The controls on PC should be a crime

It is truly a remarkable feat what Quanitic Dream have achieved. They've built upon the past 45 years of home computer gaming and crafted a control scheme that is somehow worse than any that has come before it. They've made errors that go beyond fundamental, these are entirely new mistakes that have so far never been discovered. The word "counterintuitive" fails here; as the physicist Wolfgang Pauli once remarked with sadness when shown the work of an aspiring student, the controls for this game are "not even wrong." Pressing left to go right? That's mere child's play. In Beyond Two Souls, you can begin a movement sequence and enjoy the entirely novel experience of watching the camera angle swing around specifically to generate the exact wrong input. You can relish the thrill of an on-screen direction prompt appearing at precisely the moment required to confirm what you just did, then scold you for doing it the wrong way as your character runs face-first into an obvious obstacle. That then becomes an elegant metaphor for the rest of your experience with the game, that is, slamming your head repeatedly into insurmountable problems that vanish into nonexistence as soon as they arise until you begin to question whether or not you even have hands. After being delighted by Detroit: Become Human, and from there in Heavy Rain adjusting to the quirky yet creative and immersive control schema that typifies Quantic's output, I was excited to try Beyond Two Souls, which I've heard so many good things about. Perhaps I need to experience it on a console, or simply buy a controller, so I can see for myself why this game is so widely praised. But the keyboard and mouse controls, which I vastly prefer, should carry a minimum sentence of ten years hard labor in a state penitentiary.

Decent game, clunky controls!

Very, very very, clunky controls - even with a gamepad. I often got frustrated cause you can't look around freely (most of the time), and you get stuck on things, and you get lost in tight spaces when the camera changes angle all of a sudden. Game is very much on rails, not much freedom. At one place you might use one of your abilities, but two minutes later when you want to do the same thing, then you can't cause the game decided otherwise. Anyway, some parts are really great, while others are extremely boring and tedious. I mostly liked the slow drama, and didn't like the loooong action-missions, where you "press A to go to cover" time and time again...

Glad to have it DRM free

This must be one of my all time favorite games. It made a large impact on me when I was finally able to play through it after its PC release, having been waiting for it since I watched a gameplay series of the game on youtube. I wished I could have bought it DRM free at the time. Its GOG release struck me by much the same surprise as its PC release. The game will not be for everyone. It is very much cinematic heavy, and some will even call the graphics outdated. At this time I cannot give any more constructive review, other than telling you that if those two things don't scare you away, then play it. I will no doubt be replaying it very soon.

Bad design, failed experiment

Terrible experience -- the worst experience I've had yet with a video game. Almost completely counter-intuitive controls, and you'll spending the vast majority of your time watching a movie, and fighting with the game over controlling the character. And I'm used to playing story-driven games. This video game claims to support free choice and movement, but in reality it runs on rails, with little meaningful interaction. Things that may make sense for you to want to do in a scene, the game will prevent you from doing so, and dictate its own forced storyline and logic. Not once did I find my hand being forced by the game to do something I didn't want to do in order to continue playing. And then it forced character relationships onto me that I showed no interest in, and actively discouraged -- even breaking the illusion that I had any choice in the events unfolding. Nothing can be worth putting yourself through this torture -- not the excellent actors, nor the impressive visual experience and decent soundtrack, nor the plot-hole-filled, mediocre story. All-in-all, this video game is a failed experiment. The funny thing is, that if you take one element from this game, like the horse-riding segment, and expand that into a full game, you'll have a much better game than what this game is trying to do. But the aim of this game is not for it to be enjoyable, is it? It's a complete design fail from me. Only recommended if you're curious to see a high-budget, failed video game experiment in storytelling. It's a very good example in what NOT to do with video game design.

Such a masterpiece on GOG OMG

I can't believe this game landed on Gog. This game is fantastic, one of a kind. Quantic Dream are a fantastic studio. The story is really cool. I don't want to spoil it, it's better to just experience it yourself. Having real actors makes the game even better. Ellen/Elliot Page and Willem Dafoe did a fantastic job. Their performances are incredible. Game feels like a movie and the dialogues are awesome. The game has different endings (a lot of them, can't remember how many) but it is so worth it to replay the game to see all the outcomes.
