I don't know why it worked, but here's how I managed to changed my username when setting up a new game. 1) Open 'New Game' in the main menu 2) Under 'Competitors' hover over the AI name and it will allow you to edit it 3) Backspace and change the name however you want and click 'Enter', this should change your username I've got this working only by playing offline againts bots with no mods, do try out this method if it'll work for your game.
