Croc Legend of the Gobbos Platinum Edition

A Masterclass In Preserving A Classic

Croc Remastered is legitimately one of my go-to examples of a modern console remaster/port. A classic PSone game for newer consoles and hardware, capturing what we love about the original and creatingthe DEFINITIVE way to play this game, without question. The opening Argonaut screen with the gobbos on the TV screen, the hybrid console scheme between classic tank and full analog, the single button graphics toggle and resolution options, the PACKED TO THE BRIM Crocipedia, complete with scans of the Japanese strategy guide... this is insane. The dynamic soundtrack and faster load times make enjoying the atmosphere of this game EVEN EASIER with less breaks in my play time. Literally, the only loading screen is as the game loads, it is SO FAST! And the old password system works too?! Knowing the ONLY bug I have run into so far is something Argonaut Games have been made aware of is incredibly comforting, given their approach to polish and refine the game before committing to launch. I imagine the mace hit-boxes will be fixed before too long, so aside from a single screen I needed to damage boost through to survive, it has been a flawless experience. Having the DOS version as a purchase bonus is just the icing on the cake for game preservation.

Croc Legend of the Gobbos

Absolutely fantastic celebration of Croc

Not only a phenomenal celebration of the crocodile's first title, but with so much attention to detail recapturing the original game, both in retro graphical style and in atmosphere. Provides very welcome improved control scheme creating a rad hybrid of full analog and the classic tank controls which make it buttery smooth to control and platforming better than ever. Couple that with the pack in bonuses in the Crocipedia, beta soundtrack, merch and guidebook scans, and the DOS version as a GOG extra, this game is a true act of preserving Croc's foray into the platforming game world. Could not recommend more highly, here's hoping he's here to stay for a good while.

Konami Collector's Series: Castlevania & Contra

Impressive for legacy, but obsolete

A nifty collection I bought well before the Contra Collection or any of the Castlevania collections released. At the time, from a legacy perspective, it was neat, but it had massive limitations. Features the NES Castlevania trilogy and the first two Contra games for NES - and only localised roms in English. Only options configuration are universal control mapping, typical A + B, Start and Select. Offers save and load states, but no shortcuts or keybinds and only one per game, and also can only be played in fullscreen mode. Combined with barebones menus, it is a neat nugget of a bygone time where this was the ONLY collection on PC for these titles, but with Contra 1 through to Hard Corps existing with with their arcade ports and Japanese versions, alongside 3 Castlevania collections and the Requiem pack, there are considerably better polished alternatives.

Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty - Alf's Escape

Alf was the final escapee all this time!

What can I say? Alf's mission is to make tea and escape the farm. And he's all out of tea. Seeing Abe's Oddysee tightened up and refined in the base game is one thing, but seeing an extension in the form of an additional FIFTH Zulag is by far one of the most clever DLCs I've ever played. We see areas inspired by prototype screenshots and mock ups in the Oddysee manual, we see areas teased EVEN FURTHER in the background that we can go to, we even find homages to commercials of the original game! And then... AND THEN the game asks you to guide the 300th Mudokon back through it all, complete with a rehab and tea filled with SO MANY OTHER REFERENCES! This little 20-40 minute adventure is just a taste of what Oddworld were considering moving forward. ... and coming back to review this now having played SoulStorm, I can directly see where this was the first piece in a bigger puzzle. I absolutely love this DLC, it feels equal parts new and yet Mandela effect levels of familiar. Play it, save Alf, explore Zulag 5. It's an absolute steal.

Oddworld: Soulstorm Enhanced Edition

New n Tasty perfected, SoulStorm evolved

There are not enough words for how much I absolutely love what SoulStorm accomplishes, and after the release of New 'n' Tasty, Oddworld's goal to REIMAGINE Abe's Exoddus with far more than the 9 months the PSone game had meant it could be approached as originally intended. GAMEPLAY: What results is a game that takes note of everything from the previous titles blended perfectly into the Oddysee remake and goes "how do we expand this?" How intuitive the inventory and crafting is, how streamlining the GameSpeak makes quick decision making and co-operative puzzle solving have new options, the fact SLIGS have an expanded arsenal of weapons changes the sense of dread and scale in ways I didn't think possible. Not to mention MINI BOSSES! STORY: Lore opportunities covered in concept art got a chance to be implemented; Fleeches had a chance to evolve too! No longer larval, they are TERRIFYING! The expansion of Necrum to differentiate itself rather than retelling Disc 1 as "Scrabania and Paramonia but different" was genius. Not to mention expanding the Mudokon legacy, while still leaving enough a mystery to the player that we have more to learn going forward. AND THE BREW'S PURPOSE! OH MY WOW! REPLAY VALUE: I'll just say it: getting the bad ending first was terrifying, but it really sold what the whole game was emphasising that the stakes are higher, the risks are dearer, and while failure mirrors the end of Exoddus, there are actual consequences for taking the easy solution. And revisiting older areas to get better Quarma to get to the Brewery felt so rewarding! There's too much to go over, but I easily poured 50 hours into my first playthrough, and I am so stoked to revisit it for additional clean-up. This has become my new favourite game, and I could not recommend it enough.
