I bought this game on another platform in 2014, but saw GOG/Steam still charging an over the top price for a game that essentially hasn't received an update in ages. Not sure if the developer is even still around, (or alive) the last update was in October 2015! Buying this game now is a risk, 7 years an awful long time to have no patches whatsoever and a huge red flag.
I got this game on another platform, but wanted to share my opinions on here, The first time you load the game, there is almost no help at all, it took me some time to figure out you need to assign EACH villager to a task to get things going, the economy doesn't really take off until you unlock the market & trading, you will want to sell as much as possible to keep your gold coming in. the game does tend to not warn you about certain things like why certain systems aren't working, you have to figure out a lot of it on your own. the game does get better once more villagers appear, they tend to spawn every couple of days, why the game has no way to "spawn" new villagers without sending them in from the outside world is beyond me.. Universim has no issues there.. this game is still very much an alpha so, they could add in, to borrow from the sims, a woo hoo feature, LOL. as for now, it's an okay game, most of the important mods have not been updated, so it's hard to grasp the game w/o any help form the easy start mod or sandbox mode. Hopefully the modder will pay attention and update that soon enough. My review might change in the following months, if a major update is implemented. the game does sometimes crash for no reason, I guess there is a memory leak, I've put in enough time on the game to have 4 1/2 years of game time, I do use a 3rd party app to boost my income & speed the game up really fast, and build things much quicker, the base game is kind of slow, when it comes to that.. I don't think you can really build anything thing other than a church with near the same level of customization as Planet Coaster at this time.. Everything else is cookie cutter buildings, so if you want huge amounts of stuff to customize, wait a few months.. I'm thinking this game might go full release in a year or two, tops..
The first episode is easy, but the first few levels of the 2nd episode are filled with death traps. can't recommend anyone buying this game at all... It's just not fun past the shareware stuff, which is free to play on the web, even today.. I'll keep the game, because returning it (or attempting to) is a real pain.
So glad I don't have to "Stream" this game from shady abandonware sites anymore. Thanks GOG.. I'll tell ALL my friends to download this ASAP. Took my all of 30 minutes to beat the first episode, I wasn't rushing.. Great game, music, the nostalgia is real with this game, I was 11-12 the last time I owned this game, on floppy. This is a great game, and despite the fact it's not the best looking by todays standards, it's playable.. GOG needs more of these retro platformers, free as well, if possible, if not I can fork over $2-5 for each.. Pro tip: press X-X-X (no hyphens needed) to make Jill invincible from enemies, (BUT it doesn't work on water or other environmental hazards)
I own the game on Steam, but I have to review it on here as well... Clearly I never would have expected a SNES era looking game to actually be so much fun... It's really awesome once you go exploring the surrounding areas. The farming is cool too.. It just needs Farming Sim's tractors :D That's my only complaint sometimes it takes a LONG time to farm stuff, but overall it's a deep game so many things going on.. I have yet to learn how to build up relationships with the villagers though... I want to have a BIG family in the game... I have upgraded my house to the biggest size possible.. THAT took forever, had to explore the caves for a while boore I had everything required for the Mega house... If you don't own this game WHAT are you waiting for? $15 at reqular price IS NOT bad... I would easily buy it again on here if I wanted to really do something crazy...
