Translating an existing property into a video game is never easy, especially when that property is Dungeons & Dragons. D&D is a huge open world, pen and paper RPG known for its countless settings, spells, races, classes, items, creatures and ways to play the game. Fitting that into the framework of video games is a daunting task, but legendary developer BioWare, with the immense success of Baldur's Gate already under their belts, was more than up to the challenge. The story begins when your newly created character approaches the eponymous city in response to a call for aid. Neverwinter is suffering from a dreadful plague, called the Wailing sickness, and Aribeth, a paladin and respected public figure, has sent out a call for able, well-armed adventurers to help solve their crisis. You meet with Aribeth but you're no sooner hired than your combat skills are put to the test by invading thieves. The subsequent investigation blooms into a tale rife with intrigue and ancient mysteries that will keep you enthralled until the closing credits. The gameplay is classic BioWare CRPG, with intuitive menus, exciting and clever tactical combat and a huge amount of content in the core story, plus lengthy expansions and a robust campaign editor. BioWare also makes fantastic use of the D&D license. The numerous classes are bolstered with numerous ways to play each and every one of them, the main story is great but the game never restricts you in the least and the tactical combat allows you to make use of huge number of spells and abilities unique to D&D in very creative ways. Finally, if the game has one fault, it comes in the technical standpoint. The huge area maps and building interiors are detailed and well designed, but the character models look very outdated and the animations are often stilted. The sound, however, is wonderful with a great soundtrack and sound effects. If you're new to D&D games and/or CRPGs, start with this gem from BioWare's exceptional library.
