Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri™ Planetary Pack

Retro as hell and unbelieveably good

This is such a good game. DAMN THIS IS A GOOD GAME. This seriously has so many good turn-based strategy features to it you will be enjoying it non-stop for weeks to months without repeating anything you don't want to. You get to chose how much you automate and how much you micromanage. The scripts can break down and do some funky stuff, but largely makes your empire feel streamlined. Diplomacy is worthless, as usual for this genre. It's also kinda a weird story, what with 90's sci-fi mixed with some crazy transhumanist stuff. Still, so very playable all these years later. Get it now.

Endless Sky

It's free.

Remember Flash Trek? It's basically that. Absurd grind, long missions, unbalanced play and a terrible autopilot. I gave up before I got the ship I wanted. The quest chaining is really bad. Still, the heart of a decent game is in there. Worth a try for anyone interested in the combination of flight/space combat/management/light RPG.

STAR WARS™ Knights of the Old Republic™ II: The Sith Lords™

What a load

This expansion to KotoR (hardly a sequel) allows you to look up or down slightly. The story is complete nonsense and not all worth reading. Many of the dialogues and cutscenes will fail to load properly anyway. The stiff and painful to play combat is absurd, like the original. You'll need to thoroughly read the Strategy Wiki and download a save editor before starting. The developers gave up half way through, you might too.

STAR WARS™: Knights of the Old Republic

A huge let-down

This is a real tragedy. You get to play as a handicapped who can't look up or down and struggles to keep up with side characters. It's really disappointing how it ruins the squad shooter/slasher with an attempt at turn-based dice combat. Parts of it are fun, there's plenty to explore, but this can only be recommended for the hardest of Star Wars fans who like excessively niche games. You need to read some min/max guides and the cheat guides before starting the game.

Rebel Galaxy

Good space trucking for the price

You drive a space truck around in a decently sized 2D galaxy. You warp for about 2 seconds at a time before pirates or something show up. Shoot space guns at each other Fight, trade and do missions until you've got enough money for a bigger truck or better equipment. The progression/balancing is kinda weird. You're hopelessly outmatched until you buy one piece of equipment that is a higher tier than the bad guys. Then you're way overpowered. Each tier nearly doubles your stats. The story's a bit short, but pretty fun. Good soundtrack.

Star Wars™: Jedi Knight™ - Jedi Academy™

Dirty, smelly, ugly jedi who quicksaves

For 2003, truly a gem. By far the best jedi simulator out there for the price point. Make lots of quicksaves. Sure, they should have had better writers, sure the checkpoint system is absolute garbage, sure the game should give better guidance in missions so I didn't jump off the balcony and spend half my total playtime just looking for the wrong waypoint on Cloud City, sure the cutscenes bug out and don't work... But you get to go from being some guy getting bullied in Jedi school to being a blasterproof space magic laser ninja sent out on exciting and varied dungeon crawls that impact the fate of the galaxy. It's a long and hard game that just feels so good on certain levels. It feels great to completely overwhelm foes with your VERY limited Force powers until you start seeing that the enemy has access to the same powers. Then there's a brutal climb ahead of you. And it is so satisfying to get good and beat the hell out of the bosses.

EVERSPACE™

Bottom of the Bargain Bin

What is Rogue? Only three player ships is a serious red flag. The story is perfectly linear, as far as I could suffer it. It was just a race from one blinding white screen to another. It's on sale for $1 for good reason. Even that is a steep price given the angushing pain still left upon my corneas. This is not a good space sim.

Absolver

Single Player Maze Game

Hopelessly lost in an intraversible maze where the only escape is death, I got little progress in a few hours play. Then the game wouldn't let me load my profile. Seems to be multiplayer online only. While it does look appealing, the combat is clunky and frustrating.
