2025 BAFTA Games Awards Nominee - 'Game Beyond Entertainment'
• Celebrating 40 captivating years of Tetris®!
• Includes more than 15 playable classic Tetris games, and an all-new Tetris game – Tetris Time Warp.
Unrivaled after four decades, Tetris Forever celebrates the original, genre-inspiring puzzle game that escaped from behind the Iron Curtain, onto the world stage, and into our cultural consciousness!
More than 15 playable classic games from the series' history are featured, including many being released for the first time outside Japan. Battle your friends in the multiplayer cult favorite Tetris Battle Gaiden, create massive explosions to clear lines in Super Bombliss, and see where it all began in 1984 with an accurate recreation of the first version of Tetris on the Electronika 60 computer.
As the next release in Digital Eclipse's acclaimed Gold Master Series, Tetris Forever includes more than an hour of all-new documentary featurettes exploring the lifelong friendship and creative partnership between Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov and The Tetris Company founder Henk Rogers, as they share the extraordinary but true story about Tetris that you never knew.
And as this celebration wouldn’t be complete without an all-new Tetris experience, prepare to enter the… Tetris Time Warp! Up to four players will "warp" between different eras of Tetris in real time to experience a variety of classic graphic styles and play mechanics!
In a world where games come and go – Tetris is Forever!
Thanks to the reviewers who pointed out Digital Eclipse's scummy tactic of releasing a product to GOG and then immediately abandoning it (while the product receives updates on other platforms), I will never, ever purchase any product from Digital Eclipse, on any platform.
There were a bunch of games that I would've considered buying with the sale going on at the time of this review, but I've decided against all of them. I buy games on GOG because they're DRM free and because they're maintained. I will not support scammers like Digital Eclipse.
Note: This game's low score on GOG seems related to misinformation - the game is fully updated and always has been on GOG, and somewhat telling, the verified owner score for this game is 4.6/5, not 1.9/5.
The "most helpful review" (at time of writing) is full-on misinformation - Digital Eclipse's self-published games have always been kept up-to-date on GOG and they support the platform well; it is Atari who is to blame for all the issues on Digital Eclipse's non self-published games here.
This is a great collection of Tetris games throughout history; while it misses some of the more heavy hitters (such as NES Tetris), there's no shortage of great Tetris games to try out here.
The documentary is well researched and very interesting to watch if you're a fan of Tetris.
The Tetris Time Warp game is a little simple, but it's a fun little modern guideline Tetris game on GOG that getting this package on sale is worth it just for Tetris Time Warp (assuming you're happy with having a simple guideline game without all the bells and whistles).
It would be great to see some more games on here, and perhaps have Tetris Time Warp expanded to have more warps (there's only 3 time zones) and more modes, however!
See a lot of reviews bashing this game. The only 2 that it's missing for me is Magical Tetris Challenge, and Tetris DS, but Nintendo and Disney have their greasy little claws wrapped around those. But who cares! Mainly for nostalgia's sake. The Tetris games on here are great (Apple IIe anyone?). I look forward to more of this kind of stuff to be released on GOG.
The stuff that was added in later patches elsewhere (Welltris, Super Tetris, AcademySoft Tetris v3.12, new modes to TimeWarp) is indeed in the current GOG version. That means all 21 games/builds present in other versions are here.
Overall for a discounted price I'd say it's a decent get. Tetris has a fascinating history from conception to market and the point of the Gold Master Series is bringing that story to the forefront and letting you get hands-on with how this icon in gaming evolved. If you're a stickler for the nitty gritty details of version to version minutiae in the original Tetris, you have a lot here, including a bits not released westward originally or ever re-released at all. Obviously the key omission here is the GameBoy iteration that put Tetris on the true global stage, but that being produced by Nintendo it's no surprise it's not here (not entirely away, 1989 mode in Tetris Time Warp is very much Digital Eclipse trying to skirt this omission as best as they legally could.)
Controls are mostly remap-able per game now and that's helpful if you're on keyboard too, thankfully there's not a whole lot you need to map and remember. It's scant on options but then all I needed was window/borderless and I have that so great. Overall it's nice to have even one version of Tetris at all finally be sold legitimately DRM-free. We could've had significantly worse choices for our one and only DRM-free fix and thankfully this isn't a bad one.
