Heroes of Might and Magic® 2: Gold

Classics revived

Amazing game, with all its flaws. Thanks GOG for making it so easy to enjoy it again!

Call of Cthulhu®

Dialogs ruin the game

Story is OK, audio/visuals are good, gameplay is what you expect from a 1st person horror. Overall quite descent, could be a solid 4 of 5. However inconsistent dialogs make zero sense most of the time and just dont connect with the game plot and twists at all. They ruin the whole story progression completely. Half of the replics are out of sync with previous events and second half lead to dialog progression that is completely out of sync with original starting replic. Someone clearly tried to seem much smarter then he/she is. If you could remove 80% of the dialogs the game could actually way more enjoyable.

HROT

Quake in Pripyat

Somewhat post-nuclear catastrophe horror vibe on one hand and raw meaty surreal action from Quake I on the other. With bits of dark totalitarian aesthetics mixed with 'plague' epidemic and eery sound design. Very cool, very 'dusk'ish' in some aspects but still feels quite unique and outstanding. No too much from the story point of view, hopefully that will be improved once full version is released. Not asking for a novel here, but still some indirect narative would be nice to have. In terms of gameplay - very energetic, filled with fast paced combat with quite a varying zoo of enemies. Once you get enough ammo it becomes a bit less challenging even on hard level, but maybe that was me abusing the save/load system :) Definitely worths it's money, cannot wait for the full release! A must-have for any old-school FPS lover. PS. Unfortunately already bought this on Steam while it was on sale, but hopefully GoG version is not completely different ;)

Project Warlock II Demo

Definite improvement

Quick feedback after 2 hours of gameplay. Clearly better then the 1st one, not as flat and simple as the predecessor. Game play is more dynamic and challenging, different types of weapons now actually make sense depending on the situation. So far quite enjoyable.

Songs of Conquest

Good, but needs work

Slightly bellow expectations, but nothing fatal that cannot be fixed, hopefully it will. Goods: * very cool art, both visual and audio * good strategy, motivates to think and plan, not just to hoard troops and brute-force you victory * nice rework of classical game mechanics with a few cool additions * long awaited modernized and improved version of HOMM 2/3, what else do you need? :) Bads: * embarrassingly slow. I get it that optimization is not the main goal for the early release, but guys, this is just awful! I have nice PC with SDD / 16 BG RAM / GTX 2070 / Core I7 and this one plays as if I'm back in high school trying to run Heroes 4 on Celeron 300 with 32 mb of RAM. Unacceptable. * not quite sure if any of the special abilities of the troops actually matter, so far they don't seem to affect anything that much, mb need more time to get it right * somewhat flicky and random magic casting system, not sure if I like it * lack of interactivity on the map, tons of nice animated objects for no reason, cannot interact with them and they just add to the visual noise, unlike in HOMM series, where each object meant something Overall looks like a nice start of a game that could make it. Hopefully more content will be added and issues will be fixed. Best of luck to to the developers, you're on right track!

Warpips

Perfect for a quick break

No micro-management, no direct control over units, no base-building. Very fast-paced combat, great balance between need for tactics and arcade skills, small amount of upgrades while each of them matters. Not a game that requires diving deep into its perils, but a very enjoyable way to waste 30-40 mins after lunch.

WRATH: Aeon of Ruin

Pretty dope but far from perfect

Pros: 1) very cool rework of the engine, physics feels great and lively. This take on particles system playing 'retro' is very cool. Just very right proportion of modern flicks with old-school basics. 2) Sound design is flawless, guns and monsters and and music and ambient and everything - all sounds very catchy and atmospheric 3) Levels design is beautiful, arenas are great for fighting in both open spaces and close quarters. Cons: 1) freaking AI. Honestly, even in Doom 30 ears ago monsters were more clever. I mean come on, this is just embarrassing! Most of the time they just stand still and fire at you or trying to get to you and stuck at the corner or some minor obstacle. This pretty much ruins the gameplay, especially in close encounters. 2) Poor balance. Even at 'difficult' level - it is still only 'hard' in the very beginning. Once you get past first 15 minutes, you practically never even close to running out of ammo or health pick-ups. Artifacts just lie around for no reason, you can do just fine without them. And once again - due to monsters being slow as snails, it all becomes pretty irritating. Ion Maiden from same team feels much more thrilling and exiting. If that was a full release, I would only give it 3 stars tops. But of course due to it being a very early version, I truly believe developers will have enough time to fix the dynamics, cause this thing has imense potential! I won't even be upset to wait for 2 more years just to see this thing done right, cause given the Dusk and Amid Evil at the market, the bar is pretty high!

AMID EVIL

Fantastic artwork and dynamic gameplay

This game is probably best modern thing that you can compare to classics like Heretic / Hexen (closer to Heretic). Unfortunately already bought it on Steam 3 months ago during early-access. Finished 3 episodes so far, all of the them are quite distinct in terms of enemies / play-style and overall dynamics, which is great - game does not get repetitive and boring. Visual art-work is just outstanding, great levels design and detalization. On my machine had a few sound-glitches, but nothing really serious. Game weaponry is various and on 'hard' level game pushes you to choose right tool for the fight, otherwise victory is unlikely. Overall - very nice game, mb not as outstanding as Dusk, but still very decent.

Blood: Fresh Supply

Good old route, new ride

Lots of people complain that version has issues regarding sound or frames sync or just plainly does not work. I really feel for them and hope GoG will reimburse their losses. For me however this version works perfectly fine (ROG laptop, Windows 10 64x), everything is really smooth and seamless. Great update of the best of the classics, like riding some old beautiful road but in a new up-to-date car :) Keyboard + mouse combination really adds to this game, not takes away from it. Sound is flawless, no artifacts noticed. Overall - as one of reviewers said, this release is a perfect reason to enjoy this mastepiece once more with some intact modern improvements.

Overload

They did it again

Amazing dynamics, great graphics and tricky 3d-labirythngs. Everything that we all so loved in the 'original' Descent series is now back with the vengeance on steroids. This game is a living example the good ideas and concepts never die. My biggest thanks to the creators! And now some more technical details: - graphics 4 out of 5 (but hey, it's and indi-release!) - controls 5 out of 5, just right what you expect - gameplay 5 out of 5, very catchy and dynamic, probably even more dynamic then original one - plot 3 out of 5 quite generic and flat, but to be honest - this is not the game that play for its plot, are you? ;) - sound 5 out of 5, really puts you into the cockpit of a ship Very recommended to all who love dynamic fast-paced shooters and also a 'must-have' for all you enjoyed Descent back in the 90s.
