There are people that hate turn based combat. There are people that hate first person shooters. There are companies that always try to combine the two thinking they will pull in both demographics but end up pissing everyone off. I played the first battle. When you shoot someone or throw a grenade, things just start moving in real time. Just with the peson that shot? my other characters had great line of sight for a second. Maybe I could have tried to quickly change characters and took a real time shot before the mobs took cover somewhere else. So, kind of has turn based combat, but not really. then you have to make your way through some kind of puzzle map to get to the next objective. I'm out.

This is my kind of game. Turn based combat, character/unit leveling with lots of customisation and random artifacts that can drastically change the game. No long story to get Immersed it, so if that is what you are looking for, this probably ain't it. You should pay attention to it somewhat though. There will be game altering decisions to be made.

If an immersive story that draws you in is required, keep looking. I am the type of person that starts looking for the skip button after two minutes of dialog. This has turn based combat and character building, that checks my boxes. I also care about the game more than the graphics. Battle Brothers and Darkest Dungeon are my most played titles. I hit Ironman, ticked up the difficulty and fell in love with this one. Hopefully that tells you enough about the game to make an informed decision. I also did not play beta so know nothing of bugs I see in reviews.

I waited for a year after the Bugs bugs bugs review and this still crashes in dialog a lot. I am writing this because I want to talk to the witch but if I engage her while she is giving advice on a garlic enema I will get sucked into a dialog I am not part of so I will never be able to exit it. I am still going back to play after though, because this is a pretty good game.

But I must fall into category three, I still enjoy a nearly impossible game. Some good character building/character combinations and the threat of permadeath forces you to play a game of "push your luck" from time to time. I enjoy the game. I picked it up on sale and have received my money's worth. I have received some frustration as well.
Sure you have to go through some mindless city building. Most levels can be won by build a couple distilleries and a pharmacy then launder money for people when you can. The fun is building up the characters. there are some over powered combinations, but I do find the combat to be fun. I did hear horrid things about the game and waited for it to go on sale but worth the sale price.
