If you have a potato with Intel HD Graphics, know that there is a source port called Doom 64 EX+ (also known as Doom64EX-Plus), and it has support for OpenGL 2.1, so this will be the best option for you at the moment to run DOOM 64. =) Unfortunately, if you don't know, the Nightdive Studios version uses Direct3D 11, OpenGL 3.2 and Vulkan, renderers that don't work on potatoes, especially anything below Intel HD Graphics 4000. Therefore, the 5 stars are for id Software's DOOM 64 game, and not for Nightdive's port (I give 1 star for this one) which, instead of including people, pushes them away! Hey, Nightdive, real preservation is making software work on all possible hardware/OS, not just a few! I hope I helped you, who were disappointed to see DOOM 64 not working on your potato with Windows 7 64-bit. ;)
If you're on a gamepad, you'll be fine; however, if you intend to play with a keyboard... 1 - There is no support for Mouse; 2 - There is no way to remap the keyboard controls (same for the gamepad). So on the keyboard, you'll be stuck with these controls: - "Arrows" for movement; - "Space bar" to shoot/punch - "B" locks the aim; - "C" for special attack; - "P" pauses the game; - "Esc" completely closes the game (WTF!). Seriously, that's it. And I wanted to know who the "smart" person was who chose these keys! Probably a mutant from another planet who has never played a PC game in his life. In short, the game is good, but the strange controls ruin it from the beginning.
An excellent game about medieval China. It stands out for its historical context and beautiful animation of magic. You can choose between a guy with a sword, a tall girl with a saber or a big guy with an axe. The girl is fast and has the longest weapon, the tall man is the strongest and slowest, and the man with the sword is the most balanced. To complete the whole game, you must set the Tough Guy or Hero mode in the menu (the default mode is Easy). You can also set more lives in the same menu. Running and rush attacks are available. A worthy competitor to the Golden Axe series. Also known as Beneath the Clouds. The original title is Shui Hu Feng Yun Zhuan.
I played this in 2019 and at the time it was good, I think I had a 40K itch and so I had fun. I decided to play it again, now without the "itch", and what I saw was a game that looks more like a beta version of something that could be bigger! Maybe due to the lack of money to develop better assets, or the developers were inexperienced, or the project delivery time was too short... I don't know what exactly happened. The point here is not technical problems, as I didn't have any on Windows 7 64-bit. I'm also not upset about the lack of music, I understand the lack of it. The main problem, in short, is that this game has too many harsh things (just like the beta version of any game), that is, bad animations, bad ambient and enemy sounds, I mean, the sounds are of very low quality, muffled. And the scenarios are ugly, poorly designed and not fun to play. Anyway, play this when you have a willing for anything 40K, stay away if you're looking for a good FPS experience. In fact, speaking of experience, this game doesn't manage to pass any, nothing memorable. I would venture to say that the only thing that saves this game are the CGIs, which are very good and have a lot of action going on.
If you intend to play the vanilla version, use the dhewm3 source port, it will guarantee a better experience and it is easy to add mods. Now some points about the gameplay: - Everything is dark, a darkness that tires the eyes (this was resolved in the BFG version); - The scenarios are the same, the types of enemies don't vary much, and the combat is rubbish, with the enemies always very close and surrounding, and there is nowhere to run to machine gun them, as some sessions are too tight, there are also the famous "jump scares", and some are extreme trollers; - There are lockers that need codes to be opened, and these codes are in email messages and audio logs, so get ready to read and listen a lot; boring or not? Doors also require codes, but there are few of them; - I got to the hell part and then gave up, hell sucks, boring and tiring, and the "Soul Cube" is complete shit. I applaud those who finished the base game and expansions! Overcoming boredom in this game is the biggest challenge, and I failed at it, I confess; - Anyway, I'm sure you'll like it initially, but after a while the boredom will be killing you, believe me. There are also some evil lines and laughs in the air, at first they are cool, but when you get to hell you will want to shoot the guy with the evil laugh! For they become tiring; - In short, DOOM 3 is not a fun game, it does not have a smooth gameplay rhythm and everything will get tiring, sooner or later. Hope this helps! =)
Positive points: - Interesting story; - The graphics of the scenarios are quite pleasant; - For those from Brazil, the GOG version has a complete translation into PT-BR (just make sure to select it in the external configurator). Negative points: - The combat is not satisfactory, there isn't that brutal sound and that most brutal death animation, it feels like you're hitting enemies with a cardboard sword (by playing you will understand); - For some reason the GOG offline installer took almost 1 hour to install the game, and it also took a while to uninstall (maybe this is a irrelevant for most people); - There is a bug with the character's statistics, instead of numbers appearing, letters appear, making everything difficult to understand (this was mentioned in other reviews); - The screen aspect ratio is stuck at 4:3 and the available resolution for most will be 1024x768. Well, I could list more negative points, but I just focused on the main ones, the ones you will see at the beginning. Despite my 1 star rating, I encourage you to play and draw your own conclusions. ;)
More to the point, mouse dead zones are massive! There are some solutions, but none of them fix the problem 100%. Be warned that this mouse problem breaks all the fun. And I'm surprised that no one (as far as I've seen) has reported this, hehe, could it be that nostalgia is so much that it blinded these people?! Well, another minor error is in the FOV which cuts the weapon model by more than half, there are also some solutions online but they are all related to modifying the ".exe", and you know, changing this in the GOG version may break other compatibility related things. Anyway, the game is good, and if had a mouse with the sensitivity working properly, the fun would certainly be guaranteed. I haven't tested the expansion, but keep in mind that it may suffer from the same issues.
This is full of softlocks! Be warned! It does not work properly even using the latest version of nGlide. Using patches for D3D will do nothing and you will have even more problems. Simply avoid this piece of shit! Honestly? It's a shame, because the game is very good, but the technical problems completely ruin the experience.
You won't get lost on the maps because everything flows organically, like DOOM (1993) and even better. You can drink to increase your health and if you drink too much you will get drunk, hehe. XD Then use the same bottle to set the communist bums on fire. Some things remind us of Quake (classic): Color palette and some enemies, and finally, nothing else reminds us of Quake, as HROT follows its own path in many things. Honestly? It is a mistake to compare it with Dusk, as Dusk makes several mistakes when trying to copy Quake, and it is far from being an optimized game, due to the fact that it uses the Unity engine. HROT runs on any potato and uses an engine created by the developer himself in the Pascal language. Anyway, there are three chapters with lots of action and a great arsenal of weapons, there's even a dog to help you in one of the chapters. XD Buy HROT and avoid Dusk!
