Was based on the pen & paper systems of old, Steve Jackons GURPS came up with a system for computers and this is was what Interplay came up with, wasn't a bad pecentile turn based system that you gain perks every few levels, you had your disadvantages & advantages much like G.U.R.P.S chararcters in pen & paper systems. The second game was the better game it had better chararcters, more places to go and didn't start off with a time limited quest like the first to get the water chip. If your bad at this game you can always go to Reno and become a fluffer for one of the mafia mobs running harcore films industry there..
I can recall the first days of network gaming and this sums up most of my early memories of Battlenet or local area networking with friends to run ththrough a game to kill Diablo. Collecting player ears like you were a universal soldier in hell in multiplayer i can remember everyone started using raymonds trainer adding in things like godly plate of the whale while duping items by throwing potions around in town. Fun times that will never again return but the memories are sweet so the game gets 5 stars. Was the first real online game before MMO's became MMO's.
Gets one star because gog is trying to sell this for $40 when its a free download if you own the old edition on Steam, like who doesn't own the original of this game to get the anniversary pack. I also give it one star because the old game is better with mods then whats been added in this gimmick with hardcore mode.
I remember finishing this game on the old Sega Gensis back in the early 90's. Th is reminds me of the time i used to work for a small games shop that sold console's & games for Nidendo & Sega, this was one of my favorite plaform games as it was much like the old Commodre 64 game Impossible Mission. Flashback has some good storyline for an old platform game, my favortie stage of this game was the game show.
This was one of my all time favorite games when it was released but i had trouble when it came too emulating it, i could never slow the game down enough to run on newer fast systems but GOG have found the old speed balance and made the game playable again. With this version you don't have to swap CD's like the old game because back in the day it was several disc's because the scanline movie scenes were large files back then as this was an early 90's game. The game play is the foundation of many games of it's type and was the first really good space sim for it's time, the combination of movie scene's for storyline along with open environment where your free to travel, trade & fight aswell as do story missions that progressed the story plot. In a sense it's basically an early X2,3,4 without the owning space stations, in this game you trade with planets not just space stations. I liked the story plot for this game and the added movie sequences at the time, for the early 90's this was a cool high end game as i can remember not many people could run it properly due to slower computers. Love the technology like scanlines they used back then to enhance videos because the resoultion was so bad, was common in many games of that era but i still love that because it brings back memories from years ago. Great old game GOG. This one is a real classic for space sim lovers and works prefectly at nice speed on brand new high end machines with windows 10.
I don't think it's as good as the original two games on Sega Gensis, the player just trips and falls over when moved on keyboard. You'll need Xbox to PC conroller rig to get any use out of this because with keyboard it's unplayable the way the controls are. Gave this two stars because it may be good if your using a controler setup, otherwise just play Bloodbowl.
When this first came out there was so much hype that finally a new version of the Ultima had arrived only to have this sorry heap land on the shelf, i can remember being highly disappointed with this game, it had ok graphics for the time but really lacked in gameplay and player controls, was nothing like previous Ultima games even tho this had better graphics the game was just shocking so bad you went right back to the store & asked for a refund! Was wondering if Gog had improved this game with some new content or if it was still the same old pile of garbage it was back when it was released, if it's the same don't buy this game because it's just a waste of time.
I played this game about around 1995 finished the game, was one of the better D&D games using the 2nd edition rules, You had the telekinetic classes with some cool races to build your party with, Turn based battle's were cool for it's day. It's a bit old these days, was a fairly open world game where you travel town to town doing quests & such. The last battle is interesting but nothing new in gaming. Great old game but can't say it's worth it's full asking price on GOG, best wait for a sale if you're keen on this game, graphics and gameplay are way too dated to really warrant another purchase.
Based on a pen and paper system similar to the D&D games of the era but has way more depth and character development. The amount of detail they have put into such an old game from its cool sounding MIDI files and turn based tactical combat its gaming that you just dont get these days.. Character creation is so indepth it takes hours to assemble the party you want.. Random rolling stats for classes like demonologist, pyromancers, wizards rangers to Jesters, the game has such an array of classes. I would advise theving in this game as its so profitable:) just make sure you save before you pickpocket merchants or they wont deal with you again if you are caught stealing. The detail lies in the finer points of the game where you need the right equipment to climb a mountian or traverse a swamp or you may fall ill to one of the many dangrous diease's like Numb Skull the game punishes you with. Its a hard game but very rewarding once you get stuck in.
What can i say that hasn't already been said about the greatest of all Roleplaying games.. I will say this.. Thankyou GOG for fixing the speed issue now i can play this game with out the cpu speed killing my character due to starvation. This is gaming at its best! i dare say this Ultima 7 Blackgate is one of the first true open worlds which few match today.. Better brush up on the old runic language again and dust off you'r old maps because there's so much to see and do in this old 28 MB game.,
