I'm going to keep this review simple, because there's very little to review - it's Command and Conquer: Generals with some mechanics expanded upon, with very Tom Clancy-esque storyline. A must play for Command and Conquer fans, something to take notice of for all other RTS fans, too conservative and traditional for anyone not liking the genre.
I dont have the GOG Version, but i played this game to death back then. It´s basically THE game for fans of C&C: Generals - and everybody else, who loves the genre. If you ask me: It´s a Gem. It is not "the best" game ever made, but it will entertain and please you. (Atari did not pushed this game enough, so it became kind of "forgotten". Like "Boiling Point: Road to hell"...)
This game is about "War on Terror" and Oil. It has a lot of Cut-Scenes with real actors in it and a solid story. The gameplay reminds hard to every known C&C-Game. You will build a small base, move your units from A to B and after a cutscene mostly to C. The tactics are "Rock–Paper–Scissors": If you have the right counterunit, you will win the fight. It´s nothing special. Back then the graphics were superb, but i doubt, that it will make your jaw drop in 2015. It´s still nice though. The highlights are the "Cities" like London or San Francisco. They have a lot of details and the proportions are right. (Your tank is not in the same size of an ordinary building ...)
The cheesy story, the nice looking "sets", the soundtrack and the action - i really dont know what to say after all these years. But if you LOVE C&C: Generals you will really enjoy this. I did and it was just pure fun after all. (Never played the Multiplayer.)
[The Gold version contains also the "High Treason" AddOn, which is not as good as the original game and a bit harder. But still fun. ]
The main game is awesome. The expansion, High Treason on the other hand has a gamebreaking bug in one of it's early levels that makes progression impossible without skipping a chunk of story.
In the naval combat/sub hunt mission a sound bug occurs which also results in all your ships freezing. this makes the mission absolutely unplayable and thus...
Amazed that for such an old game it hasn;t been patched/solved yet despite many others reporting hte same bug on steam etc.
This unexpectedly disappeared from Steam some time on the last 12-18 months so I'm glad to see it pop up here on GOG. Act of War reminds me a little of World in Conflict - not so much the modern combat RTS style, but the fact that it was very well received upon release and then quickly faded into obscurity. A quick check of Metacritic confirms for me that I wasn't alone in thinking it was a very solid game, with a rating of 82%.
With high production values, live action FMV and some cool near-future technology to fight along side your to-be-expected M1 Abrams tanks and Humvees - exo-suit armour anyone? If you're itching for some old-school base building RTS, you can do far, far worse than Act of War.
I got this game when it got published back 2005 and bought in on a hunch.
One of the best investments ever. :)
The campaign is nicely done, the cut scenes in between missions are good at furthering the story and finally the gameplay is everything you know from other games with some twists of their own.
It was a blast going through the campaign. Capturing enemy soldiers, ruining enemy plans with exosekeleton soldiers or waltzing through the enemy base with the heavy stuff. :)
Sadly I couldn't get the Base Game, nor the expansion to run properly a few years later.
I really hoped that some digital distribution service would figure out how to do so properly.
Seeing it here on GOG it was an instabuy. Can't recommend this little gem enough.
BUY IT! PLAY IT! LOVE IT!
This gets solid 4,5 stars from me.
PS: I really hope now that Shattered Union finds it's way to GOG.
