The Bard's Tale IV: Director's Cut - Standard Edition

Give it time and it will blow your mind

I picked this up thinking I was going to enjoy it right away. I'm a fan of Wasteland 2/3 and all those new games from "older" game makers who are still at it. Honestly I did not like the game at first. The first few hours, I found it to be lacking in every way. However, once you give it some time it really opens up and you realize how deep and interesting the game is. One of the best RPGs I've played in decades with a lot of what I liked about classic games but with updated mechanics. Love it!

EVERSPACE™

In space, no one can hear you die.

I was itching to play a modern version of Tie Fighter and got this. Very satisfied. The controls and combat are great. The "rogue" element is not as annoying as expected... You do get a sense of progression through the upgrade system but the main complain I have is it does end up feeling repetitive after a while. I also got the Encounters expansion which adds a bit of story to the experience but it's rather paper thin. Still, I've sent a good 14 hours enjoying myself in this beautiful space sim. I recommend playing it and I'm holding my breath for the sequel which probably will introduce a bit more much needed depth. All this game needed was a campaign with a storyline to be perfect!!

Full Throttle Remastered

Classic - but not perfect

Full Throttle is one of those unique games that just nailed it back in the days. This remastered version just proves how good and original the game was and still is. However, this is not lucas art's greatest adventure game. Far from it. It took me 4 hours to beat the whole thing. The puzzles are easy and the areas are straightforward and unidimensional. What's really great is the design, the characters, the graphics, the music... back in the days, this was one of the first CD games to come out. Multimedia, graphics and realistic sounds were more important than actual gameplay. Just compare X-Wings to Rebel Assault (gameplay vs. FMV!) The late 90s were a time when the industry had an opportunity to show that they could be taken seriously... 3d rendered models, nice drawings, real music, voice acting and a movie-type experience was what mattered. Computers were able to generate quality graphics and sound and the CD allowed more data to be transported (no more 10+ floppy discs games! Do you remember Phantasmagoria??) If you want a great adventure game, pick up Day of the tentacle. If you want to experience a very well tough out game, Full Throttle is litteraly part of gaming history.

Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption

Not what I expected... young adult game?

I'm a big fan of Sierra-era adventure games, like a lot of other reviewers. Howerver, this game really is different. That's not a sin of course but if you expect to go back in time and revisit QFG, that's not what this game is about. I only have about 3-4 hours of play but I decided I was not going to play the game anymore. Simply put, the game is boring and feels grindy. The concept is repetitive, the environments feel stale, the writing is funny but the interactions with other NPCs feels childish. Some quests are simply solved by waiting for the event to trigger itself... try as you might, you just cannot solve some quests without waiting for some in game trigger - thus wasting precious time trying to accomplish something that the game hints at but simply cannot be done! That's very frustrating. Combat is sub-par.... I think this game might be aimed at younger gamers. The "harry potter school" feeling is nice. There is progression and the hand painted graphics are nice. I'm giving it 3 stars because I think some of the 5 stars reviews are nostalgia filled and do not really do justice to the actual expercience.

Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun

A rare gem. Do not miss this one.

Superb execution. Well balanced gameplay. Precise and interesting game mechanic. Great characters. Well made missions. All in all, this is some of the best and most accomplished pc gaming I've had in years. It deserves 5 stars because for once, this game is not trying to be some other game, it really is something that stands an its own with, maybe a few flaws, but those come out as design choices rather than shortcomings. I recommend it!

Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Classic pc gaming at it's best

I think GOG's most devoted fans are here for two things; great games that withstood the test of time AND/OR great new "alternative/indie" games. The Witcher (and it's sequels) was a surprise hit from an unknown studio and look at the third enactment's sucess... all thanks to GOG's fanbase and not some other platform full of hot steamy air. AAA titles are just so... pedestrian. This game is a revolution in of itself. Also: The lockpicking system has been the same in the Elder Scrolls Game and Fallout games for YEARS. ALAS...this game introduces a new lockpicking system!! And combat...is different and so much more interesting than just waving your sword around... and no magic. Who needs fire...sparks...ice...elemental anyway? Come on, evolve! This game is such an event I'm mad I did not buy it before. Ignore bad ratings based of bugs... The story, the sense of "meaning" and "purpose". It's all there. Yes there a bugs...put patches are fixing those once in a while. And remember, back in the days, playing pc games was part play, part getting them to work! Roland or sound blaster setting...hum...darn. Crash to DOS again... This feels like playing Daggerfall for the first time again! Areas are smaller than those use TES cities... but they carry meaning and are there for a reason. Finally some good writing. Finally some acting! Get it, play it, enjoy it!
