Hollow Knight

The gold standard of metroidvanias

Although the game can be difficult at times, especially the optional content, I feel like this is the game people should try if they are new to the genre. I especially like the charm system, which let's you mix and match buffs to best suit your play style, as well as each boss fight.

Hollow Knight: Silksong

More complexity doesn't mean better

The best example of this is health. In the previous game you started with 3 health, but in this game you start with 5. However, since a lot of enemies (and most bosses) deal 2 damage, you effectively only take 2.5 hits before dying. This also makes finally getting a health upgrade less rewarding as dying in 3 hits or 2.5 hits is practically the same. That's not to mention the quest and inventory system that both feel like a downgrade from the previous game. If you're new to the series, definietly start with the first game.
