Loria Demo

Needs fix, otherwise good Warcraft clone

I've just finished the demo. The good: It's straight up Warcraft 2 in HD with the gameplay additions from Warcraft 3 like heroes that can level up, be revived, equip armor, use items and special passive and active skills. Controls are the same, including how to make waypoints etc... so if you already know how to play the old RTS, it's pick and play. For people like me who prefer 2D in HD over 3D it looks better than most recent strategy games imho. The bad: Path finding has problems even in groups of only 8-9, which was already apparent in the first mission since sometimes parts of the group will just not move at all if their paths collide with others in the group unless you give the command a second or third time, that is my main concern and I hope it will be fixed. There's a bug that makes the subtitles all garbled and jittery in the Linux port, but that is most likely a Unity issue. No MP obviously although as I've already said that's not important to me, but it will certainly prevent many sales, which is unfortunate. I know it means a lot of additional work, but it should be worth it in terms of sales. GOG-specific point: I read that the map editor is missing here while it is on Steam, I can't confirm this, but it would be quite bad. I'll probably buy it when the path finding is fixed, I get a confirmation that the map editor is available on GOG and I have money again.

Tesla vs Lovecraft: For Science!

Shameless cash grab, Pay2Win?

All this "DLC" does is unlock already existing content which makes the game easier, like the option to permanently increase health and damage, as well as better weapons and perks. There are no additional levels and if you bought this DLC after finishing the game (like I did), it's a complete waste of money since the devs seem to have just locked away minor content to sell it for 5 extra bucks (with regional pricing). This stuff should be included in the first place.

Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack

Extremely fun, Linux port exists

It is an extremely fun jump and... ooze with low difficulty, good soundtrack and a lot of humour. Unfortunately GOG lacks the Linux port that is available on Steam, so the only chance you had to get the Linux port DRM-free was the Humble Indie Bundle 13, which fortunately I got fast enough. The game itself gets 9/10 points from me, it would have been nice to get some reward for saving all blob friends and getting all the gold medals (which I did), but that's just a minor thing. The low rating I have to give here is strictly for GOG's Windows only package still to this day in late February 2019.

Cryptark

Ruined by low visibility range

The concept is nice and the superficial execution overall good. It's a rogue-like bullet-hell with various modes to get the precious artifacts which permanently unlock new units. There is a massive catch though: The visibility range is so low thanks to a focus on looks, that you get constantly shot by off-screen fire and rammed to death by fast drones in half a second. To mitigate this you have to mostly play by the mini map which shows enemies as mushy red dots, that in turn makes you squint all the time and removes any accuracy and tactical combat, making it become a mostly super fast reflex based game. The difficulty curve is very steep. Performance of the Linux port is not great but okay,in spite of the 2D graphics unlike other contemporary indies it has deadly slowdowns on an Athlon II in the later levels. We're not in the 80s anymore, we have big screens with high resolution, so why not use it or at least reduce the enemy's perception to your own? I'll never come back unless the distance you can see is extended since this is not "Volgarr the Viking" (which has the same problem but is mostly melee), but a game with mostly ranged combat. At least I got it with a good discount and didn't pay full price.

Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap

Would be perfect if...

I finished it on Linux and didn't know the old game, but it's really good and the new art is fantastic. The remade soundtrack uses a lot of actually played instruments as well. It is made on top of the original game and you can switch between old/new graphics and sound anytime with buttons, so it's more or less a remake and remaster at the same time. And you can choose the human form to be female and the title to be displayed as "Wonder Girl", that's kinda neat, although you play in animal forms most of the time anyway. The difficulty is well balanced. I usually play games on easy but managed to finish it on "Normal" without too many issues, just some of the jumping sections in the secret areas were quite hard. I'd give it 5 stars, if controller support wouldn't be completely broken in the current Linux version (if GOG's version is the current one)... My Saitek DirectInput pad and the Logitech F310 in DInput mode aren't recognized at all and when I set the F310 to XInput mode, it is shown in the menu but I cannot map it and no input works although I have xboxdrv installed. At least there's QJoyPad to workaround this issue since you really want to play that game with a pad.
