I always wanted to live in the 40k universe for a little while, and I always loved the Rogue Trader stuff from that universe. This game does both, and adds in a bunch more stuff too! The only negatives are the somewhat overcomplicated, messy character systems, and the lack of narration alongside the voice acting. But I still give it 5 stars instead of 4 because the game deserves it.
First of all, it's a decent game, generally worth buying. It has problems, mostly stemming from inexperienced direction, such as a bland prologue environment, confused item categorization and enemy design, and a few other things that an experienced dev would know how to fix. (Camera control is unpolished as well) But! what keeps me playing is the characters, and their dialogue. Whoever made them, and wrote their lines, knew what they were about. The core cast basically carries the game.
Have it on the ps4. Has great gameplay, mysterious locations and story elements, and good direction and pacing. Right up until the last act, you will be scrapping for supplies, changing up your style to conserve resources, and dying. I had a fantastic time. The DLC...less so. It was good, don't get me wrong but...there was no finale or payoff at the end, just a "good job" and a splash screen. Annoying, after so many interesting elements and events.
Ignore any "horror" descriptors. There are a few scary moments, but for the most part, this game is about two characters you can love, and their journey through an important moment of growth and change in their lives. The "twist" really does become obvious long before it is revealed, but...that's not the important part. And perhaps isn't really the surprise at all. Very much worth the price, and I hope the sequel comes out soon.
I don't understand why this game didn't sell well. It was fun, interesting, scary, interesting again, and finally, very satisfying when my build all came together. The graphics, the story, the world, gameplay...it all hangs together nicely. Easily one of my favs.
