Tyranny - Standard Edition

A Short Hike

Undertale

Surprisingly, amazingly immersive

What could I say that hasn't already been said about Undertale ? I hesitated a long time before buying and trying it, cause I was a bit afraid it would not hold on to its hype, disappoint me after a few hours and soon reach its limits. Looked like an enhanced RPG maker title and nothing more ... Man, was I wrong ! The gameplay is fun and the game reinvents itself at the very moment you think you've finally managed to make your way around it. The story is like amazing, especially when you realized it is, for the most part, a one-man game. Minimalism but great characterization, lots of humour, and I really do love how it uses everything the video game media can offer in terms of narration and design. Everything has a purpose, everything is meant to be, even when you thing you're screwing around. The fights are an interesting combination of puzzles (should I make a joke ? then pet them ? or maybe just flex and pick on them ?) and bullet hell/shoot'em'up ... but it's so much more. It can definitely be challenging, but it's never unfair. Also so many nice details and depth in the lore, the universe, the characters ... I truly hope somewhere on this planet, someone is teaching the art of narration by using Undertale as an example. Then you've got the soundtrack. This amazing masterpiece of a soundtrack. Every place, every character has its own musical theme and it adds so much to the atmosphere and the immersion. Maybe this is the word I want to end my review with : immersion. Undertale is something else entirely, not really an RPG, except when you decide it is ; not just a story about a child getting lost in the underground world, it's funny and adorable except when it's really not, but above all, it's extremely immersive. PS : also Undyne is the best, don't argue. (Just kidding - everyone's so interesting and adorable, ugh, I can't even) (She really is the best though)

Planescape: Torment

Simply the best RPG ever

What is it to say about PS:T that hasn't already been told ? A true gem, that too few people know. I always try to convince my friends that it's the best RPG they can find out there - if you like story-based RPG's more than combat-replayable ones, that is to say. A deep, non-linear, dark and powerful story, with a lot of choices that completely define who you are and what you play. The Nameless One is yours, clearly. You act as you want and that defines if you'll be a true Loyal Good or a grey Chaotic Neutral - and this is only the more evident choice to be made. You can grab a zombie's arm, talk to a pregnant wall, grab your own stomach, flirt with a lovely redhaired tieffelin girl, meet demons, become a warrior or a wizard, decide to be a melancholic amnesiac or a convinced hedonist - it's all up to you. It's a deep, philosophical, never manichean game that will take you into an unforgettable journey. Combats are great (if you like D&D rules) and do have beautiful animations but they are clearly not the very heart of the game. Most of the quests can be resolved only by talking and investigating ; some might not be resolved depending on your choices in game, or the person you are. It's a game where having a high Intelligence score is way more helpful than Force, and that alone is enough to make you love Planescape. It's as well written as the first games of the Fallout series, not as sarcastic but much more melancholic and philosophical. I'd say The Witcher would be a great adoptive son for PS:T, were there less fights. But the spirit is the same : making choices. Moral choices. Personal choices. Also it's beautiful and the soundtrack is great. The universe is very original, not the traditional elves-dwarves-witches one. And that atmosphere, good Lord, that atmosphere. Plus if you're a french gamer, here's a great fan guide to have it a little bit upgraded (text patches and stuff). http://mirandir.baldursgateworld.fr/pst-guide-installation/
