How is this even considered a game and how do people like it is kinda mind blowing to me, this will be an unpopular opinion, but I wanna be honest how I felt about this. After the intro stuttering on my i5 13400f, 32gb ddr4 and rtx 3060, I was excited to get ready into the game. After a long cut-scene that could cure insomnia, I started pushing the W key, waiting and waiting for the game to start. Without even the ability to run, after a few minutes I already realized, the game started. Walking, walking, walking, walking, walking. After refilling the water I just uninstalled and deleted this, realized I have been tricked into doing chores for some religious bs. 2 stars for the interesting environments, graphics, but the unique elements do not mix. What does pixel art and Christianity have in common? Oh yeah the Sisters were doing Jesus Pixel art on their Commodore 64 in their free time after reading the bible and then playing Tetris with Alexey Pajitnov. If you want a true russian puzzle game, play Tetris, it is actually fun and your PC does not turn into a jet when you run this non game and you do not fall asleep, also... the game is 48 GB, for 4 hours.
A well crafted 32 bit platformer with tight controls, nice characters and level variety, and surprisingly, absolutely fantastic music. I love platformers and lizards, so this feels like this game was made for me. However, there are huge problems with this game, particularly the PC version. Let's start with the problems that can be fixed, to the issue that made me prefer the PS1 version with Duckstation. - ridiculously low resolution, that looks tragic on any larger display without good shaders (can be fixed with post-processing in Duckstation, CRT Royale / scanlines) or hooking up the game to a CRT monitor of course. -no geometry, colour and texture correction, that is in Duckstation, which can really enhance the game experience (playing in Duckstation will fix this problem) BUT the absolutely biggest problem for me with this game is, that IT IS HARD AS HELL, especially the last world. Even John from Digital Foundry did not finish this game on original hardware, it is that hard. You may say, the game saves after each level, so it is not a problem right? Well, unfortunately, the PC version uses the PASSWORD system. And you can save, when you find tapes IN THE GAME. Unless you are a god at platforming games or played this game a lot as a child, this can only be fixed by playing the game with Duckstation and using savestates. I mapped save at 0 and load at 1, and playing on a regular Logitech controller with a D-Pad. That way, when you mess up, you can easily load the part you saved before. Even with save states, the later levels are a real pain in the ass. I am glad GOG preserved the PC version without any outdated DRM code, but at the same time, I wish they implemented at least some minor improvements to make the PC port playable. Worth getting for preservation, but at the same time, I recommend playing the PS1 version on Duckstation. Another negative is Gex's monologue can get a bit tiring, but you can turn that off so it is a very small nitpick.
I believe this is one of the greatest modern games when it comes to gameplay and story, and of course, visuals are incredible as well, and so is the acting. I wish you could buy it without Lost Legacy since I prefer the original game, and 100 GB is a lot of storage for one game. But this is definitely a game worth your time, and I am really happy it is preserved here without any stupid DRM, Rockstar, this is how you should do it, not sell cracked copies since you are too lazy to remove the DRM yourself. I wish Max Payne 3 and Manhunt would be here as well since those are also incredible games. Uncharted 4 on PC is really well-optimized, with enough customization, and DLSS on Quality setting looks great if you lack the power in higher resolutions (My RTX 3060 is too weak for 3440x1440 natively). It surprisingly plays great with a keyboard and mouse. Naughty Dog and Playstation, thank you for bringing this masterpiece on GOG, now the game is legally well preserved. I wish we got Uncharted 1,2,3 and God of War 3 on PC and GOG, oh well, I think this is the first Naughty Dog game to come to PC since Keef the Thief: A Boy and His Lockpick in 1989, I expected to get this game legally DRM free in 10 years, but we got it in less, so this is kind of a miracle people are getting smarter. Thanks to the people who made this possible. Definitely worth grabbing it for 30€, I think the price is very fair considering the quality you are getting.
Worst gameplay I ever experienced, the story is completely broken, and the animations are actually not great, Silent Hill 3 from 2003 had better facial animations, funny how Japanese are always so ahead technically. David Cage is a joke creator and his works should be not considered art. The only reason I would even recommend you to play this is for Ellen Page, but even then you should watch some of the movies she was in instead like Juno, where her acting shines just a little. The whole Aiden thing is not explored enough even after 10 hours. Super Mario Bros from 1985 had much more gameplay than this, this is just a bad interactive movie with expensive technology for the time and known actors, they did their job well especially Dafoe, but the super poor script unfortunately made this a complete waste. The environments and graphics are still great but you might as well turn on an adult website and j--k off to it, and you will literally have more interactivity and emotional journey. Silent Hill 2 had a more interactive story with multiple endings, and the gameplay and story were actually genius, and that was in 2001. I would even say, the graphics based on artistic value are much better (for the technology at the time). This is not even a game, not even a movie, it is a confused piece that is completely broken, try to play the story chronologically and you will see how bad it actually is. The outcome is the same, you can not die (what is the point of concentrating then). If the controls were not so complicated for no reason, you could probably play this game with your eyes closed. If you are really interested in this, I recommend watching a YouTuber playing this, you will have a much better time. But I warn you, there is no story to be found here besides at the end. This is not a game, this is not art, and this is barely a movie. I recommend avoiding all works of David Cage. Even though Detroit Become Human is a lot better than this, it is still not worth your time.
