I'm writing this having just beaten the game, including the "Master Cave" levels, which are diabolical. Number 5 of those, in particular, took me hours to complete (after I worked out how). The millisecond-perfect dexterity required was something else. If I hadn't beaten it eventually, this would be a 4-star review (but it still needs to be made easier). The boss fights are too difficult for a casual oldie gamer like me. My 360 Controller takes the character up whenever I accidentally clicked the direction button (usually when I was trying to go down in a hurry). I swore many times at that. Having to restart a screen is usually painless but, on a handful of levels, is extremely irritating. I need a "five second undo" feature!! ;-) Those moans aside, I thoroughly enjoyed the game. Yes, you can get to the ending very fast if you want to, but that doesn't mean you've beaten the game. That takes double or triple the total time. Great graphics, sound, design. Well worth the blind-buy from GOG. :-)
Well, this is a jolly inventive platformer. Looks suitably retro, sounds great, responsive controls, inventive levels, highly addictive. I write this review having just completed the main part of the game (escaping the prison). That took me (not an elite gamer, by any stretch) 6hrs and 238 deaths! There's another world after that which is ridiculously difficult. It's not even worth attempting for an old-timer like me. That's sometimes the problem with the main game: even when you know what to do to beat it, you need precise timing and pixel-perfect precision to progress. If you make a mistake, you must restart the level. On some levels, this is extremely frustrating. That knocks the enjoyment factor a bit (there's no mid-level save feature). Overall though, well worth five bucks of your money. :-)
