Act of War: Gold Edition

Solid but with flaws

You will know what you get for your money if you have played any post 2000 RTS. The units are for the most part "believable". I like that one of the resources is oil. That gives it a "realistic" feel instead of some magic substance a la unobtanium. The missions in the singleplayer campaign in Direct Action are well balanced, no too easy and not too hard. One flaw in both games are that once you set a rally point from a buildning you have to click on another building or unit to get rid of that mode as you can't press escape to reset. A small oversight but annoying nonetheless. In High Treason the last mission in my opinion is too hard, even on easy. I'm by no means an RTS ace but I've played my fair share of them. Age of Empires Homeworld Battle for Middle Earth Star Wars Force Commander, Galactic Battlegrounds, Empire at War with their expansions Ground Control... Still I could not finish that last mission without resorting to a semi cheat and going another route with my units and avoiding a certain trigger until I had prepared the battlefield. I'd give direct action a 4 and High Treason a 3.
