WRATH: Aeon of Ruin

Add another star if...

...you like enemies spawning in repeatedly and jacking your cortisol levels. Watch out, someone might spawn behind you! This happened enough in the first part and I heard it even gets worse later in the game. Phenomenal-looking game and could've been a 'Quake 2', set in the original Quakeverse. But the game uses cheap monster spawning to put you on edge. Not my thing.

Why not five stars?

This game doesn't have any 'dressings' like a Dusk, Amid Evil, Turbo Overkill or other FPS throwbacks. By dressings I mean buff items (i.e. Quad Damage), 'soul' collection for special attacks, upgrades or any of those things. If you can go without those things, give this game five stars. What you're getting is a shooter with near-perfect movement and level design. Levels aren't overlong and puzzles don't overstay their welcome. Enemies are exactly in the right places. Bosses are sometimes telegraphed but they still can make you shit your pants if you're not paying attention. Some levels throw curveballs at you and you need to work without your trusted gear, but it never feels unfair or gratuitious. What this game does well it does very well. Finally, this is the funniest game I've played in years. I love lampooning of the USSR and if you appreciate it too, you'll be tongue-in-cheeked amused throughout the game or even laugh your ass off. The dark color pallette and ambient nightmare music makes it funny and creepy at the right intervals. The final boss is a bit on the nose but even that's worth a chuckle. The only reason I don't give this 5 stars is, like I said at the beginning, it doesn't have that extra 'oomph factor' a lot of these FPS throwbacks have these days. If that doesn't bother you (and it didn't bother me), give it 5 stars and enjoy this awesome game. Na zdravi!

Slay the Princess — The Pristine Cut

Tiring trial and error

This game has a great concept and I look forward to what comes next from the developers. However, to experience the most this game has to offer, you only have two options. One is picking an option that you don't know will go in a certain direction and just rolling with it (the first several times). The other is knowing your options will go a certain direction and trying different options afterward. Then you repeat the latter option again and again in order to get the most out of the game. If you're at all critical of an overabundance of dialogue options, like in Disco Elysium, then this will quickly grow tiresome. You'll see the same options repeatedly until you choose the right ones to move the game forward. Are some of the dialogue options really good? Yes! But you're required to choose them repeatedly to experience the other outcomes the game has to offer. I can see why some adore this game and have written glowing reviews. But for the price, I'd say only go all in if you're willing to accept the above realities of the game. If you want to try with the opportunity to refund, understand that to experience all the game's options requires a particulary intense session where you perform as many options as you can, repeatedly, to get as many story outcomes as you can before your refund window is up. If you're critical of this kind of mechanic, I simply can't recommend it.

Baldur's Gate 3 - Digital Deluxe Edition upgrade

FRONT-LOADED FIRST ACT

Larian, a fantastic company, repeats the same problem their last very good game, DOS2, has; playing ALL the cards and saving ALL the best content for Act I of the game. DOS2 players will know exactly what I'm talking about. Advice for Larian; -Your game's choicest content needs to be spread throughout all the acts. -Stop railroading players into so many unchangable story outcomes, such as bosses you must kill to finish the game (looking at Act 2 and 3 in particular). -Too many Mary Sue tropes in the characters. Your fans are beginning to notice.

Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic

ULTIMATE REVIEW: READ BEFORE BUYING

This is one of the greatest games ever made. Question is, does it work on modern systems? -Short answer, yes. But keep reading. -The game starts with extra graphic effects turned off. To turn them on, press ctrl+r. -If you do this, your frame rate 'could' tank after some playing. You can just turn them off again. -The game has some impressive campaign maps but the individual scenarios are too symetrical and dull. This can be fixed. -Download the unofficial community patch 1.4. It fixes many aspects of the game without tampering with core gameplay. -Patch 1.4 also gives you access to SUPERB community maps that fixes the problem mentioned above. That's all you need to know to enjoy this incredible game in 2023.

Disciples 2 Gold

What's up, GOG?

I've owned this game for years and not once has the unplayability on modern systems been addressed by GOG. Why is it even on sale? This is outrageous.

Project Warlock II

Controller sensitivity??

Guys I just bought this game and the controller sensitivity even at max is slow. My brain moves faster than the left/right axis does when shooting! Anyone else having this issue?

On Reflection

I love this fucking game. I played it when a relationship was falling apart and I played it again during a serious depression. I'm a lot better now and playing it a third time on Hard. The graphics and music are just perfect and shooting mechanics are suitably awesome. Guns feel good. My only issue with the game is it doesn't have a sequel yet.
