Tyrian 2000

Defining "classic" games

I played it when it first came out and over the years I've played it on and off. Doesn't sound like much, but how many other games can you really say that for? Other "classics" have come and gone but I rarely feel the urge to play them, but I keep on coming back to Tyrian like an old friend. The graphics were great for the time, scalable to your machine of course, but the high-end machines of the time made this a very pretty game indeed. The story and humour of the game are also top-notch: not too over the top and childish, but enough to make you smirk and maybe even giggle every so often. The game is a basic vertical scrolling shooter, but the myriad of different weapons, especially the "rare" weapons like the banana blaster, plus upgrades, increased the replayability to astronomical heights. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to indulge in some nostalgia...
