Dark Future: Blood Red States

Fun and funny, alas also buggy

What the game does (using a diverse arsenal to blow up enemy cars) it does well, even though you're doing more or less the same, over and over again. Missions types are: * blow up a number of enemies * same as first, plus a boss or three * blow up robo-trucks (bigger, better armed and armoured vehicles) * hack robo-trucks by driving long enough inside a moving hacking area beside each * escort * barricade run (essentially blow-up-all-enemies, as you can't outrun them). Could be more, but I'm not complaining. Completing a "season" unlocks new cars, drivers and weapons. Different cars have different weapon mounts and stats and thus require different tactics. Weapons fall into three categories: front-facing, turret and rear. First two can be either energy (laser), rocket, or ballistic shooters. Rear weapon is either mines, bombs or a shotgun. Different weapons also require a bit different approach. Drivers have different perks - but these don't really have much consequence. All in all, the game is fun to play and I found the anti-corporate humour and the redneck-claiming-to-be-patriot rants, served in form of emails between missions, rather funny, (though not exactly LOL-rated). However, I'm knocking off a star for the bugs that always (!!!) crash the game right after finishing a mission, without saving any progress. This happened quite a few times to me (every fifth run or so.) As another reviewer said already: devs have known this for a long time, but don't fix it.

Not great, but not complete crap either

This, uh, "game" is very short, with nothing much to do, but frantically shoot enemy drones with your own drone. Yes, what you see in the trailer is actually all there is. Like somebody said: the game is more like a tech demo than a full game. Definitely not worth full price (or even discounted one). But since I got it at a giveaway, I'm reviewing it from that point: as a free game, it's worth trying out. Pro: * Haven't tried joypad controls that everybody complains so much about, but mouse+KB works just fine. * I found no serious bugs (except some clipping issues), and no crashes. Con: * Your (quite ugly) drone tends to completely obscure the view when its back comes too close to a wall, so you can't see what you're shooting at. * Just two kinds of enemies (normal and upgraded drones). You meet upgraded ones only on the last two levels. * Only six levels, and more or less the same (save for different background). Well, the "Mines" level is somewhat different - IMO even worse than the rest... * Not *the* worst ending of all times, but quite close. Meh: * Gameplay isn't much fun, but I wasn't completely disappointed either. * If you're out in the open the enemies can overwhelm you in a minute, unless you madly strafe left-and-right avoiding hits. But if you find a suitable cover for your back (and preferably top and bottom) you can just wait and shoot approaching drones. So there *is* a wee bit of, huh, tactic involved. * There *exists* a story of sorts (told as a few line of text before each level), though rather lame and completely predictable. 2.5 out of 5. Runded it up, because from the reviews here I expected it to be even worse.

Bit rough around the edges, but fun!

So, you are a mage with power to destroy entire armies - which is exactly what the game will throw at you. Though not from start. You start with one spell (which can destroy any building nevertheless) and a few enemies, but very soon you get more of both. At the end of each map awaits a boss fight plus a final boss at the end. Defeating him unlocks different mage classes you can play, requiring different tactics (some can fly, some can burrow, some wield swords - there's even Santa Claus, showering foes with exploding Xmas gifts). This, a ton of equipment and three map modes, give quite a lot of replayability. True that graphics are a bit simple, prone to clipping glitches, enemies pretty uninspired and locations somewhat repetitive. But you won't notice that at all in the heat of a battle. Not true however that the first boss will terminate you and the game as someone said! That happens only if you enable permadeath checkbox on your first run. Well, YOU CAN if you're vain enough - but why complain about it then? Without permadeath, you simply click Rewrite history and restart the location. Besides, bosses are quite easy to defeat if you don't just stand there and pelt them with spells (as you can other enemies). Modify your lightning or similar spell with Trap, Familiar or preferably Sentinel rune, then run around to avoid being hit and simply throw the spells behind you. The boss will run into them and die sooner or later. Cheap? Maybe. Point being: you can do it any way you want. Like others said, modifying spells with runes is fun and allows some interesting and satisfying destructive combinations. Yay! Alas, game stability is an issue. I experienced quite a few crashes. Which, combined with very long start-up times, is pretty annoying. So, all-in-all, how good is it? Not perfect for sure, but really fun to play an overpowered wizard, destroying (or not) whatever and however you want. It's up to you. For €8 it's a steal. Even moreso on a sale.
