This was an original xbox game to give you an idea of the vintage. Action "RPG". It's no dark souls but like a proto-dark souls. RPG elements: - classes. Each class has a mix of weapons and armor. Light and Dark side have 6 classes each (plus some hidden iirc). - Gear determines abilities for the most part. E.g. wizards have light armor but get a staff which enables spells. - gear. Weapons, shields, armor, equippable items (bows, bombs, etc). - find gold in each level; use gold to buy gear to outfit your character (gold is probably better understood as "points", e.g. once you've found all 100 gold in a level, you can wear any items up to 100 gold; if you unequip them you get all the gold back). - gold and secrets are well hidden, exploring is well rewarded. There is no experience or levelling. The story itself is quite interesting, the levels are thematic and cleverly constructed, with a great variety of enemies. As you unlock new characters you'll get new techniques and items to help you confront each level. There's a decent amount of secrets to discover too. I once got eaten by a shark which I'm sure 90% of players have never seen. It was completely unsignalled and scary as f---. While the combat is simple-ish, it's still quite tactical. Armor is per-body part, e.g. a metal faceplate on a helmet might be almost immune to damage but the leather neckpiece could still let you land a critical hit, especially if you're an archer. There are lots of timing-type options around do I shoot them with a crossbow, use my shield, try to fit in another strike, etc. I had fun with this one, and they put a lot of effort into it. It is pretty difficult though. Enjoy.
Can't believe how many reviews are shitting on this in the year of our lord 2023. This is one of the greatest games ever made, on par or better than Witcher 3 and really there is almost nothing else that comes close. Other games in the top 10 of all time are embarrassed to be in the same list as CP2077. Buy it and play it.
This is a great, great, great game. One of the best city-builders I've ever played, and certainly the one I keep coming back to most. I play it once or twice a year, eking out another achievement, a higher difficulty. Unfortunately I've mostly played it out at this point, beat all of the scenarios on hard & got almost all of the achievements except for the most annoying ones (survival mode I find too stressful/not fun). I'm really hanging out for that sequel which is an insta-buy. Never wanted more content so badly, hah.
The Witcher, Battle Brothers, and Gwent walk into a bar.... It's the only way I can think of to describe this game. You play a party of Slavic peasants in a low(medium!) magic world, gathering resources, scouting areas, and completing quests to ensure your community has a chance to survive. Honestly, some of the best quests I've ever seen in a game are here. If you love the serious tone and occasional hilarity of The Witcher, it's clear the developers have leaned into this (Rock Trolls feature prominently). I think I'm on my seventh play through now (today's the first day of playing). On the first six I got --cked up by Little Red Riding Hood, the Baba Yaga, a Leshen, a Striga, and some other beasties i've forgotten. I helped a dwarf smith get a date with a Rusalka by promising to steal some children for her, except I decided not to steal the children but went back with [powerful item] that caused her a lot of fear and told her "i'm going to kill you unless you go on a date with the dwarf". And then of course there's the fact that the dwarf is called Bodahn and he has a Rock Troll pet called...wait for it.... "Chale" (aka Shale with a C). Seriously just play it. Even if you don't like it I guarantee you - you will see stories and quests you've never seen before and you will be entertained. It's not for everyone, but it's not cookie-cutter filler either. Try it. Seriously. Signed, A New Fan
This is one of the most atmospheric games I've ever played. It's like a cross between FTL and Doom and manages to be fun without being scary despite the setting. The shooting and corridors are a lot of fun, especially when you board an enemy ship and have to clear the place out while being attacked from all sides. The weapons are all a lot of fun and the unlocks, finding suit artefacts and things are generally pretty fun. Unfortunately, the reviews are generally accurate. It is pretty grindy and a lot of the unlocks are basically "grind a lot so you can start with more artefacts so you can grind slightly less on your next run". That said - there simply isn't anything that manages to merge genres like this, and I've really enjoyed my time with it (completed one run and just about to complete my second). I really hope they can take what they've done here and build on it in a sequel. Bravo.
I played this game a lot when I was about 12. It was good at the time because there wasn't a lot of choice and I"d never heard of total war. I put a lot of hours into it, but revisiting it shows up the frustrations. The negative reviews are all pretty accurate. Broadly speaking this game feels frustrating rather than enjoyable. Go and play Lords of the Realm 2, or Lords of Magic if you want a Sierra fix. Each of those will give you more enjoyment than this game - after playing those, then and only then, give this a go if you are feeling brave (and note it is quite different to LOTR 2).
This is a really good game. I had a lot of fun with it and kept playing until I'd seen and done everything (I think). Note that a lot of quests are hidden and many characters have follow-up quests, so keep asking the innkeepers if there are things to do. Unfortunately like many other reviews have noted, there are still a bunch of bugs. I had issues with perpetual loading screens at several points and one or two freezes and CTDs. Some perpetual loading screens can be solved if you use Escape button and skip the cutscene, but at least one of them was totally unsolveable and I had to avoid that character at all costs (fortunately not a main quest character). There are a bunch of balance and pacing issues and an overall lack of polish that I think is fairly typical of a studio's first game. Some skills level up too fast and others level up too slow (lockpicking is a good example), even with a thief playstyle and reading all the lockpicking books and doing all the thieving quests, I still couldn't open all the chests by the end of the game and my skill was only 16. There are a few quests that don't properly reflect some of the decisions you made and things like that but nothing critical. Gear balance is a bit broken. You will end the game with >100k groschen and nothing to spend it on, simply from looting people you kill. What would have been better is if bandit gear topped out at low level plate or even chainmail, forcing you to find treasure/win the tournament/ buy from an armourer to get top level gear. Instead, by midgame you can find the finest smithed cuirasses and pauldrons on random bandits so there's nothing to spend your money on and no point visiting an armorer to go shopping. Still, this is a really enjoyable game, I really liked it and I wish there was more content for it / I hope there's a sequel. I also hope they do another game like this (same systems, levelling up etc) but in a fantasy world - that would be amazing.
