Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader

Very Solid. But lacking Voice.

If you've played OwlCat's Pathfinder games you know what this is. However there are improvements. The game seems more performant and slick. It has far less bugs. It's more polished. The story, atmosphere, characters are all good and similar to their past games. The glaring change to me is how little voice acting there is. It's noticeably less than what was in WOTR.

Trine 5: A Clockwork Conspiracy

Very much a Trine game

If you've played any previous Trine game you know what to expect. It's very much in the same formula. But it's polished, controls well, and better graphics than I originally thought. It's an excellent co-op game. My niece and I enjoy playing the series together quite a bit. The tone is much that of a children's fairy tale and is well suited to all ages. Gameplay is primarily that of a puzzle/platformer with a little bit of combat. It's a quality product at a reasonable price. I recommend it.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV

It's good, but not great

Trails is my favorite series. But after finishing the Cold Steel Arc I think it's the weakest story so far. The gameplay is great. The returning characters are great. The music is OK. But Cold Steel is over extended. Class 7 is too big and the characters are watered down. The mission to mission stuff can be good but drags on too long and the overarching plot feels cheap to me. It's worth playing and the gameplay is good, but the writing was stronger in the earlier entries.

Baldur's Gate 3

Special

It's so great to get a massive DRM free game with no online purchases and everything included. This Elden Ring, and Witcher 3 should be praised for that. I'm going to compare this to DOS2 and Pathfinder. So far, I prefer the combat in Pathfinder. I have a better sense of control and understanding of battles in that. Pathfinder is harder. DOS2 is easier than BG3. Where this game shines is in exploration, presentation, and dialogue. There is so much verticality and interesting spaces to explore. It blows away Pathfinder or even DOS2 in this regard. And the cinematic conversations are in another universe compares to all other CRPGs.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie

I hope this get patched

This is my favorite series. The games are great. But this port has bugs. An the DLC they are charging an arm and a leg for was ripped out of the previous PC port where it was all included. So while I love this series, I don't love this publisher.

Age of Wonders 4: Premium Edition

Great 4X if you don't care about story

This is a mix between HOMM & Civ. It's a well made 4X game. You can customize A LOT. Say you want to be an elf, you could be a demon elf, plant elf, undead elf, armored elf, etc. The tome system lets you set your tech tree/play style. The environments can be customized. It has an excellent UI with tooltips to learn. It is deep & very tactical but accessible to new players. Graphics on the overworld are great. Combat looks less impressive though. Performance is not amazing but is OK. I wish it had more of a story campaign. It's weak there. But in terms of gameplay & the ability to customize your play, it is a wonderful skirmish generator.

Symphony of War: The Nephilim Saga

GBA Fire Emblem for PC

This game plays very much like the Fire Emblem games on the GBA. It has really nice graphics for the story segments that would make for a nice "normal" 2D JRPG. I actually wish the combat map used them. The portraits and music are also very nice. Works great with Keyboard/Mouse or gamepad. The writing is good, but maybe not quite as polished as Fire Emblem. The game is really great though and it's easy to recommend to any strategy game fans.

Chained Echoes

Looks really promising

I haven't beaten this yet. But I really like it so far. The look and gameplay feels a bit like Chrono Trigger w/ a dash of FF6. It has tall sprites and no random battles like Trigger. But the story and tone is all its own. The battle system is very cool with some unique mechanics. So far the writing has been good and there seem to be a bunch of interesting characters in your party. I have run into some bugs that I hope will be fixed. But if you like 16-bit JRPGs don't hesitate to play it.

Streets of Rage 4

Very polished

This may be the best beat-em up game ever made. It looks really good, has decent music, multiplayer, runs great on Linux, and has combat that is actually kind of deep. The DLC for this game is worth it if you like the game. It raises the unique playable characters to 8 that do feel different, a training mode, and a survival mode. If you've ever enjoyed a beat-em up game I think you will appreciate this game. It does it really well.
