Plain and simple, the draw card for me is the story. The graphics of this game are quite good for a TPS. However, the third person camera is not the point of view I would prefer for a whole game. A little first person, or swappable camera modes would go a long way to making this a lot better. The base / tower grinding is also a bit of a pain. I haven't got through the campaign completely, but building a defensible base is the key to early game. SPOILER: It's easy but time consuming to fence off a whole map once you have a primary base and a couple secondary resource collection stations running. Once that's done, a few enemies spawning randomly on the field are easy to take care of.

Made by the same bloke that made Total Annihilation, Supreme Commander is a follow-on in spirit to the original classic. If you like RTS, SupCom Forged Alliance is one of the best of the old guard. (Take it from me - SupCom 2 was a flop in comparison.) The graphics are amazing for the release era. This is truly a 3D game masquerading as 2D due to camera angles. Whoever came up with the morphing / unpacking / upgrading unit animations was a genius. The only disappointment is lack of campaign for the fourth faction, but hey. The (distinctly evil) villains rarely get a campaign - it would set a bad precedent and might give people ideas. At least it's playable in multiplayer. The mod scene - I don't know. There are mods. I don't really need them to enjoy the game.

I bought this game when it was still a steam-only experience. As far as RTS games go, it's in a similar league to Supreme Commander and Total Annihilation. Just translate them to space opera. However, Stardock never really seemed to get off their collective asses and fix a crippling bug - the dreaded memory leak. It was quite frustrating, but the actual game was quite good.

Yes yes, I know we all claim awesomeness on a stick about the things we love and then exaggerate and claim it's an understatement. I beg to differ in this case - this game is awesomeness on many sticks, and I've played a few over the years! Rock Fish Studios have taken the Unreal 4 Engine to an amazing polish in this game, and it's still in development!!! The the explosions look like real ones - the details are amazing! There are very minimal load times between systems, fast paced action and there's even VR support! (I haven't tried this yet, I don't own a VR headset.) The crafting system is very well integrated - but neither do you have to use it if you don't want to. No scanning probes? Go hunt for that stuff by yourself, but watch the time! Those interceptors don't wait for no container! This game is not for those who easily get motion sick, it has full aerial freedom. Pitch, yaw and roll along with the cardinal movements (U, D, L, R, F, B) are all there - if you can handle using them all, take one U R AWESOME ticket and join my club - most of my family can't. I can for some reason? Point aside, Rockfish Studios as the designer gets many U R AWESOME tickets! I have managed to complete the original release after about 40 runs without all the upgrades - but neither have I taken down a colonial warship yet. I wonder how many ARC-9000's it takes?
