Hexen II Port report. The GOG version of Hexen 2 ships with nGlide and mouse aiming works fine. The default controls have been altered for modern playing. As an alternative you can also use the fan patch called Hammer of Thyrion found here. http://uhexen2.sourceforge.net/ It will give you widescreen as support as well should you want it. NOTE! This version does not with the expansion Portal of Praevus Hexen II is the most hardcore FPS game ever made for the PC and that is not hyperbole. It runs on the Quake 1 engine so expect similar movement. What makes Hexen 2 special is the integrate level design and the mandatory secrets you have you find. It’s a love it or hate it kind of thing. With no help or hand holding to speaking of the game will throw you into a series of interconnected hub worlds with secret puzzles and objectives that you must figure out. On top of the visceral combat you will have to search every nook and cranny for hidden item and passages in order to progress the game. There’s a bit of point and click logic to some of the puzzles. Combat. The combat in Hexen 2 is like that of Quake 1 but better in my opinion. You chose from 1 of 4 heroes to start the game with. The only thing really separating them is the weapons they can use and small states like health and ammo capacity. Each hero can carry up to 4 highly useful weapons with can be boosted with a power up known that the tomb of power. This is what gives Hexen II’s combat such depth. You pick that character suited to your play style and use their unique weapons. Combine with with enemies that Also possess tricks of their own and you find yourself with simply put, one of the most skill demanding FPS games ever made.
No matter how good a game is, it's all for nothing if it can't work. I tried everything and found that there are plenty of other people who have experienced this. This game is very prone to crashing to the desktop. It's not known what the cause is, it just seems to happen whenever it wants. I really wanted to play this game but with the constant CTD (crash to desktop) I just couldn't play it. Utterly broken.
This is actually a really impressive port. Unlike MK1, MK2 & MK3 this is worth getting over trying to get the arcade version to work on MAME. The game is extremely fast and snappy. The load times are so short they're over before you even have time to finish reading the "Loading" on the screen. As for the game itself I've warmed up to it over the years. I think it's fair to say that MK4 is the fastest game in the series. MK9 actually feels kind of slow compared to it. Despite the 3D graphics this is still a 2D fighter at heart. You can press a button to move toward the screen or futherfrom it. Likewise there are move that can bounce you around the arena as well. Mostly you'll be sticking to a 2D plane in a 3D environment. There are weapons in the game but it's just a gimmick. You can take out a weapon anytime during a match but if you are hit once you'll lose it and go back to fists. This goes does suffer a little bit of control compatibility, it will work with a xinput controller but you'll have to work out a way to make the game use a d-pad instead of a analog stick. THIS IS NOT THE KIND OF GAME YOU WANT TO PLAY WITH AN ANALOG STICK. So get that d-pad up and running. Mortal Kombat 4 isn't as dark or serious as other games in the franchise but it sure is a lot of fun. One of those games that has gotten better with age in my opinion and this port is very good indeed.
There’s no denying that 30 USD is a steep price but considering what you get and what the other reviews have been saying; I think I should shed some light one this. This is no quick and dirty port from some half baked emulator. This is a highly polished product with a lot of love and care put into it. What you get is both Aladdin and Lion King. For The Lion King you get both the SNES and Genesis versions as well as game Gameboy color and original Gameboy version. Since this version of Aladdin was never released for the SNES what you get instead on the Final Cut version alongside the Genesis version and both Gamboy versions as well. But What you also get is a metric tone of features such as; making of videos, and art galleries. But most of all, you get gameplay features that make playing these games more fun then they've ever been. You have a Sands of Time style rewind mechanic that lets you undo mistakes instead of having to quick save all the time. You can also play it as intended if you're up for the challenge. Also you can watch a play through of the game and interrupt it at any time to take over. From the options menu you have things like level select and invincibility cheat should you want to use them. Though these games are old this is the upmost premium way to present them. If the asking price is a little too high maybe wait for sale.
This is another one of those "look at me I'm old school" games that forgets what old school design truly is. The way the gameplay works is that you play though levels killing monsters to unlock points which you spend on improving your weapons and stats from the “workshop” a non-combat level you return to at the end of each run. If that sounds familiar it’s because it’s same type of mechanic used in a lot of rouge-like games. Old school games were all about the skill and timing which goes completely out the window once you introduce RGP-like upgrades into the mix. You can’t save mid level either. Instead the game uses a lives system and once you run out that’s all your progress gone. Unless of course you’re playing on the easiest difficulty, or backup the games registry files. (hint hint) 90s fps games had quick save for a reason. Another problem with the game is the lighting system. The graphics are fine expect for the fact that you can barely see anything. Turning the in games brightness to max helps a little but makes everything look ugly and not in retro 90s kind of way. I say you’re better off getting a genuine game from the 90s then this reimagining. It’s a shame too because the combat is really good and none of the problems I've listed are beyond fixing with a few patches. I think this game should do away with these modern FPS quirks and just embrace old-school design 100% and run & gun with it.
I bought Indiana Jones® and the Infernal Machine because I thought it was going to be Emperor's Tomb. Unfortunately I couldn't get past the controls. If this doesn't bother you I'm sure you'll enjoy the game otherwise know what you're getting into. Tank controls or manual turning is when you have to turn left or right before you can move in that direction. Kind of like controlling a tank, hence the name. Very few if any games use this control scheme today and for good reason.
I suspect that the only reason GOG obtained this game was to complete the whole trilogy. This isn’t even it’s so bad it’s good. It’s just bad and beyond the scope of redemption. The only nice thing I have to say about this game is that the reloading animation is nice. That’s about the only thing this game got right. The gunplay is awful and the AI (if you can even call it that) is much worse. AI is one of those things you don’t really think about until you play a game like this and notice how broken it is. Just lookup some gameplay footage on youtube or some thing because this isn’t worth the title space on yourself let alone on your hard drive.
Soldier of Fortune II Double Helix is an ultra violent version of Goldeneye for the PC with better AI. Bare in mind that while this is a squeal to the first with the same characters and setting it has almost nothing in common from a gamely prospective. While the first one was a fast paced run, gun and shooting everything in sight kind of game. The sequel is a tactical shooter with more objective style gameplay and tactical maneuvering. Handling recoil is one of the key components of this game. Most of the time you can set your gun to fire full auto semi-auto and burst. This is nothing new but what is different is that there’s no ironsight. This means that you have to steady your corsair manually and be extremely mindful, of what your trigger finger is doing. But that’s half the fun. It’s a very different experience from the first one but a good one nonetheless. While there are some aspect of this game that hasn’t aged well such as animation bugs and physics collision, this should hold you back from what other wise is a very satisfying tactical shooter, with very decent AI to boot.
Dragon's layer games are essentially cartoons that you push buttons to watch. The whole game is a quick time event. From the point where the cartoon starts your job is to press buttons that correspond with the onscreen prompts. The longer you keep this going the more the movie will play without interruption. If you make a mistake you'll see a death animation typically of your character getting eaten or something and then you start from the last checkpoint. Checkpoints are plentiful but this is based on an arcade game so it's quite difficult. In short, it's a movie you push button to watch and isn't for everyone. Just know what you're getting into when you buy this.
Simply one of the best and most immersive horror games I’ve ever played. This is a horror games inspired HP Lovecraft and it’s most decently crafted with love (pun intended) Gameplay: The gameplay at first, is made up of stealth and puzzles followed by action and puzzles. This game has an arch to it. So it starts off with you sneaking and hiding until it eventually allows you to fight back and soon after you’ll be fighting with squads. So you start off as weak but slow get stronger as you progress. It’s a very slow pace so it takes a while but it suits the game. Even at the action moments, it still is haunting and intense. Technical: This game was flat out broken with game breaking bugs according at selected moments preventing you from being able to finish it. I can say most of these have been fixed though if you want to play in widescreen you’ll still have to download a fix for that.
