Serious Sam 4

For Fan since TFE

I don't have much to say. It's a Serious Sam game so you know what you're buying. When you think of this game think of SS3 but with all the bad parts cut from it. It's not a weird trollish milsim for the first hour and a half. It's straight to the action. You start on a huge battlefield with what appears to be literally hundreds and hundreds of enemies. The shooting feels nice. Both shotguns are very reminiscent of classic Doom's shotguns and very satisfying. I mean, it's an SS game. It's a PROPER SS game at that. This one is way more in line with the classics (TFE and TSE) than 3, from the pickups to pace of combat. None of it is slow like SS3, not even in the same ballpark. Keep in mind before purchase that you will need a decent PC to play this game comfortably.

Age of Wonders: Planetfall - Deluxe Edition

My favorite TBS.

I've tried to get into AOW games for many years but the fantasy element never stuck. This is scifi and very entertaining. This and Warhammer Gladius are currently the best TBS games to own.

Space Hulk: Deathwing - Enhanced Edition

Bought on a whim. Regret nothing.

I'm not a huge Warhammer fan but have played some games. This game interested me when it released on Steam but I didn't buy it. Saw it come to GoG and instantly purchased. It's almost like the Aliens game we never got. There's a bit of tactics here and you AI teammates aren't nearly as bad as they could be. Generally your AI teammates have serious problems in games like these but these guys stay with you pretty well and do what they're supposed to do—shoot shit. You'll battle on pretty large maps and have missions to complete along with submissions and relics to find. I've not really gotten to deep in the relic hunt yet. You earn points to upgrade skills and get new guns. You can choose your load-out before every mission, so there's decent room to experiment it seems. It's also pretty challenging which is nice, at least to me. By the end of the first mission my squad member's health-pack was depleted and we were scraping by for survival. The only thing I don't like is there is no Lan support, but it's cross-play between Steam and Gog and people seem to be playing it. Certainly worth your cash.

Warhammer 40,000: Gladius - Relics of War

Civ without the diplo.

If you're a fan of the war part of any Civilization game this game is for you. There's no diplomacy, only war. All the factions feel pretty well balanced. The game speaks for itself. If you like war, strategy, and Warhammer this game is a must.

Xeno Crisis

Classic gameplay, modern improvements

Let’s first get this out of the way: The game is expensive. The price is justified in my book considering the developers created this game originally for Sega, cartridge and all. You can buy the Rom on their site. They’re also working on a Dreamcast disc, too. So I think for the amount of care and work the developers have put into this title justifies the price. The gameplay is great. Inspired by SmashTV and the like, it’s a throwback to the days of old. The levels are randomly generated so every playthrough is slightly different. You collect dog tags from killing enemies which can be used after level completion to upgrade your stats like HP, speed, damage, etc. It’s very hectic and all the enemies are well thought out. You will probably die a lot, and while frustrating sometimes it doesn’t feel unfair because you’ll know when you screwed up. You can get a good grasp of how the game plays by watching the trailer so I won’t spend much time explaining it. I recommend starting on easy. If you want a good old school shooter (the best as of now IMO) this is the title to get. You can play it in short bursts or very long periods of time because it’s addicting attempting to get farther than your last run. I’ve not yet played COOP, (I’m going to buy the Sega rom and use an emulator so me and buddy can COOP over the internet) but I imagine it’ll be blast.. My only real complaint is rebinding controls is not at all user friendly, and it took me about a week to get used to the default keyboard bindings. I imagine it wouldn't be a problem with a controller. The developers have said they plan to address the issue. All in all, if you’re yearning for a well built and polished classic this worthy of your cash

Through the Ages

Crazy Game

I bought out of pure impulse. I love Civilization games and thought this game was like a board game version of it, and it is but very different. When I first went through the tutorial I was completely lost. I played a couple games after and was still lost, but could sense a deep game lurking I just had to figure it out. Then I figured it out, and damn ... it's one of the best strategy games I've ever played. You're going to lose your first couple games. You should probably read over the rules so you understand the more abstract mechanics of production and consumption. The game is like playing Civilization where you're managing your empire and trying to strike a balance. You win by having the most culture points at the end of the game, and there's many different ways to get the most points whether it be by military force and/or proper early preparation. If you're a fan of strategy games this is a gem. Even if you're not really a fan of strategy board games (which I am not). It's one of the deepest strategy games I've played, and the cards make every game completely different.

Jupiter Hell

Jupiter Hell is a no bullshit roguelike.

Let me preface with there's a profanity setting you can set to high, which is awesome. I'm not a huge fan of swords and magic and it's one of the reasons I'm incapable of playing many roguelikes, so immediately this game stood out—it's the successor of Doom roguelike, after all. If you're the type of person that's wanted a roguelike with guns this is that roguelike. It's very easy to grasp, feels polished, and runs well. You will spend your time tactically shooting demons, finding new weapons (rare, unique coming soon, etc), armor, and blasting everything you come across and leveling up. There's mods for weapons you can find, and those will be fleshed out as development continues. Later levels increasingly raise the challenge on Medium. I've not yet tried hard, so I don't know how challenging it is, but from what I've read it can get brutal. Brutal is the whole point of roguelikes, anyway. There's challenge modes and you unlock more the more you beat. A custom game mode option is present but not implemented yet. The price is steep, but I think there's only one or two people developing it and they've been going strong for 7 years with no other job, so the price is understandable. And the game is certainly worthy of your money if you're into these types of games or would like to get into them. This is a more refined and polished Doom Roguelike so if you want an idea of what the game is like you can download DRL for free. The developer has said that he/they will be working on the game for years to come so just think of your purchase as a good investment with an already good product. Everything feels good. The sound is addicting, looting is addicting, shooting is addicting. It's all very punchy. Already various improvements added since I played the limited demo a month ago. Vulkan was also added. Jupiter Hell is a no bullshit roguelike that claims to be roguelike that actually is roguelike not roguelite. If you're into that you will have a good time.

Door Kickers: Action Squad

Old school inspired shooter at its best!

I didn't think this game would come to GoG because the developers said GoG rejected it. So I've been waiting a couple months hoping it'd finally come here and it did. The game is great, it has all the stuff that's typically left out of GoG releases that come from Steam—leaderboards are here, weekly challenges, online and couch CooP. I mean, there's really nothing here not to like other than the map editor is not currently present. The game plays like an old school shooter with a modern twist. You can take cover, you can upgrade your gear and your skills. There's a bit of tactics sprinkled in, too. You will die easily, especially in the beginning. There's multiple classes to choose from each specializing in different tactics. A breacher for example. You can buy flashbangs, guns, armors, etc. The action is fun and somewhat tense. Shooting is satisfying. There's a huge main campaign. There's multiple bad guys that each need to be approached differently. You got weekly challenges, an infinite tower mode, a zombie mode ... If you like the these retro-type of games do yourself a favor and pick it up. Just don’t buy it thinking it’s like OG Door Kickers. This is fun action oriented spin off. Again, the map editor is not here and will hopefully be added soon.

Low Magic Age

Great game.

This game's a steal for the price. Typically I find tbs roguelikes and games similar to this boring, but everything is well made. Skills and combat seems deep. There's a big map to explore. I haven't spent too much time with it yet because I don't have the time, but from what I played the quality is top notch. If this is the foundation the finished product might be a masterpiece.
