One of the better Metroidvanias I played

I'd say this is more Metroid than Vania. It distinctly reminds me of Metroid Fusion as far as pacing, the otherworldly sci-fi atmosphere, and gameplay. It does start out a little slow, but certainly gets better as you find upgrades. There is a simple leveling system that lets you tweak to fit your playstyle between a gunner or melee, plus a few handfuls of items and weapons that can be mixed and matched. I personally found melee to be slow and clunky compared to gunning, but I also didn't focus on leveling up that play style. It uses the Souls system of gaining experience, which I wish by now would die a slow death in the video game world. I never liked chasing down my dropped experience, but because the Souls games made it popular it has infested way too many games. At least this game is challenging but not punishing so it wasn't controller-throwing frustrating to die and have to recollect dropped experience. The world-building and story are pretty great, and several NPCs wander the world with their own story. I do wish there was some expansion on the overall universe. There's a grand cosmic story of life after death in the background, plus the planet you are trapped on has other nefarious biological evils driving wayward travelers mad, but mainly Ghostsong's story arc is focused on helping out a band of marooned shipmates. I wish it would have gone a little further on the larger narrative it teases. Maybe in a sequel someday I hope? The atmosphere, music, and sound design is very alien and gooey. The New Game+ still has some value, expecially as on my first run I still had a lot of blank spots in my inventory for items hidden around the map, and getting a refresher on the story is a nice way to fill out gaps in the backstory that were easy to miss the first time around.

Super Metroid with a hint of Dark Souls

I very much enjoyed this game. The gameplay is nice and the controls feel very responsive, the music is great, the voice acting is on point, the underlying themes of love, hope, and redemption tug at the heart strings, and the boss fights require actual strategy. There's also a new game+, which is always a welcome feature. If you're a fan of metroidvanias, especially of the Dust: An Elysian Tail persuasion, I highly recommend Ghost Song.

Excellent Atmospheric Metroidvania

Great game, great atmosphere and art style. Don't get this expecting a challenging metroidvania, I think souls-like is deceptive beyond losing resources on-death. This game is about landing on a somber, haunting, and utterly alien planet, immersing yourself and discovering secrets/lore/environmental storytelling, and taking your time with it. Don't rush it, and don't expect some crazy challenge. Expect a journey, and it's well worth 20 euro.

Good Mertroidvania

Ghost Song is a Metroidvania with Souls-like elements. The story follows a newly-awakened Deadsuit who took upon herself to assist the surviving crew of a crashed spaceship. There are no story-related choices (the main character auto-replies in dialogues), though some of the mandatory objectives can be achieved in different order. The story and the dialogues are written well, and the characters are likeable, so the protagonist’s lines are fitting and going along with the objectives comes easy. The combat is functional - the main default weapon is a gun with rather limited range, while the damage decreases the farther the target is. There are other ranged weapons with different attack types and abilities, as well as melee weapons. It should be noted that there is contact damage and it hits as hard as a normal attack from the respective foe, which usually makes ranged combat preferable. The main character has few attributes which can be upgraded at the infrequent fast travel points, while the save points are much more plentiful. Additionally, there are modules, which provide quality changes to the protagonist’s abilities, such as healing while attacking in melee, double jumping, or being able to see foes’ health bars. The bosses are diverse, challenging, and have some background story. The main aspect of a Metroidvania is exploration, and the world is interesting and engaging to explore. There are a lot of optional paths and secrets, while the traversal is comfortable. There are very fast travel points, but the map is not too large. Additionally, the locations change slightly as the story progresses, most notably, during the return-to-camp sequences, while new abilities allow to access previously unreachable areas. The visual design is stunningly beautiful and easy to read at the same time. The controls are reasonably comfortable and rebindable (mice are supported). No significant bugs have been encountered. The only flaw is auto-saving in the same slot.
