I am a huge fan of the first three Deus Ex games. This one was an excellent return to form that blends modern issues with a cutting look at sociopolitical issues and how people respond to being manipulated and threatened. Or, it's a game about a robot man in a trench coat who wears sunglasses at night beating the ever living crap out of anyone he wants.
It's a standard shootem up. The game has some random loot elements, could b a time suck, and was a little harder than I expected on my graphics card. If you like shooting things, you'll probably like this one. If you want substance, you won't find it here.
The game is fun but it requires grinding and uses bullet sponge mechanics to extend the length of boss fights. This would be fine but then they took away my 150 inhalers and switched it to a recharge mechanic for "realism". That's fine but now I had to head shot cyber ninjas thirty times in the head without getting hit and so it's the fun factor that takes the hit.
It's very similar to Metal Gear Solid 5 in terms of gameplay although you move more sluggishly, your weapons aren't as over the top, and the story is less compelling. You basically save people, babysit other personalities and blunder your way through the story. It ramps up as you go but it takes a while to get there.
The plot is basically Alex Jones personified combined with cyberpunk, X-Files, and the height of the 90s black leather hacker imagery. This game has a simplified open world design, more like Pokemon with characters data dumping complex ideas, compact areas meant to depict entire cities, and an emotionally reserved protagonist who can believably slaughter everyone around him or defend every life, all while spouting idealogical theory. This is not so much a thinking man's game as an 18 year old's version of a thinking man's game. This was and is one of my favorite games simply because it lets you explore ideas, hear some wild conpsiracy theories which are just accurate enough to get you thinking, and filled with a streamlined story that keeps you moving. You will have plenty of chances to be a government man in black who kills without question or you can play a pacifist idealist. In terms of gamplay, this was one of the first FPS games to introduce the mechanism that every problem has multiple ways of solving them. Pro-tip, swimming is useless and blowing people up with the GEP gun means you can't loot the bodies.
This is a great real time strategy game. Blizzard survived on the accomplishments they made during the 90s and this is one of their best. I especially like how they blended Warhammer grimdark with humor and goofiness. It does have its weaknesses like weak AI and the inability to zoom out but it's a 90s game and you get what you get.
The game is thematic and filled with good looking environments. It feels like it was built around the Doom 2016 model but it doesn't quite deliver. You have close combat KO ability, a grappling hook, and high mobility. You're squishy and have to kill baddies to recover health. That said, it's a room by room combat game where you kill a lot of gang members. Think fighting 30-50 gangers per mission, even if most Necromunda gangs cap out at 12. The enemies could do with being more interesting to look at as most are clad in dark colors.
