There are games that I sometimes purchase at GOG that make me regret *NOT* buying it at full price -- during one of GOG's many sales. Games like "Dead Cells", "Carrion", "Cryptark", "Crying Suns", "Undertale", "Iconoclasts", "Children of Morta" -- just to name a few. Just fantastic games that I am very happy to have in my collection. Games that I really want others to play and enjoy. "Worldless" is one of those games. This game is just fantastic. From its simple and intuitive map design, its beautiful art design and soundtrack and culminating with its fun and challenging combat. And the combat is what really shines here. It is fun and challenging but not frustrating. Probably my favorite game that I purchased this year so far. Highly recommended
This has been one of the best video game narrative experiences that I have had this year -- along with "Demonicon" And like that game, you will only stay for the story because the gameplay is lacking. Not horrible, but the game did bug out up on me -- once or twice. The controls (such as they are) just refused to respond and I had to restart the game. And they are only really just QTEs and pixel hunting. Not riveting gameplay to be honest However, the narrative is tense and riveting. I am glad that I stuck through it because the story did not disappoint! I was so into this story and I love the character of John Blacksad. I read the first story from the comics before I started this game and I so glad that I did since there were some references to that comic. So I had a deeper insight into Blacksad and it drew me more into the story. It is not necessary to do that but I am glad that I did. I hope to see another game with this character because I enjoyed every minute of this game's story . Highly recommended. In the meanwhile, I think I will read more of the Blacksad comics!
I am loving every minute of this game. This is the game "Low Magic Age" wants to be. (And "Low Magic Age" is not a bad game, but it is not this!) But more than that, I am a BIG fan of the old-school Choose Your Adventure books, the Lone Wolf Books, the AD&D game novels (One of them was a prequel of the twins Raistlin and Cameron Majere.). Now while I never read/played these books, they seem to be a treat based on this game alone. It only makes sense that these books become an all-inclusive RPG since these books (and all I named above) are just predecessors to modern CRPGs in general. And I really do like the presentation, the soundtrack and the atmosphere of this game. I am playing a Mage right now and I am loving how the different mini-quests feed into each other. It really rewards you for exploration and experimentation. The RNG is not savage (at least not on "Adventurer" mode) and it is just a good game to chill with. Very impressed and I hope that the developers expand on it -- I would gladly pay for some expansion DLC so long the price is right. As stated earlier in another review, it is just a wonderful love letter to old school game books!
I REALLY like narrative-driven games! And I really like detective stories! However, I cannot stand (except for a very few) point & click adventure games. I have tried so many times to get into some point and click adventure game and I usually drop them. And it is sad too because most point & click adventure games seem to have some great storylines, but I just get frustrated with "point & click adventure game" logic. So I absolutely adore "Lucana" because it is NOT a point & click adventure game. It is a REAL detective story that more than a couple of times tripped me up. You have to be a real detective here and the game makes that actually fun! You have to look for clues very thoroughly -- and it a chore. You have to review and re-review the evidence that you have to make the correct deductions. But again this does not feel like a chore. And the story! WOW!!! I will try not to say much in fear of spoiling it, but it is a roller-coaster ride!! There were SO many times I felt the intensity and weight of my choices I was so close to **completely** solving the case -- but close only counts "in horseshoes and hand grenades". In any case, I was very satisfied with the results of my first playthrough. But this one definitely begs for a second playthrough. The story knows how to hit in the feels but not just with the main characters. I found myself having a great amount of empathy with a quite a few side characters. I actually cared about them and predicaments. They story also does just the right amount of monologuing; while at the same time, it knows how to pull off "show, don't tell" exquisitely. The writers really deserve kudos for creating a very well-paced branching storyline. Final verdict: This game is a delight! A thoroughly entertaining experience and definitely worth a look. This is one that will be staying on my hard drive and downloaded on my external drive for posterity!
I brought this game on a whim -- as I do with most of my purchases on GOG. And I am floored about how much fun this game is!!! A little background about me: I have been gaming since the late 70's (Yes, I remember PONG). I have over 300 games between Steam and GOG since moving from console to PC gaming exclusively (For the record, most of my collection is here on GOG since I prefer their DRM-free policy. I like owning my games. Thank you.). I am a self-taught programmer of over 22 years and I am well versed in C/C++ C#, Java and Visual Basic. And I should be teaching myself Python right now. But instead, I am up late having a blast playing EXA Punks! Lastly, I am a also professional software developer mentor/tutor. And I have to say this is an excellent game for ANYONE who is interested in learnng about the basics of computer programming. Computer programing is not math by the way -- it is linear thinking. Working out each step, one after the other, to get the computer to do what one wants the comptuer to do. As a game, EXA Punks completely nails that puzzle aspect of the computer programming -- the problem of getting the computer to do EXACTLY what you want it to do. It also really nails the principle of RTFM (that is, READ THE F----- MANUAL) in order to solve some of the earlier levels. Now I know that that this game will not be to everyone's taste. But in my opinion this game is so much fun and one of the best gaming purchases that I have made this the entire year! An easy 5 stars (and yes, I admit it! I am very biased) And again, one could do worse if one wishes to learn how to code than play EXA Punks. (like go to college - sheesh! Just my opinion, though) This is just a great game.
I agree with "AYC8I0IaHnPhDdeY". This is the best game that I have played in 2020. And I was mid "Amid Evil" (Another fantastic game) when I was watching a "Let's Play" on YouTube (Mathas on YouTube). But it looked like so much fun so I bought it immediately -- and it does NOT disappoint!! I have been gaming since at least 1976 or 1977. Definitely hit my stride in the 80's. And this game is a very special game. And I am sorry, this game is only 112MB??? I understand why (I am a professional programmer), but seriously this 112MB game has : 1. Gameplay which extremely fluid and responsive (Full disclosure: I am playing with a controller) 2. Remarkable sprite graphics. 3. Pretty good atmospheric sound effects and music. Nothing earthshattering but good. Really it is like one of the old greats in size but plays like a very smooth and modern game! Now I did run into a bug in which the game did not really autosave my progress after a couple of hours but I was having so much fun that I did not even care (basically it looked like it could not sync up with GOG.com. But it really wasn't a problem: after 1.5 hours, I was right back where I left off at!) And the backtracking is not really that odious in my opinion. I am glad that there is no map or any real handholding other than the beginning instructions. You can step right into it and start causing mayhem! This game is just awesome and I am having a blast playing it! Definitely my Game of the Year!!
I am an old-school gamer. I remember "PONG", alright. I owned an Atari 2600 as a kid. I have played countless number of games - on various different platforms. And there have been some great ones. I won't bore you on naming all of the different games that have utterly floored me. I will just say that "Iconoclasts" with its fantastic story (which I haven't even completed yet), its engaging and interesting characters, its colorful sprite-based graphics (which is a breath of fresh air because this beautifully-told story can get very DARK at times!), its killer soundtrack and its FUN, FUN **FUN**gameplay... Well, you can probably guess this game has completely FLOORED me! And really, I do mean FUN! I am trying to remember when I've had this much fun playing a video game. The puzzles, platforming, the boss fights...OMG, the boss fights! Wow! They are so much FUN! Challenging, absolutely! But not frustrating or tedious, the boss fights make make you think and they are fair! You mess up - well, its because you messed up. You didn't think something through or you didnt observe when something changed. That simple. And by the way, Robin is just adorable! All of the characters are great, but spunky Robin - so brave and determined - just wow! Yes, she's the player's avatar; and yes, she's a silent protagonist. But she has her own personality distinct from the player's which is masterfully portrayed by the very well-written story and her sprite-animations. In fact, all of the characters' animations are well done. They really convey what the characters are thinking and feeling. I can gush for hours about this very, very special game. But I really want to get back to it and finish it. And probably replay it as soon as I'm done! That said, this game is very much worth any real gamers time. It's one the best games I've played in a long time! It's one of those games that makes me happy that I'm a gamer!
This is a very, very rich game. I usually do not like RTS games (with the exception of Homeworld and Dawn of War) in the sense that they keep me as enthralled as this one. But this game is freaking amazing. I can't remember being enthralled this much in a game like this. Not even the original Civilization. This game has had gotten me thinking heavily about my next move against the AI even when I am not playing it. RTS and 4X fans really need to treat themselves to this game. I got it on sale and I have to say that I think that this is one of my best purchases at GOG.com. I don't think that I will ever get tired of this game. I just need to find some people to play online and I will be in seventh heaven!
