POSTAL 2

Psychopath simulator?

This game is one of those games that lets you do all kinds of terrible things "IF" you want to. That's essentially the premise of it. If you want to let out your inner psycho and do messed up stuff then this is a game you might like. For anyone who wants to play a decent FPS this is NOT it. The entire game world is set up to aggravate the player into going "postal" and it does it by making you do these mundane chores in a surreal world. So you go around and do this chore list for the postal dude and along the way you end getting caught in some kind of violent situation. The setting of the world itself is like a caricature of the USA and it has racist and sexist themes all over it. I have no idea what RWS was trying to do here, if they were doing a tongue in cheek jab at how f***ed up the USA is as a country then they hit that nail on the head. I'm guessing they just brainstormed a ton of offensive themes for a game and added them in for shock value. Anyhow the core gameplay is FPS based. You get a variety of weird weapons to use against your enemies and you can go around and just kill people, dogs and other things however you want. It's morbid and the violence is over the top so if you don't like violent games you won't like this at all. As far as the FPS elements go, the game uses the Unreal Tournament 2004 engine and so it's a solid experience visually and sound wise. The shooting mechanics are ok but the AI in this game is really bad so don't be expecting the UT2004 bot level of AI in this game. That's pretty much the game in a nutshell. If you're a 12 year old the humour in this will make you giggle, but as a grown adult with a sense of decency you most likely will find this game to be a piece of garbage.

Deus Ex™ GOTY Edition

Great game.

I remember seeing a feature on this from a gaming magazine back in the late 90s. It was about this sci-fi spy game and it had Warren Spectors name attached to it which was something because he helped create quite a few great games in the past such as system shock and Ultima underworld. This game was going to use the unreal engine and the images all looked pretty fancy. When I finally got my copy it was amazing to be able to finally play it. The game ran fairly well on my top of the line system back in the day and I remember not knowing what to really expect. Deus Ex has a lot of themes going on in it, and the biggest one revolves around conspiracy theories which feeds into a lot of urban myths. This is a really slick approach and slightly unnerving because of how some of the games events shadow our present. I think it was slick how they chose to release the game in the year 2000. Anyhow the game takes place in 2052 and the world is amidst a pandemic with a disease known as the Gray death which is caused by a nano-virus. The villains are pretty much revealed in the beginning of the games introduction which was a strange choice looking back, but it's these kind of things that show up and really keep the player guessing what might happen next. This is repeated in the wide array of gameplay styles you can choose which really lets the player role play however they wanted. The games protagonist is named JC Denton and his story is also interesting and completely flips the players perspective when they find out Jcs real past. This type of gameplay is creative and no doubt influenced many future game developers as a standard. I think one of the things that also they should be commended for is the fact they were able to cram this huge game onto a cd-rom. If you have not played Deus Ex and want to play a RPG then you can't do much better than this masterpiece.

Red Faction

Revolutionary tech, generic game.

I remember when this came out, it made quite a buzz because of their destructible environment tech. I got to get my hands on a demo of it and like everyone else was amazed at being able to create tunnels in the environment using a rocket launcher. The single player demo was pretty great and combined with this awesome new tech it seemed like the game would be a real success. Anyways the game starts you by getting you into a fight straight off the bat, there is no introduction sequences like Half-life, doom3 and other had which is a shame. You start with a pistol and shoot your way to the top literally. Along the way you'll be fighting guards who all sound the same and shout the same thing at you. Their A.I is fairly good and can offer a challenge, but it doesn't have the same kind of realistic presentation that you get with games like half-life and others. This is too bad because it would have livened this up quite a bit as this who you'll be shooting at for the majority of the game. The arsenal of weapons is stored similar to half-life which is great and it offers you a lot to use. The writing in this is not very good, and one of the main villains literally has plot armour in the form of a nano-shield just so he can introduce himself in a extremely boring manner. I'm not sure why people are giving this game 5 stars? Maybe I'm just missing something.

Diablo + Hellfire

Ahhh Fresh meat

Diablo is one of the first action RPG games I think I ever played. I had no idea what it was about, but the more I played the more I became "addicted" to the fast paced action gameplay. The formula is really simple. You go around killing hordes of monsters in real-time through randomly generated dungeons and level up using a very simple stat system. Oh and you buy and sell various items that ultimately help you defeat tougher enemies. Is it worth the asking price? I would have to say yes, because you also get the very well done soundtrack by Matt Uelman which is utterly unique and fits the game well. It might not be as good as Its successor Diablo II however it is still fun and worth a play through to the end if you enjoy this genre of game.

Thief™ Gold

This is not your average stealth game.

Thief the Dark project was a game I decided to buy based solely off the box art at my local PC shop back in the day. Since I wasn't into buying gaming magazine when it came to the latest games, I had no idea what I was in for. To me it looked like Quake with swords, and wow was I so wrong. This game is first and foremost a stealth based game so if you want a FPS experience maybe check out something else. For tools you have at your disposal a sword, blackjack, bow and a few other interesting tools that will help you escape or fight enemies. The levels you play through are usually quite large in size and will require memorizing the layout as there is no overlay map that shows you where you are. Instead you have to rely on "sketches" of the map which is fairly realistic and this can make the game a bit more challenging since there are no waypoints showing you where to go. In fact this game is very old school in the sense that it doesn't hold your hand at all like modern games. It tough, but rewarding when you actually accomplish the missions at higher difficulty. If you like adventure games full of mystery and magic you will appreciate this game. It has a intriguing storyline and a memorable protagonist. If you are young and only know about the recently released and poorly made Thief remake, I'd give this a try as this is the real deal. This is definitely not your average game and it earned it's cult-status for the amount of detail that looking glass poured into it. Highly recommended! 4/5 Stars from me.
