I used to love playing the close combat game back when they came out, but they really have not aged well. After I played Steel Division 2, which follows the same format, but is better in just about every imaginable way, I just can't play this game anymore. So unless you never had the chance to play these game back in the day, and are feeling nostalgic, go to steam and play Steel Division 2,
I am slightly disappointed by the game. I have outlined below my dislikes for the game. There are still a lot of bugs with this GOG version, such as not being able to change your weapon load out while in port for a particular weapon TLAM. Not getting credit for sinking ships. Damage occurring to your sub out of no where. Pretty dumb for the designers to put the white lettering on the world map the same color, which makes it hard to read. Not given enough time to get to your mission area. It would have been nice to slow down the speed of the game. You can increase it, but not slow it. Can't zoom in close enough on the tactical map, which would help in evading torpedoes. Only 2 decoys given. Since this is a modern sub and not WW2 era subs, the periscope is worthless The sub finds contacts on its own. So I miss using that to locate targets. The enemy locates you way to easy. Even with keeping your distance and silent running they seem to know where you are. They should have provided tools to made it easier to identify to avoid detection. Would have been nice to go on a patrol like in Silent Hunter to sink targets of opportunity, instead of just completing missions. If you are just using a regular keyboard for controlling your sub, then the controls are not intuitive. Too many of the nav keys are to close together, making it easy in the heat of battle to hit the wrong key. Then suddenly your sub is surfacing. If you can get it on sale as I did, and you are a sub fan, it's worth messing around with, just don't expect an amazing experience. I was much happier back in the day with Red Storm Rising. Crazy all these decades later they can't improve, other than visually, on that experience.
I am so glad I played the free demo before deciding to purchase. I am not a fan of the art or graphical style of the game. It's wierd but I get very little satisfaction playing this game. I have played all the commandos games and loved them. I like the WW2 setting and the graphics much better than this. I will not be purchasing this game.
I am not kidding. I have been gaming nearly my whole life (52 years old) and to me personally, this is the crown jewel.. It gives you ultimate control when you want it. It allows you to control the speed of the game which is absolutely vital. I like to play in slow-mo most of the time and do not like fast paced games. What makes this one the best Men of War is the additon of the medic. Bringing back to life your dead soldiers is what is lacking in the other Men of War games. The only negative thing I can say is that there is not a whole lot of variety in the missions and can get alittle repetitive..
I have the original plus the expansion and have played it for years off and on. It is one of my most beloved games of all time. Just about perfect. Can't think of any flaws to this game. Love Love Love it. If you have never played it you are missing out. It has aged extremely well! Get it today.
