Way of the Hunter

DH2005 and Classic Cabela's

If you've played The Hunter in recent years you'll know there hasn't been much choice in the hunting genre. I still play Deer Hunter 2005 once a year. Call of the Hunter is more akin to classic days of hunting games. You're not paying real money to hunt specific animals, or spending real money for a shotgun. If you're a fan of DH2005 and have been waiting for a DRM-Free modern and challenging hunting game this is it. There's a couple of problems on release like no FOV slider that every one freaked about, for some reason, but already two patches have released addressing issues and the game launched yesterday. There's different difficulty levels, the last one more realistic with no helpers and it's hard but fun if you're into hunting games. The game has a story which some might like but I don't really care, you don't have to pay much attention to it. Two maps are going to be released soon. This is just the start of a very good foundation to finally knock theHunter out of top spot in the market.... plus it's drm free!

Talisman: Digital Classic Edition

Best Board Game on Gog.

I was hesitant to buy this at first with all the dlc so I waited until a sale and just bought the base game. If you want a very good board/card game on Gog this is the one to get. Each pack is a pretty decent purchase with the content it adds to your board game, especially on sale.

Distant Worlds 2

DW:U Upgraded

Think DW:U but on a modern engine and now in 3d. They rewrote the engine from the ground up for DW2. There's a couple less races than DW:U because the game is now 3d, but the developers have addressed this and state more are to come. I didn't take the time to play Distant Worlds until after I played Stellaris. While Stellaris is good at what it does it lacks some things I find enjoyable. One of those things is supply lines. Resources you need to build things (ships, bases, etc.) is more complex than Stellaris and it opens your strategic options to a big degree. When at war, you can attack key resources to cripple the enemy, and the space battles feel better than Stellaris and a bit more "raw." When a ship is destroyed there's debris and parts floating around. I've had a few perfromance hiccups but I started playing on launch day and they seem to be working to resolve them. If you liked DW:U DW2 is just as good with a nice refinement and modernization of the UI and some mechanics. DW2 has major potential to overtake Stellaris in the 4x space genre.

Axis & Allies 1942 Online

Best digital version

If you want to play Axis and Allies on the PC this is the version to buy. It's everything the board provides. My only gripe is once you get good at it the AI isn't really a challenge, but the developers are still working on it so there's plenty hope of improvement. That's not a problem though if you're trying to play with other people, there's always people playing. Recommended purchase.

Cartel Tycoon

Fantastic Production Value

I gambled and took a chance buying this game not knowing much about. The game is built on the Unreal Engine. There's story mode, sandbox, survival (not implemented) and multiplayer (not implemented). The story mode is actually pretty good right now. You're tasked with building up a cartel empire, you have to produce drugs and hire lieutenants, etc. The way you buy and build properties reminds me a bit of Tropico. I'm not too far into it yet, and I know this is a bare review but for an early access game this is for sure one of the better ones I've gambled on. I've not yet touched sandbox mode but am looking forward to it. Also survival which I'm assuming will be you VS other cartels. There's that in the story mode as well. The whole point of the game is establishing an economic network: build businesses, make money, expand your territorial control for more business opportunities. Obviously you're money makers are plantations where you grow your drug crops and interconnect them with distribution areas (airfields, seaports, etc.) for dirty money that you'll need to launder through legitimate businesses that you can also establish for legal money. You'll also be able to hire lieutenants to assist your captain or captains, all with their own stats. Increase their experience to be able to access more of their abilities. There's wanted stars you can gain which will launch investigations and you'll have to shut down your business until the investigation is over..... the boys in blue will be coming for you. So far so good. Much higher quality than many EA games I've purchased. It also runs nicely, and I've not had any crashes as of yet.

It Lurks Below

Diablo 2's incestuous child, probably.

I own it on Steam and about to buy it here as well. The game is an amazing 2-d Diablo with guns, mixed with a bit of Minecraft and a bit of Don’t Starve. The survival elements are a bit weird at first, but once you get the hang of it it’s not bad at all, especially once you’re able to craft a couple Warm Berry Pies to take with you below. Descent mode is here that negates the survival aspect which basically turns it totally into an ARPG without the need to eat/survival. There is Standard mode with your usual difficulties, each scaling up for higher character levels, just like Diablo 1/2. When you start standard mode you choose which class you want, then you customize your toon. Each class has specific ancient items you can obtain by chance and by quests, so like Diablo 1 you can find other class skills, but they won’t be nearly as powerful as if you’d found them with the class they belong to (they can’t be ranked up by another class). But another class’s skill can be a build changer for your current toon. There are two skill trees, one for your build like vitality, etc., and one for survival which you can put points into longer rot times for your harvest and different food recipes. Once you have some good gear the game has a funny way of killing you if you're not paying attention, then you're required a strategical corpse run, or many runs depending on the situation you got yourself in. There's also a hardcore mode. There are runewords and common items all the way up to Unique. You can also find some insane armors outside of crafting the tiered-metal armors. You can reroll the world below the surface layer for higher difficulty farming. Close calls with death are extremely satisfying. At first the game seems kinda meh, but once you keep going deeper the game simply gets amazing. This is very much a Diablo content over GFXs type of game. The game is worth every penny, really, especially if you like Diablo 1 or 2.

Speaking to Defcon fans

I don't currently have much time to write an in-depth review of the game so I'm speaking directly to fans of Defcon with an understanding of the concept. If you enjoyed Defcon buy this instantly. They've hit a genius stride of strategy where it's not too complex and not too simple. It's perfectly in between. You'll be faced with decisions like should you control the ocean around your coasts or sacrifice some research time (time is basically your money and there's a slider to control if you want to focus on research or production or both) to go on the offensive. You can play a game in about two hours and I've not yet played MP but have watched a couple games and it looks fun. The AI puts up a good challenge and there's 3 levels of difficulty. Also the game is open for mod creation, and the devs plan on adding more to the game. If you liked Defcon this is a no brainier. I've not encountered any bugs so far.
