This game runs great on older hardware. If you like fast paced first person shooter, this game is a must have. It's as much fun today as when it first released. I'm really enjoying this game.
I'm a big fan of the Metal Slug run & gun arcade series. I was searching the web looking for a similar but more modern game when I found Guns, Gore & Cannoli and Guns, Gore & Cannoli 2. Both were on sale for very low prices on GOG so I grabbed them both. Like many games in a series, the first one really is the best and for me it holds true here. I absolutely love the game and have been playing it non-stop since I bought it. It's a comical shooter with a goofy storyline but it's very fun to play. I read one review noting it was too short. Easy fix. Increase the difficulty level and play through it again. I am pleased to have found this series on sale but it's certainly worth full price. I'm glad I bought them and if you are a fan of run & gun games this is one you shouldn't miss.
I have not had this game collection running since Windows XP. Back then I had to create a patch for the games just to get them to run on XP. I pretty much forgot about it as it would not run on anything newer than Windows XP without further work on my part. I probably could have spent some time on it to make it run on Wndows 10 but didn't want to put out that much effort. I was excited to see it on GOG for a very low price. I bought and installed the collection complete with the cuss pack. After all, this game isn't near as funny without the cuss pack. (WARNING: NOT FOR KIDS) Back when I first bought this collection the cuss pack was an added purchase. It's free to download and install with the GOG versions. This old collection brings back fond memories of several hours playing this series. They did nothing to improve the graphics but I think I can bring the resolution a bit more up to date on my own and look forward to the challenge of doing so. I'm so glad to see this running again on modern hardware and Windows 10. If you don't allow your children to play, I highly recommend the game. If you kids that use the same PC you installed on definitely DO NOT install the cuss pack.
I have all the mainstream Metal Slug games on every system they were offered for. This includes original SNK MVS cartridges and a full custom SNK MVS consolized system. I am running Unibios 4.0 on my console and emulator platforms. This BIOS does open up the available regions and even cheats if you choose to use them. I also have the "Complete Metal Slug PC Collection" from several years ago. It's a decent collection but you need 3rd party game pad mapping software as it's made for keyboard only. I have played all the titles through emulation in Retroarch and through FPGA hardware simulation with a MiSTer FPGA setup. Okay now that you know I am very familiar with all ports and original copies of the Metal Slug series I'll give my honest opinion on this series offered by GOG. I give them all 5 stars tat are well earned. They are not expensive. They are mapped to my Xbox One wireless controller by default. Other than cheats, they have options for every difficulty level, a set number of lives or freeplay, They have video options for all standard PC resolutions up to 1920 X 1080p. You can choose your aspect ratio as 4:3 (original) or 16:9 in all available resolutions. I see some reviews with complaints about slowdowns in the games. This is common at exactly the same places on all my systems. It is matching the original NeoGeo console and arcade systems. It is possible to have these games in high resolution and no slowdowns but that would take a very expensive total remastering of each title. These are NOT remastered games and the low price should indicate that. I hope they are all fully remastered someday but until that day comes, these are as good as it gets. These also cost about 10 times less than a fully remastered title would start at.
