when i was gifted this by a friend to redeem on steam, i didnt know what to think of the thing, and i presumed it to be a primitive Dark Souls, and in some ways, it is. but in others, its its own thing.
keeping it short, i have to say its best described as "delightfully clunky" and kinds goofy. its not only a fun, unique and for its time, advanced title that also has old school aspects like secret characters. But its unintentionally hilarious and a nice blast to the past. while certainly not a perfect game, it keeps me interested and begs for some wider coverage. give it a try, just dont expect the game to be timeless or smooth
A fun game where you have 2 campaigns, one for the good guys and one for the bad guys already an interesting concept. The game has a great art direction i made a lot scenic screen shots. Also great variety weapons and characters like humans, elves, trolls and busty sorceresses
First the combat is bit clunky but i great once you figure it out also this is one of those games where you meant to replay levels or change characters once you notice you messed up for example you'll get to level with fire gnomes they deal fire damage even after the attack, here you just to pick the elven cheater because it has an ice shield. That said some characters are more useful than others for light path you will stick to the engineer once unlocked and for dark path one of the two sorceresses.
But don't worry about loosing progress or replaying long levels over and over again or complicated rpg mechanics the levels are ferly short and and the somewhat longer ones have checkpoints in-between. Before I started this game i finished The Witcher 3 with 100 hours in and I have to say shorter games have their merit.
The only thing i wish this game had was that future from RTCW where you are close to the exit of the level you'll gat a heads up this game needed it.
You should play it definitely its a hidden game that a bit rough around the edges.
Enclave is a true gem from the early 2000s that has found a well-deserved home on GOG. It’s a classic action-adventure that wears its old-school influences proudly, and while it may show its age in some areas, there’s still plenty to love about this gritty hack-and-slash journey.
Pros: The biggest draw of Enclave is the vibrant, gritty atmosphere that comes to life through its two distinct campaigns: Light and Dark. This dual-story structure gives you the chance to play as both heroes and villains, exploring unique environments and storylines that add depth to the fantasy world. The visuals, though dated by today’s standards, still carry an undeniable charm, with detailed environments and a sense of grandeur that’s hard to forget.
Combat in Enclave is challenging and engaging, requiring you to carefully manage attacks, blocks, and dodges. The variety of characters you can play, from fierce knights and skilled archers to dark sorcerers, keeps things fresh, and the loot system offers satisfying rewards that allow for some customization. The game’s soundtrack also deserves mention, with epic orchestral tracks that complement the action perfectly.
Cons: However, Enclave isn’t without its flaws. The controls can feel clunky, especially if you’re accustomed to modern fluidity in combat and movement. This can lead to moments of frustration, particularly during platforming sections or intense battles. The difficulty spikes are real, and the save system is limited, so be prepared to replay sections multiple times if you’re not careful.
The narrative, while serviceable, won’t win any awards for depth or originality. It’s a fairly standard fantasy fare, but the real appeal lies in the atmosphere and gameplay rather than the story.
This was an original xbox game to give you an idea of the vintage. Action "RPG". It's no dark souls but like a proto-dark souls.
RPG elements:
- classes. Each class has a mix of weapons and armor. Light and Dark side have 6 classes each (plus some hidden iirc).
- Gear determines abilities for the most part. E.g. wizards have light armor but get a staff which enables spells.
- gear. Weapons, shields, armor, equippable items (bows, bombs, etc).
- find gold in each level; use gold to buy gear to outfit your character (gold is probably better understood as "points", e.g. once you've found all 100 gold in a level, you can wear any items up to 100 gold; if you unequip them you get all the gold back).
- gold and secrets are well hidden, exploring is well rewarded.
There is no experience or levelling.
The story itself is quite interesting, the levels are thematic and cleverly constructed, with a great variety of enemies. As you unlock new characters you'll get new techniques and items to help you confront each level. There's a decent amount of secrets to discover too. I once got eaten by a shark which I'm sure 90% of players have never seen. It was completely unsignalled and scary as f---.
While the combat is simple-ish, it's still quite tactical. Armor is per-body part, e.g. a metal faceplate on a helmet might be almost immune to damage but the leather neckpiece could still let you land a critical hit, especially if you're an archer. There are lots of timing-type options around do I shoot them with a crossbow, use my shield, try to fit in another strike, etc.
I had fun with this one, and they put a lot of effort into it. It is pretty difficult though. Enjoy.
