I love playing this game! It is probably one of my favourite 4x games since HoMM5 or Civ6. It has a great customization and good progression through game play.
The different factions and magical paths add a wonderful variance to each game! The AI could use for improvements in terms of the map movements and strategy but generally it is okay in combat.
Now.. Let's talk about why only 3 stars. This game has a shelf-life one day when they decide they don't want to support it anymore they will shut off their multiplayer servers and the game will die. You can ONLY play online there is no LAN play which is unacceptable.
I'm writing the review now because I was SO excited to play this tonight with some friends but Paradox's or whom-ever's servers are having trouble right now and it is barely functional.
If the devs remove the awful online requirement for playing with friends this is an easy 5 stars, but I can't give a game with a definite shelf-life of functionality a great review. I really wish I could.
This is a mix between HOMM & Civ. It's a well made 4X game. You can customize A LOT. Say you want to be an elf, you could be a demon elf, plant elf, undead elf, armored elf, etc. The tome system lets you set your tech tree/play style. The environments can be customized. It has an excellent UI with tooltips to learn. It is deep & very tactical but accessible to new players.
Graphics on the overworld are great. Combat looks less impressive though. Performance is not amazing but is OK. I wish it had more of a story campaign. It's weak there. But in terms of gameplay & the ability to customize your play, it is a wonderful skirmish generator.
With customisation rivalled only by the previous game, Planetfall and another game by the name of Fallen Enchantress, AoW4 is versatile with its gameplay and systems. You have a great level of customisation where you can make your own race and faction both looks and traits and then a lot of options for generating the realm (world) you want to play in. It's undeniable that AoW4 is fun and engaging, the overworld management is similar to the modern Civilization titles, the battles are like a mix of HOMM and XCOM and then you have retained features from previous AoW games to create this mix that makes it the best 4X fantasy game on the market.
Some of the major changes and ways in which this game does differently to other games, is that the game forgoes a traditional campaign and instead injects story moments into the realms you play in the more you play. By the way, created heroes can be saved into a pool (as well as your army's race) for future narrative use, which is a really cool feature! Another change is the tome system, which is basically research, whereby you select a tome of magic to pursue and choose spells in those tomes to research; it's a good compromise between following the same research path and having some RNG.
Overall, the game is easily one of the best strategy games of all time. It's not the most complex, best looking and content-filled game ever, but it doesn't need to be because of how fun, customisable and engaging AoW4 is. There's almost no comparison to be made.
I'm a bit confused, i love the design, the variety of the units is what makes you go on discovering fro more. What i can't stand is how the game is balanced, other factions seem to have some bonuses or buffs, i've seen a city producing three units in 2 turns, and although i conquered the majority of its collapsing empire, pillaged its resources, this guy showed up with a triple full army? Where did they get the resources?
Another complaint, infection's armies love to cross entire lands, just to attack me, ignoring everyone else...
