Clive Barker's Undying

Family Matters

Getting back into things, I decided to play Clive Barker's Undying after finishing Toonstruck and this was certainly quite a fun game! You play as a veteran of the great war who encountered a mage that used a magic stone, which after killing him you end up with the stone as a trophy whilst you were sent to the hospital and Jeremiah Covenant, your friend, moved on. Due to the strange powers you've been involved in the occult and investigate the paranormal, soon deciding that there are forced not of this world at work. During your time away, you had a letter dated from over a month ago from your friend Jeremiah, who needs your help and soon you learn that there is an evil presence and he confesses to you that he and his siblings went to these ancient standing stones, read out verses from their father's book as they were playing around but after that, his siblings had become...changed. Soon enough you gain all kinds of magical artifacts, especially the Scythe that has the power to kill anything. The only weapon to kill anything that's immortal. You have both a health and magic meter whilst facing off against the many monsters and creatures that you have to contend against. The designs of many of the creatures, you can tell, are very much based on Clive Barker's imagination if you've ever see Hellraiser. He even lends his voice to one of the characters, Ambrose Covenant, who doesn't appear much but his minions certainly can give you a headache. The large mansion, where you often return to after defeating a boss or just getting items for such a task, can be confusing as the game doesn't provide any maps, however, the doors to locations you've already been to/don't need to go to are locked so you won't get lost too easily. Dungeon Keeper Gold™

It's goot to be bad!

This one is a bit of a morbid one, but I streamed this on the anniversary of my late bf: Stream: https://youtu.be/EWnP1JLir-o and just wanted to play a game that he would've liked whilst also drinking some alcohol. Anyway, the game itself. I'd only ever played Dungeon Keeper 2 in the past, which still stands up to this day and so this stream was also an experiment to actually try out the original which I had in my library for so many years, but had no excuse to actually play it! All the similar features are in this first one, of course, but one thing that I loved this above the previous is that there's more variety of minions and more monstrous versions too, including tentacles for having water tiles on your dungeon and giant beetles, ect. Something I felt was missing from the sequel as most of them were humanoid apart from one or two creatures. The story is to fight against the forces of good and expand your influence throughout the underground, whilst also guarding your dungeon heart from any attacks and gaining the spell to summon Honey, the devil on the display of both games. That said, it's a bit of a gambit when you use him in the original game as if he doesn't like your dungeon layout he's as likely to attack you as any invaders, but the trade off is that he's extremely powerful and mows through enemies with his scythe as if they were nothing! The first game to birth the genre of playing the bad guy and running your own dungeon to fight against heroes and despite it's age, it's still a solid game to play and due to updates from GOG, you can beef up the resolution which makes it far easier on the eyes as I found out mid-stream.

MDK

A stranger shooter

Forgot about reviewing this, but here we go. I remember this game very well from when I played it back on the PS1 so many years ago. Back when it was new! The gunplay was fun, coupled with the different ammo types, usage of torpedoes to shoot down vents and get the enemy, the odd art style and the very strange direct this game often goes in! The game was created by the Earthworm Jim creator, Doug TenNapel. The same insanity is in this game where you use nukes for keys to doors, your pilot is a four-armed dog and the villains are all strange and each boss battle is different too. This really hit me with the nostalgia vibe as I streamed it, since I originally played it on the PS1, but I do not thing I ever actually finished it. You get a short briefing and there's even a potential for speed-running as if you do not defeat the boss in time, the location of a city that the aliens are aiming at gets blown up! No real punishment happens because of this, I find beyond a silly comment with something like "Oops, Weymouth has been destroyed. Oh well, it was only Weymouth" or something like that, but I can't actually remember the name of those towns that were being used tbh. There's some fun gore in it where you can shoot off the alien's heads for a kill shot, but if you hit them in the leg they're known to limp around and cry for help allowing you to be as sadistic as you want in this. Some maps have Earthworm Jim tokens that you can collect, followed with is trademark "Groovy!" every time you manage to pick one up, often in these skiing sections. I named the creator because, as I was informed in my stream, the guy turns out to be a scumbag, being opposed to Same-sex marriage and deliberately misgendering a journalist who reviewed Earthworm Jim. However, he no longer holds the licence from what I understand so feel free to enjoy the game series guilt-free! Gameplay/Stream: https://youtu.be/Uc8XejCf1MQ

Redneck Rampage Collection

Great track, but not so great memories.

A fun little game that my late BF had introduced me to. The music is hilarious and fun along with the concept of playing as these Hill Billies who are the only ones out there to fight and save the world from an alien invasion! Beyond this one stream (https://youtu.be/1hylDAb9HqM) I haven't actually played the game too much. Some of it due to painful memories and also how the music was claimed by some BS third party thanks to YouTube and allowing these crappy claims. Still great fun to play this though and also on GOG you get to download the entire sound track too!

Outlaws + A Handful of Missions (Classic, 1997)

A Classic Cowboy Story

They really don't make these games like they used to! This was made by LucasArts, back when they put real effort into what games they made. It also brings back a great amount of nostalgia as my friend's older brother played this and I remember the fun animated scenes, however, there was so much more to it when I actually got to playing this. You play as John Marsdon. Ex-Marshall who was let go after killing a group of thugs before they could give state's evidence and when he goes out shopping, a gang attack his home, wanting him to sell the property, but they go too far as they burn down his home, kill his wife and kidnap his daughter (Voiced by Lil Pickles' voice actor) and now he's on a path for revenge, trying to chase after his daughter and killing every bandit that gets in his way. The bosses in this game are different in how you approach each one, but also, on the hard difficulty you can die very easily, yet the same is said for the bandits too. The pest tactic is to use cover when you can and the appropriate weapon for the right situation. Not to mention, alternate fire is a great way to get some milage out of weapons like using the rapid fire function on the revolver, the scope on the rifle and shooting either both or one barrel on a double-barreled shotgun. For anyone who may need help getting this game to run properly or even be capturable for streaming, consult these threads as I looked into this to help me: Best Settings: https://www.gog.com/forum/outlaws_a_handful_of_missions/guide_for_best_3d_acceleration_settings/page1 Those having issues with Alt-Tab: https://www.gog.com/forum/outlaws_a_handful_of_missions/alttab_not_working Hope this review was helpful to you and I've included my stream if you are interested in watching my first experience with the game. I totally recommend it to anyone willing to play DOS games. My Stream of the game: https://youtu.be/ozGhLCfSt2Y

Harvester

A old disturbing game with odd context

*Disclaimer: I streamed the GOG version of this so if you see this review on other sites, assume that is the one I'm talking about.* My first part of the stream here: https://youtu.be/5w3J3g42G2g Entering this game with as little knowledge as possible, (which is generally how I try to enter all games before playing them on stream) I only knew that this game has a history of being disturbing and even controversial, but luckily for me, I don't have any triggers so I was able to play it without taking a lot of mental harm. That said, this certainly isn't a game for everyone and is not for those with a weak stomach or are easily offended since the time-period being depicted people have choice opinions of others from different marginalised groups. That said, the story itself is one that starts with intrigue where you play as Steve, who wakes up with amnesia and is surrounded by his "family" and has memories of things that don't exist like such as a remote control, but when he tried to conjure that memory up it was a struggle. Ontop of the amnesia, he is also meant to be getting married and as you investigate the town you find that the people in this town are a either strange, twisted, psychopaths, outrageous or any mixture of the above. At times this game felt like it has content in this to just be a shocking game, however there is some real substance in this in regard to the mystery, the secret society inside the lodge, plot-twists and the ending which allows everything to make sense! I have more to discuss in regards to my own theories of the ending and the world, however, I do not wish to drop off any spoilers. It's one of those games that if you are curious, you should most certainly experience it as it should certainly belong in video game history as one of those missing gems. Especially with the acting in regards to the FMV footage in game.

Startopia

A much funnier version of DS9

I have played this game for over 21 hours on GOG's launcher where I also streamed it on Twitch and uploaded it via YouTube: https://youtu.be/t566yIlznS8 This was a real delight to play as a fan of such management sims as Theme Hospital, Dungeon Keeper and so on. In this game you play as an administrator of a starbase, however, you are often not the only person in charge of the starbase and there are others out to take over and take your place. In this situation, you have to take over sections of the base aggressively with the use of security staff and robots to hack the gates shut. Every mission of the campaign explores one or more of the specialised rooms, starting with incredibly useful ones like the recycler (turns ANYTHING into energy) up to more advanced things such as the Research Lab and the Bio Deck which is used both as a place of meditation and relaxation, but also a place to grow plants you can harvest for resources to either research or sell to trade ships, including a reoccurring character, Arona Daal who often sells you items that he obtains in a suspicious manner. The Hospital is also vitally important (joke intended) because certain illnesses are akin to the xenomorph from aliens and an alien visitor may die and out of their corpse comes a giant insectoid creature rampaging around the station! There is a lot of fun to had with this game, not to mention the humour in both character descriptions, but mostly in the AI who enjoys poking fun at you "organics" and often warns you about situations on the station that can happen such as deaths, traders, bomb placement and so on. Those are some big stations out there and they need an administrator to straighten it out!

Inherit the Earth

A Furry DOS game? I'm all in!

Inherit The Earth is a game that I initially wasn't certain about what I'd get from it. The game is your typical point-and-click adventure game where you play as Rif of the Fox Time and get accused of stealing the Orb of Storms which foretells the weather and is something just about every tribe bases its livelihood on. For important things such as crops and when to save up for winter, to the boars getting their mud baths prepared. For a more fun playthrough here is Part 1 of my stream of this game: https://youtu.be/KOr-FX_APoI There are so many great and funny scenes in this game that I still remember, despite it being well over a year since I played it with moments like Rif looking at a gate and proclaiming "Wow, look at the size of those knockers!" to your two companions assisting you in confusing the doorkeeper with an old Abbot and Costello routine we've seen many times, but never known where it originally came from. There are numerous lewd moments which I later learnt was perhaps due to the fact this game was cut and forced to be a kids game when the initial concept was supposed to be for a more mature audience (Rif walking in on a showering female wolf and the feline fortune teller constantly suggesting that Rif lie down and take it easy) but those are still very harmless and extremely hilarious. another negative as that I'm afraid it ends on a cliff-hanger and multiple times the creators have attempted to Kickstarter to bring it back. Creating a sequel with the vision that they have, but currently, they are situated on Patreon which you can find here: https://www.patreon.com/wyrmkeep where they are currently creating the world in webcomic form due to two failed Kickstarter attempts. For now, I'd still say it's well worth getting and I hope the gameplay of it found on YouTube can help you reach that decision.

I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream

A controversial classic

As suggested by the title, there are numerous controversial things within this game as the horror doesn't pull any punches. Content warning for as it contains mentions or containing some of the following: rape, victim blaming, concentration camp, death, torture, murder and corpses. This title was quite often seen as controversial due to one of the characters you play as being Nimdok, someone who worked with the Nazi's to kill, maim and experiment on the prisoners or those who got in his way. All five characters are being tortured for over 109 years because of what they did before he kidnapped them and decided to punish them for their numerous crimes. Like I said earlier, this game doesn't pull it's punches in the dark topics it covers so I wouldn't recommend it if any of the content above is triggering for you. Apart from this, the most I can say without spoiling much is that like many classic adventure games of the time (like Sam & Max, by Lucas Arts) you can get stuck to save often just in case and the ending can be very different if you don't do things correctly or you can get trapped in a chapter if you make a mistake. However, this game allows you to skip talking scenes so that you can get back to where you were stuck, correct when you did wrong, then move on to where you got stuck last time. The game is thought-provoking and AM is an incredibly entertainingly cheesy villain too. I streamed this myself and if you want to see some gameplay I have a link here to the first part to the game on my YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/mxHayuuxQeY
