This game is from 1987 so is ancient in terms of age these days but honestly to me it was amazing game and defiantly worth the buy and play. Yes it is hard and yes it is old but honestly nothing wrong with how this game looks or plays given its age and timeframe, this holds up well I felt given this. Enjoyed it very much but you defiantly will want a guide at some point as no hand holding with these old games. Story line was average but gameplay was great.
I have not ever played this game before and was quite happy with it but I found it even as a retro gamer a little too old in way it plays, would of been amazing at its time but not much now. I would only buy it if your a hardcore lover of this game and only if it is on special. I gave it 3 stars as don't hate it but didn't love it either.
FUN 10/10 – honestly no idea of what I was going in for with this game, never played it growing up and is from 1994 and a point n click game. But so glad I looked all past that and opened my mind up to playing it as it turned out to be a great game and well worth the time. SOUND 7/10 – sound was fine for a DOS game even if emulated, no issues there, was actually surprised how well they did some sounds. STORY 10/10 – highly rated by me especially being an Aussie, I could handle the Aussie references and understood them but for anyone not in Aussie land, it is understandable if you scratch your head at what the heck they on about but story defiantly cut the mustard overall and I was very satisfied once I finished game with story. GRAPHICS 2/10 – DOS game so limited capabilities naturally, however more than capable of pulling it off especially given it’s age, so 2 yes only due to this but in no way disappointed with it. DIFFICULTY 8/10 – For me was hard but got the hang of it then was okay, traditionally not a big click n point gamer, so had to adjust then was able to learn okay, challenging but got you to think which was great to be honest, so enjoyed the challenge to challenge yourself to learn. BUGS For me, I didn’t encounter any during my play through. LENGTH OF GAME Long enough for me to feel satisfied, didn’t time my play through though so exactly not sure, long enough for a DOS game though. 21:9 ULTRA WIDE SCREEN CAPABLE No, clearly not OUTCOME Very satisfied with the purchase of this game and loved playing it, story was great and fulfilling and very happy to have achieved learning and completing this game. Did I have fun? Sure did.
FUN 8/10 – not 10 due to the annoying inter levels where you have to defend city walls. These levels should of been left out of the game, annoying and time waster. SOUND 4/10 – sound has not aged well and probably not that great upon release. WEAPONS 7/10 – no real issues here, had fun with majority of weapons, good mix but you quickly work out which ones to use regularly and jetpack lots of fun for when you got to use it. STORY 10/10 – For me the story was great and funny and felt fulfilled from start to finish, good old game humour you just don’t get in today’s games, was late 90’s and early to mid 00’s games had good humour. GRAPHICS 4/10 – graphics has defiantly not stood up to aging but you should never base a game on graphics, it is the core of the gameplay that is the real value, sure graphics are nice of course but graphics alone don’t make a great game and too many gamers get caught up on this one aspect. DIFFICULTY 8/10 – for me was hard but was able to learn from mistakes and then complete game. As early 00’s games coming out of 90’s you can’t choose any difficulty. BUGS For me, I didn’t encounter any, not to say that none don’t exist, just got none during my play through. LENGTH OF GAME Felt very long to me, luckily story was good that it kept me going from that point of view, didn’t record my time it took for my paythrough but defiantly long enough I felt, money's worth. OUTCOME Very satisfied with the purchase of this game and other than old graphics but hey time frame was 2003 so you know. Story was fulfilling, guns satisfying, money’s worth with length of game, challenging game but able to learn and overcome. Did I have fun, sure did. With exception of the wall side missions or felt like side missions to me as they felt so out of place to the main game I class them side missions, not a fan of them and felt out of place for the game.
This would of been fun at the time it came out if it was popular possibly but doubt it very much given unreal tournament and quake series around the same time so given this I would of say this would of been bad back then and is terrible now. Clearly no multiplayer given age but it has aged extremely bad and most importantly as graphics clearly are not everything especially playing retro games its the gameplay that was just like MEH and what the.. I was instantly bored and honestly no idea what the hell was going on as no explenation at all, it appears to be a round robbin fps tournament but is just so bad it just shouldn't even be sold as it just doesn't cut the standard of gog games. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY EVEN IF ON SPECIAL AND GOG REMOVE IT FROM GOG
If you must know why I rate this game terrible then find my reivew for the first etherlords game, I simply can not bother retyping it here for etherlords 2 as only thing etherlords 2 has going for it is the jump in graphics from 2001 game to this one in 2004 is expected to look better. That is where it stops, purely as the very first mission I could see the underlining issues of the first one is still inbuilt to the 2nd one, honestly think the 1st one was way better from both graphics and especially the map, the map in the new one is just pure terrible and less interesting way less. Again purely unbalanced AI, just simply not wasting my time on it, learnt that lesson from really giving the 1st game a decent try. Pure rubbish.
I really wanted to keep playing this game and I am a retro gamer but when you get 2nd mission in and barely beat the what I really call the 1st mission of the campaign as the 1st is really a horrific what I can only thin is a non guided tutorial (joke) there is no tutorial so you are left wondering around with no clue on anything let alone even the gui. Great concept of a game and beside all of its flaws I pushed on and got to the 3rd mission really the 2nd mission and was able to beat one of the 2 AI's but the last Ai was so much more experienced I put a decent fight up but gut crushed time over time, the Ai is extremely overbalanced and straight out cheating brutally, even with the best built deck to combat the AI's I still found it impossible and extremely brutal and unfair keeping in mind I play retro games all on hard and am fine with them as they are developed evenly and designed for fun. This games developed in such a way that it will kill your fun, if you don't play for fun then why even play, who wants to play to get angry, confused to how the game is even designed no tutorial even for 2001 is a crime and then extreme unbalanced unfair gameplay is just INSANE again Hard is okay but extreme unbalancing is just unforgiveable. I really really tried with this game and gave it way more hours than it deserved as again loved the concept but after experiencing the above this game game me more displeasure than pleasure so only gets 1 star. If you idea of fun is to play a game and have the best of everything and still get your ass whooped and have you sitting in your chair constantly saying wtf this game is rediculous then go ahead and buy this game your insanity awaits
was very hesitant about even playing this let along installing it, but once I gave it a go and opened my mind to trying it, I instantly loved it, developer put a lot of care into this game and done a great job for first game developed. YOU HAVE TO CHANGE THE CONTROLS THOUGH via setup.exe in the actual games folder, EASY TO DO, once done then the game is PLAYABLE as for me I was like what the hell I can't choose anything LOL DO NOT EXPECT GROUND BREAKING GRAPHICS OR any advanced controls, you will be disappointed BUT IF YOU want to play a INDIE game that has GREAT story and Great easy controls once changed then this game is worth playing. IF YOU HAVE NEVER PLAYED a game where you have to actually thing unlike todays games then STAY CLEAR or you will struggle as there is no TUTORIAL, you have to play and learn as dev made game off his experience of classic platforms games he and no doubt I and most other gamers also enjoyed playing which were brutal hard but rewarding to master. LOVE IT, great INDIE game
my experience only, and never played game before, this game is 2001 so I defiantly don't base games on graphics only but also other factors per below, STRESS I am not a tank commander so my own experience, anyone willing or able to get a much better understanding them me no doubt will love this game but for the average gamer like me its a big no don't waste your time. Graphics - yes old game but graphics are SEVERELY outdated as in just have not aged well at all, can live with this if game play and controls are good etc. Gameplay - seemed okay, no issues Map - had no idea if one even existed while in mission as I couldn't find one. Controls - thought just go with default you know so I don't mess them up, TERRIBLE controls, so bad were they that it was the reason I couldn't do first mission yep controls that bad. Recommendation - for avg gamer stay away from this one, BUT if you unlike me can handle crippling graphics that combine with bad insane controls or just are a major tank enthusiast than no doubt you will love this game, so bad for me but could be great for someone better than I am at it.
