What a scam. I found the bonuses very cool, it also has a box art of OG 3DO Gex, game I really love. But MOST THE VIDEOS, TRAILERS, EVEN PICTURES ARE PASSWORD PROTECTED! I wanted to unpack the .pak files so I can print the 3DO cover as it is in very high quality (around 15 mb) and have it in my room, also preserve the amazing interviews etc. Positives - rewind feature, very nice GUI including nice ambience, decent CRT filter (although no CRT Royale, which I use on Duckstation) Negatives - PS1 copies. Which is extremely sad from a preservation standpoint. 3DO version has slightly more detailed Gex model and ACTUAL SAVING. If it wasn't 30 fps, it is the definitive version. I was really hoping for a port from a source code or recompiled 3DO version. Camera is still way too close, so you can fall with no fault of your own on your first playthrough. As the last boss has camera further away (as the only level in the game, which makes it even more frustrating) it was clearly possible. There is ABSOLUTELY no reason to buy this, as the bonus files are useless, you can only watch it in the user interface in-game. They should have been as goodies as separate download, like GOG usually does. And GEX 2 and 3, as Duckstation got insanely good as an emulator, this collection has no value besides the bonuses on one place, since you can customise the clocks, SSAA antialiasing, shaders, integer scaling, and everything to your liking, I was shocked not even an AA and framerate option is in Gex 2 and 3. I was hoping for a recompilation so at least you can play Gex 2 and 3 at 240 fps, If they slapped the camera a bit further and adjusted the resolution accordingly I would jump from happiness, and if Gex 1 was somehow playable at 120 or ideally 240 fps I would cry from happiness. Instead we got PS1 roms with a nice graphical interface, + bonus files you can only see in-game, treating you like an animal when you explore the folders.
Unoptimised garbage, Enhanced Edition which has been worked on for 8 years has much more love put into it, than this stuttering nonsense that makes my GPU cry. it is so poorly made it relies on upscaling which is absolutely unnaceptable. A real disrespect to Masahiro Ito, Hiroyuki Owaku, Takayoshi Sato and the entire Team Silent. Only good thing is the music by Akira Yamaoka, but I still prefer the original. I wish Konami gave a proper Japanese team creative freedom to make something cool again. As much as I love Poland, Bloober Team did not have the capacity and that is not their fault, I am sure they tried their best and Konami is just ass to their workers and consumers. Sadly this review will get downvoted, but this is just not a game you will remember on your death bed compared to the original. Greed and materialism are strong in this world and Konami wanted to make sure they get some money as Silent Hill 2 was so successful, but even if it was programmed properly (even og SH2 PC port was in a better state, yes it lacked soft shadows etc but that was more of a directx limitation rather than bad work). I am into og SH2 more than half of my life, saw the making of, played the OG with born from a wish scenario, but when I played this, I was disgusted from the get-go. You will not get much of the atmosphere when all you hear is your GPU loading assets you cannot see, timing and shots/acting in the cutscenes, wrong camera, Maria/Mary distinction completely loses its meaning as they made her less sexy (I dont wanna spoil too much but her more revealing was the entire point). Even without the technical problems (i5 13400f, rtx 3060, 32gb ddr4, m2 ssd), this waste would be inferior to the original, that had its BRILLIANT own engine (thx for losing its source code Konami), not Unreal which was not even built for this type of game, I am done writing as it makes me upset, I do not wanna be negative so I apologize, please play Enhanced Edition (and rather buy SH4 on GOG)
I upgraded my GPU from R9 270x to GTX 1060 to play this game at max settings back in 2016. I still think this is one of the best looking games of all time, even though it is 9 years old which is incredible, but also sad how game optimisation / art design has fallen. No ray tracing, no AI upscaling, just pure art. You can even disable the motion blur and TAA. i5 13400f and rtx 3060 + oled monitor, you have to play it for yourself. Along with Uncharted 4, this is one of those games that you just cannot believe how well they run on your hardware concidering what you see. Oh yeah, getting solid 60 fps is incredibly easy on decent hardware. Big up to all the programmers, this is what happens when people do their job properly. As I dislike Steam, I am so happy it is finally on GOG to download whenever I want. Controls in this game are fluid, nothing to complain about. Music and sound design are second to none, composed by the fantastic musician Mick Gordon, the ostinato in Rip and Tear, BFG Division etc. will stay in your head, I am actually impressed by the strong themes he managed to compose. Loading times on HDD were slow but that is normal concidering the size of the textures etc, so I strongly recommend a fast SSD. Lenght of the campain was more than enough for me, even with the fast pace of the game. For 4€, absolute must buy. And Nintendo thinks Mario Kart World is worth 80 dollars, LMAO. And here you get this for 3,69€, DRM free, forever for you, in your library. Yeah. Thanks, and RIP AND TEAR, UNTIL IT IS DONE!
