This was one of my top three games for 2021, and one of the best RPG's I've played in a long-long time. The story is surprisingly deep and compelling. Game play is challenging but rewarding. Lots of secrets and twists, fun humor, great art style, doesn't follow convention but tries to show you something new. 100% recommended.
