Peaks of Yore

Peak performance

I bought a few games completely blind this week on a complete whim due to having time off, plus many gigs of ISP download left. My version of completely blind = no reviews, 'how bad can it be' attitude, 'give it a chance', trailers and gameplay text only, no googling, no forum wars. This game is fantastic - totally impressed! Core gameplay loop involves attempting to climb mountains. Skills are improved as you try different mountains. Items gained. Insights gained from NPC's & environment. Its truly simple concept. I'm 10 mountains in so can't comment on the end game, but right now totally loving the progression. Pros: - progression of difficulty is smooth and roughly matches the improvement of skill and equipment. - I am a casual climber and this is realistic enough not to be a complete turn off. - The sounds + birds are soothing. Generally not a fan of artificial environments compared to the real thing, but they found something that worked. - fluid mechanics - sometimes you gamble and succeed on a jump and it feels fantastic. - sometimes you gamble on a jump and fail... and you realize its completely your fault. - Meeting the occasional NPC and finding new treasures to accumulate - Scenery Cons: - Seagulls can go die in a fire (not really, just I want to throw a brick at them). - be warned - the pause button isn't a real pause - you are mostly safe, but in the menu screen you can still move and fall if you press the wrong button on accident. - You can't be the goat :) If I keep enjoying it, I will purchase the DLC and update.

Dustborn

Took a chance - Regretted it.

"Dustborn is a single-player, story-driven action-adventure game about hope, love, friendships, robots…and the power of words." Combine this with the 50% discount and ISP download capacity to burn before Jan 1st and I took a chance. Went in blind expecting some of that sentence above to be true and I often take the stand "how bad can it be?" when purchasing unknowns. Sadly 'single player' is the only part of that statement that makes sense. Clunky combat, irrelevant choices (if they can even be called choices), writing so poor I'm not convinced its not generated by an early AI bot. The concept of 'words as weapons' also intrigued me... for about 10 minutes of gameplay before I realized its deep as a puddle and irrelevant. Even Guybrush Threepwood wouldn't have trouble parrying these linquistic diatribes. Not worth it.

1000xRESIST

Good atmosphere - in progress review

Still reviewing and finished chapter 1. - Thrown right into the story with a nice little mystery. - Interesting premise & heavy on story telling - Game recommends controller but works fine w/ KB+M - Missing a word to describe the atmosphere but maybe it'll come to me. Its like a blend of the nostalgia historical story feeling that movies attempt with sepia colors (this isn't colored sepia btw) combined with the slightly sorrowful overtones that come with a futuristic sci-fi. - Taking a short break as I can't see another character in a mask at the moment for my own sanity. I'll return and finish more chapters later.

Endling - Extinction is Forever

3 hour experience - not worth it

Definitely not going to be the most helpful review here but thats ok. The line that sold me was "Spend the day resting in an improvised shelter and plan your next movement carefully" I expected something similar to Shelter, Stray, or even Seasons after Fall. Something with an iota of choice and consequence or diverging paths. I expected too much. Its a 90% linear 'story' with virtually no choice/consequence except an arbitrary time limit causing a binary 'decision fork' that brings you to the next linear and similar screen. Hate to say it, but this feels like someone spent way too much time reading those fear based, end of the world forum literature instead of going outside to hug an actual tree or volunteering with actual animals to get a sense of reality. The inablity to jump with the fox is an unforgivable sin. I could have given it 2.5 stars with the propoganda plus the liner story for the graphics. The 30 price tag for 3 hours, the inability to jump, the lack of actual decisions. I'm sorry I wasted my $ on this one.

Ether One Redux

Install the NON-Redux version!

Game is a 4/5 for reasons others have said. Install the original NON-REDUX version from the extras section. DON'T install the redux version as it has a ton of issues. I know its been said before but it really is good advice. I don't think you will be sorry.

THE ZACHTRONICS PUZZLE PACK

Review for "Puzzle Pack" not each game

Theres no benefit to buying the 'pack'. One is much better off reading the reviews for each game and purchasing the ones they wish. The puzzle "pack" simply combines the full price of each game as if sold separately. I own all the games with the exception of Last Call BBS & I would rate every single one of them as 4-5 stars (Except Molek-Syntez which I feel they half assed in comparison to Opus and would only get a 3). Unless you just feel like one button purchase is easier, or want to support Zachtronics (they typically make great games), it make more sense to individually buy the games you want separately.

Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew

Absolute Gem

Taking a break from a large name brand RPG waiting for a few patches when I stumbled on this gem. Going in with no pre-conceptions or nostalgia from other games by the same developer (Never played Desparados, or Shadow Tactics). Its a great RTS + Stealth Strategy game! I was blown away with how polished it was at release. Pros - Queued actions for crew - Strategy in combining different crew. The synergies are great fun and when you 'solve' a combat scenario it feels so rewarding! - The writing is better than average - Non-linear mission choice from ship hub - In-game achievements (badges) for crew - Quick Save - You can pet the monkey Neutral - Writing is above average. More than I expected but not stellar. (its possible I'm biased because I've just been immersed in a very text heavy RPG prior to this one) - Most levels can be brute forced. I consider this a neutral as it adds accessibility for those that can't strategize but I never mind tough levels that require several attempts to use s-t-r-a-t-e-g-y - Controls are not bad but they feel slightly .. clunky? Its not a con yet. (KB+M player here) Con - A few bugs - none gamebreaking for me. Feels like the result of having so many options for synergy that testers might have missed a few unique combinations. Or I'm really bad at math. - Played on 2nd level from top difficulty and I havne't seen any npc strategy changes. They seem to prefer a hard rush strategy. This might change as I progress. Honestly not a lot of cons. Its a ridiculously fun RTS game for a decent price with a fun setting.

One Lonely Outpost

Early - Early Access Review

The original kickstarter team changed directions a few times before ultimately being handed off to a completely different development team. While they are open on discord, I'd suggest not reading their kickstarter campaign and then trying to hold the new team to the conceptual roadmap. They've stated a few times they are trying to live into the spirit of the original concept but likely won't be able to deliver the planned experience. Saying that, the experience delivered isn't terrible! It wasn't quite what I expected given the KS but its not half bad. Pros : Stardew in Space - whats not to like? Communicative development team Enough content in the steam demo to form an opinion Approximately 10-15 hours worth of content if you are like me and like to tinker and not beeline for completion. Cons: Some unintuative controls - After 10 games of watering in a straight line, when you get some silly formation it kinda throws you for a loop) Bugs - Plenty Escape key doesn't close windows - Discord dev said they will be fixing shortly $20 is steep for the condition but I'm willing to risk it on the chance they keep making it better. It doesnt' show any signs of abandonment yet. If they stop responding on Discord it'll be a massive red flag but no sign of that.
